Hi

I recently bought a turntable equipped with a Stax condenser cartridge.
There's a Phono equalizer (Stax ECP1)with this cartridge. The phono
Equalizer is connected in the aux of the preamp. There's something
really special about this phono stage. It has NI CAD batterys inside it
so you can charge them as needed.

I know what's a moving magnet or moving coil cartridge but a condenser
cartridge is something new for me.

Is someone know something about this setup ? is it good sounding ? Is
the phono stage can be utilized with other cartridges ?

Any informations are welcome

Thanks

Yes. Despite a slight noise and a somewhat limited bandwith, the Stax
CP-Y electret cart is really nice sounding.

No, it is dedicated to the cart.

Dear Mr Légaré! The Stax cartridge was a remarkable unit but just a few
peoples had the chance to heard it. I'm not one of those (sorry). Why it
could not sound good? The moving mass of this pickup system is probably the
lightest of all because the cantilever dont have to move the coils or heavy
magnets. It would provide fastest highs. Micro-acoustic (USA) is another
old cartridge company closed around 1985 that made condenser cartridges. It
was probably the most performing unit ever made for tracking and near
perfect square wave response. What about the sound of these legendary
performers??? I have big doubts... You know, the sound personality of any
audio component is known by hearing to it. The more serious it is made the
better it sound if engineers design it to be a musical instrument not a
technical feat. The design principles is in this respect almost out of
consideration. Please hear to the Stax cartridge and judge yourself if it
was so good.

The principle of the electrostatic cartridge is the same of that of
Condenser microphone. you can go on http://members.xoom.com/rlaudio to
learn more about condenser pickup principles.

If you have more questions feel free to ask! But if you agree i'l be more
confortable if i can use french to reply (excuse me for the bad english)

Richard LeBlond.
