Have television executives forgotten about family-values and decency?

http://www.onenewsnow.com/Culture/Default.aspx?id=1590144

A media critic says he's disappointed with ABC for lowering its
standards regarding family-friendly programming.

Movieguide's publisher, Dr. Ted Baehr, finds it sad to see how the
network has slumped to doing shows like "Don't Trust the B____ in
Apartment 23" and "Good Christian Belles" (GCB). These prime-time
programs on ABC have been criticized by pro-family groups as
anti-Christian and promiscuous.

"So, we have been writing ABC, writing Robert Iger, the head of ABC (and
president and CEO of Disney) … saying look -- you have a commitment in
Disney to be family-friendly," Baehr asserts. "How in anybody's
estimation is ['Don't trust] the B' next door or 'Good Christian Bs'
family-friendly? It's not family-friendly at all."

He does, however see good news regarding these controversial shows.

"A lot of sponsors have dropped out. Unfortunately, they're still
sponsors like AT&T that have hung in there," the Movieguide publisher
notes. "And AT&T needs the family audience, or it's going to go down.
So, there are still people hanging in there, and you need to write your
sponsors."

Meanwhile, with the resignation of Disney's Rich Ross, the first
alternative lifestyle president of a major studio, Baehr is hoping for a
"breath of fresh air" at ABC's parent company.

"It was a disastrous three years," he concludes.

If they want to watch Disney shows, put the Disney channel on. ABC is
not the Disney channel.

LOL. AT&T is going to go down because it advertises during these shows.

Nope. They're just appealing to the vast majority of us who prefer that
our TV viewing isn't dumbed down to only that which is appropriate for a
5-year-old.

I wouldn't let my 5 year old (if I had one still) watch the crap that passes for tv on ABC. She used to watch CBS with me (and TCM, she loves old movies).

I know. It's sort of like how "they" decided if a nude portrait is on (even an "upper cable" channe [though not the premiums yet]), they digitize out anything that might be "offensive". The Birth of Venus, on the History Channel I believe, was the kicker for me (that or the art nouveau 'nude' in a Poirot episode). Hell, they even digitize BBC-America, 'cause you might see a naked butt.

I just really dislike ABC. They used to have shows that I watched and enjoyed, then they started showing 5 episodes and cancelling the rest of the series. Can't remember the last one that they burned me on, but they never got me back (even *if* hubby watches OUaT, it's the only one). Even he is beginning to lose interest. Soon enough, ABC will no longer 'grace' our tv set (and it's nothing to do with supposed 'values').

Radio has been editing songs for years and years (remember the radio cut of The Devil Went Down to Georgia? The Devil was a son of gun in that one.). There are songs performed by the 'stars' that are called "radio-edit". Generally, if I like a song, I'll find it on Rhapsody or I-tunes, and see if they have a "non" radio-edit (or radio cut, depending on where the band is from).

Used to be that if a show was on the "old masters" of painting, that their works were not for titillation factors (lord knows I've never seen any of my brothers spending much time admiring artworks). Ever since "boobgate", things have swung so far to side, that masterpieces are butchered (not to say that the above mentioned song is *not* a masterpiece....).

TV is corrupting our youth, but that's only because our youth is
choosing to watch corrupt programming and the adults are to blame
because they are too busy worrying about the economy and so the kids
become latch-key kids and then they get into other trouble like
hanging out with the wrong crowd who might be doing drugs or getting
drunk or experimenting with sex (or maybe all three which is a whole
lot more exciting especially when its an orgy like the neighbors cats
have every weekend and I know its cats fucking because I watched them
many times so dont tell me its cats fighting because thats a lot of
loving going on) and then they start vandalizing houses and digging in
garbage and stealing cars and throwing rotten eggs and recycled toilet
paper at the old folks homes which is a risky proposition because the
old guys sometimes chase after them with shot guns or mashetty's and
then the police have to get invovled but then the kids get smarter and
form gangs and then they start fighting with the police and then the
whole street can turn into a big blood bath, but I've digressed and
should probably stop, but should I really? Yes. Bye.

Apparently it's truth-in-advertising. The label says "Rambling

While I can agree with the sentiment, we're talking about the
_public_ airwaves here, thus programing must more or less
conform to what's acceptable to the general public.

Ha ha! I especially liked the part about the cats, but I can't help but
notice a subtle parallel between the vivid imagery of violently hostile
old people armed by machetes chasing after the young vandals v. atheists
poking fun at religious right-wing-nut proselytizers here in this
"alt.atheism" newsgroup -- it's as if the elderly represent atheism
while the young vandals represent religion.

The literary style is certainly abusive to the reader, but in a manner
that strikes out as if the reader has been asking for it. Although I'm
not naturally inclined to masochism, I too look forward to reading more
from this brilliant contributor.

"General" is pretty general. Censors want to be specific. They want to
eliminate everything not "suitable" for a small segment,l so none of us
are allowed to see anything "unsuitable" for children under 12. So the
basic deate is: Do we control at the source or at the spigot?
