Recently bought some speakers, Acoustic Image Phase IV which appear
to have been manufactured in the US. I'm not a speaker expert and
need to know what they're worth. Paid $600 Australian for them (So
that's probably about $300US or 200 pounds). The pair of speakers
have the following specs:
150 Watts RMS
Frequency Range 40hz -> 21khz
Bass Drivers 2*210mm poly cones
High Range 25mm soft dome tweeter
Twin sets of banana style inputs, looks
like separate amps can be used for low
and high end?
...
Anyone heard of this brand? I was told they're worth ~$1700
Australian and think I've either done ok or been ripped off! Would
love to hear from anyone familiar with this brand of speaker, from my
searching they don't seem very well known...
Cheers

Acoustic Image Phase IV is yet another variation of the name
used by a group in Illinois/Missouri known as "Sophie" (and
others" to sell a range of VERY low-end speakers under somewhat
different pretenses. Other names include "Acoustic Response dB
IV," "Acoustic Monitor dbIV," "Acoustic Phase," "Dynamic Audio
Pro-Poly 1901," "Acoustic Reference," "Audio Reference," and a
host of other variants that sound vaguely like some real
companies.
They use minimal parts count, minimal parts quality, no design
to speak of, and their sole purpose is to be sold by "dealers"
who are nothing more than free-lance roving people who sell them
to people in parking lots. In this country, these dealers were
often seen driving white Ford Econoline vans, thus the term
"white-van speakers."
The sales pitches these people use are varied, but center around
a central theme:
1. A dealer was overshipped, and we have to get rid of the extra
quickly
2. These were supposed to go to a studio for professional
monitoring use but (pick one) (1) the studio went under,
(2) the gig fell through, (3) they didn't fit, etc.
3. I lost my job and I have to sell them.
4. They're hot!
The speakers are NOT worth $1700 of anybody's dollar, and in
this country, the company making them was specifically sued by
the Illinois State Attorney General and the Federal Trade
Commission for specifically making such claims. These speakers
are NOT available through ANY other channel then the one you
bought them through, and thus are worth, to them, whatever they
can get for them. Since there is no retail outlet, there can be
no retail price and thus the claim of retail worth is false and
misleading.
Thus, in one sense, you were, indeed, ripped off. You were led
to believe that they were worth $1700 when, in fact, you'd never
find them for that price. You were led to believe, I suspect,
that they are something other than what they are. They ARE
cheaplyu made speakers designed solely to be sold in the manner
in which you acquired them for whatever price they can get for
them.
In another sense, do you like them? That's the ultimate criteria
of what they are worth.
