I recently auditioned a pair of Linn AV 5140 speakers. I wondered
what anyone else's reaction to the AV 5140 speaker system is. I was
absolutely blown away by the way it sounded, the imaging, musicality,
etc. I listened to both CD's and LP's on it for almost 2 hours and am
very close to buying the pair in the next couple days. I auditioned them

a couple 800 series B&W and the Keildh (which also was very impressive
to me). I am considering doing an in-home audition of these speakers
before purchase to see if I have any last minute reservations. I have
never owned any linn equipment before and wondered what peoples general
opinion of their wares is and if anyone else had heard these speakers
and had any thoughts. These unit's
were around $2300.00 a pair, are there other speakers in this price
range that I should listen to. I listened to the 800 series B&W's (Which
was what I initially set out to buy) at the same time as the Linn's and
thought the both the Keildh and the AV5140's blew them away.I have never
heard anything about linn except for their phonographs which are
supposed to be very nice. Is the build quality and reliability good, I
don't play my system that loud nor do I think I am very rough on
speakers, I have never blown a driver before, but do want to know if
these hold up well and can occasionally be cranked.
Thanks
Bill

I have had a pair of 5140's for a few years now and I haven't heard anything
that I would want to replace them with, I have them tri amped with Linn
equipment. I'm totally sold on the Linn equipment.

These are very well built, reliability/ruggedness is excellent, and
*should* there ever be a problem Linn has a superb record for
customer/product support. People are passionate about their favorite
audio components so you may get numerous recommendations of speakers
to listen to, but you've already compared (and prefer) the Linns to
some other high-quality speakers in the price range. This is
definitely a situation where you can trust your ears, and if your
ears continue to love the Linns you can rest assured that you've made
a quality purchase. (BTW, the AV 5140's are a bit of a departure from
the sound of some previous Linn speakers, and I think some folks who
didn't care for previous Linns find the 5140's to be quite nice.)

Good listening!

Do you have them tri-amped passively or are you using the active
crossovers that fit in the Linn amps. I would be curious to know what
you think of the active (or should I say Aktiv) setup. If I buy these
speakers I will be strongly considering going Linn on the electronics
because of that upgrade path. What differences did you notice that you
would not have with just using 3 times the power??

Bill,If you like the speakers, I really wouldn't worry what anyone
else thought about them. The only person that will know if you will
be happy with them in the long run is you. I think you will know if
these are the speakers for you after you listen to them in your own
home on a trial basis.

The only drawback to owning Linn equipment that I'm aware of is that
you might turn into a "Linnie". Linnes are sort of like the Hara
Krishnas of old who hung around the airports and tried to persuade
you to shave your head and sell incense with them, or at least buy
their expensive books. Once you have become a Linnie, you will have
to learn to hold your nose up and sniff at any other equipment that
was not built by Linn. There are probably other cult rituals and
chants you will have to learn also, but since I have never been a
Linnie, I am not privy to these.

Take care.

I have heard the 5140's and yes, I feel that they are quite good. One
point of caution is that at last check--they are not able to driven in
active (aktiv) mode. They just do not have that capabiltiy. Is that
really important for you?

The 5140's are wonderful and have been very popular. 5140's are not
activ at this time, but they are working on it.. With going activ you
put the power to the speaker rather than to the crossover. The
crossover in the amp does take away all that power that the passive
crossover in the speaker does. Adding amps is adding quality rather
than more power. If you start with 1 bad watts why would you want 100
more? Linn's most expensive amp, the Klout, is 80 watts per channel.
In an activ system that's like 600 watts. I am a Linn dealer, but
thought Linn was the best before that. Service and engineering are
better than any company I've heard of. They're engineered to not need
service except to upgrade when something new comes out. They often
service their products for free beyond the warranty period. With Linn
you not only buy great equipment but a great company that stands
firmly behind it.

<sob> I confess I am a linnie, a fully paid up member of the K Klutz
Klan or what my SO would call a KLinnik Kase, a kookie K kollektor or
Klectomaniak. I have 8K's in my system. There is no Known Kure but the
symptoms are treated with k's of kash and kool kuts.

After some extensive auditioning, I recently bought a used pair of Keilidhs and
am enjoing them immensely. Linn hardware strengths: Build quality, cabinetry,
engineered to upgrade instead of obsolesence.I find the speakers enjoyable to
listen to for extended periods. The Keilidhs benefit from sounding great using
real-world speaker placements (i.e. close to rear wall). Again, trust your own
ears with the music you enjoy listening to.

What did you like about the Keilidhs that led you to buy them instead of the
AV5140's?
