The Kravitz family were Abner and Gladys. I have spoken elsewhere (in an article by Marsha Woodbury on ethnic seterotypes in the media) of the
stereotyping of Jews in situation comedies such as Bewitched. Gladys Kravitz
represented "Jewish paranoia", although we the audience knew her observations
were correct, Samantha (the sterotypical perfect gentile woman, blonde, beautiful, self-effacing to the point of relinquishing her supernatural powrs in the service of her husband's ego) condescends to confrontations by Gladys. Of course
consistent with the sterotype, Abner is old and Gladys is singularly unattractive. Just had to put that in Paul lest we think Bewitched wa a totally harmless
entertaining bit of fluff. Have fun, Bonnie Chakravorty (keeper of the Jewish
celebrity trivia list).>>

Yes, Maurice was Sam's father (played by Maurice Evans) and I think he was
still married to Endora, even though they didn't live together.

Gladys Kravitz husband was Abner. Samantha also had a few aunts that appeared
once or twice - Enchantra, Hagatha and Hepziba (who was also the queen of the
witches before Samantha). Also, don't forger about Darrin's parents - Frank
and Mrs. Stephens (can't remember her first name).

Great show!!

If I may respectfully disagree with the assertions above, I'd like to say
that I never assumed that the Krazitves were supposed to be Jewish. I just
figured that Gladys was generally paranoid. Abner was perhaps a stereo-
typically henpecked husband.

We could condemn virtually every sitcom for unfortunate stereotypes. In
fact, today we have abysmal offerings like "Weird Science" which cater
to male pubescent fantasies by suggesting that women can be "created" by
them.

Although Samantha appears to acquiesce to Darrin's whims, she does in fact
frequently ignore his wishes and use her power anyway. As do her many
relatives, who are overwhelmingly female. Bear in mind that the show
premiered in 1964, thirty years ago. This was heady stuff for the time...
actually it can be viewed as an early acknowledgment of female empower-
ment, and the humor in much of it is the evident fear that "female
power" brings to some males.

>>Well, I remember Aunt Clara, Larry's wife (Louise, I believe),

Aunt Clara was played by Marion Lorne, a role surpassed in brilliant
acting on the show only by that of Agnes Moorhead as Endora.

Tabatha, I am told, is the correct original spelling in the black-and-
white eps; later changed to "Tabitha" for the color shows.

I believe the correct spelling is Serena, Samantha's twin "cousin" also
played by Elizabeth Montgomery.

Gladys' husband was Abner.

A most excellent actor, perfectly matched with Agnes Moorehead (Endora).

Mabel Albertson (Mrs. Stephens) also pops up frequently on other sitcoms
of the era.

They were Jewish?? Could have fooled me I just thought they were
possibly of Polish or eastern European descent. After all, they did take
in an orphan for Christmas in one episode which I just saw. Seems hard
to believe that they were a stereoptype when they weren't even that
type! Here's to not reading so much into harmless sitcoms.

I had also figured on East European...which is why the post you reference
was a big surprise to me, too. I heartily concur that this is an erroneous
reading of the show. Let's enjoy them, realizing also that they are very
much a product of their time and that they aren't going to reflect '90s
values.

Oops-- I saw on another post that it was Phyllis. Mabel Albertson also
played Howard Sprague's overprotective mother on The Andy Griffith Show.

It's possible they were, but the show is not clear about it. I don't
believe there's ethnic stereotyping where ethnicity isn't obvious.

Doubt it, but don't quote me :-)

Another good idea is to buy the Prime Time Network TV reference book. You
can find it in all book stores. I bought it last year, and it has been a
tremendous use. It lists character/actor names (and the years they played
if not the full run of the show) and air night, time and network. Also a
brief plot summary is included and there are some handy cross reference
tables in the back. Good stuff! It covers all *network* TV shows from
the beginning of network TV to present day.
