Fox renews 'Simpsons;' set to surpass 'Gunsmoke' as longest-running
primetime TV series
by James Hibberd
Longest. TV show. Ever.
Fox has ordered two more seasons of "The Simpsons" that will make the
animated hit the longest-running series in primetime TV history.
The 44-episode pickup will bring the show to a whopping 493 episodes.
"Gunsmoke" has held the record as the longest-running series and was
on the air for 20 years (airing on CBS from 1955 to 1975 with 635
episodes). "The Simpsons" and NBC's "Law & Order" have been closing in
on the Western classic, with Fox's comedy tying "Gunsmoke" this year
and "Order" currently airing its 19th season.
With this renewal, "The Simpsons" (which debuted in 1990) will easily
take the lead. And with NBC shedding its 10 p.m. hour and the "L&O"
flagship pulling modest numbers, the chances of the crime drama
outlasting "The Simpsons" seems unlikely.
"The Simpsons" launched in 1990. Twelve years ago, the show surpassed
"The Flintstones" as the longest-running animated series. Outside of
ultra-competitive primetime, other programs have been on the air
considerably longer. NBC's "Meet the Press" has been around since
1947. CBS' soap "Guiding Light" has been airing since 1952 and NBC's
"The Tonight Show" has been in production since 1954.
Sorry, it my book, animated shows don't count.
"Gunsmoke" is still the winner (with L&O coming up fast) AFAIAC. "The
Simpsons" only rate a footnote.
Duh....
Oh sure. On the one hand you have a show set entirely on a studio
backlot that reused every standard Western plot and probably a few
scripts from earlier seasons. On the other hand you have an animated
show densely packed with jokes, crafted by hundreds of people on two
different continents over several months.
I'd say what "The Simpsons" has done is more impressive than anything
ever accomplished in television, and they've managed to fill out every
one of FOX's orders for 20 years (by comparison, "Family Guy" has yet
to complete a standard 22-episode order).
On the plus side for The Simpsons is the fact that the show existed for
several seasons prior to that as clips within the Tracy Ulman show.
On the minus side for The Simpsons is the fact that it will still need
another 5 or 6 years of renewal (beyond the two year renewal it just got)
before its episode count matches that of Gunsmoke.
...and if anything is worthy of only a 'footnote' rating in this discussion
it would be Law&Order.
I think there is a valid point, in that Gunsmoke faced the additional
challenge of retaining a live cast. As Law & Order has shown, it's easy to
go wrong. Yes, sure, James Arness and Amanda Blake made it the whole way,
but that's part of the equation.
But no slight intended to The Simpsons -- it has stayed unbelievably fresh,
funny, and high energy. I couldn't believe that they were still rocking it
after 10.
I don't want to diminish "Gunsmoke" but I'm wondering, when they're
doing 39 episodes a season and there's little to no money being made
on backend how much worry is there about quality and how often do they
just say "okay, let's do another "High Noon" episode."

Your book isn't fit for public consumption.

Given that The Simpsons' impact on pop culture has been at least as
big as that of Gunsmoke or even bigger -- both in absolute terms and
relative to each show's era of existence -- I think your assessment is
objectively idiotic.

I'm greatly amused that they're currently pretending that the show
won't be renewed either up to or past its 500th episode.

I guess in those days there was no reason for them to leave. An
established TV actor wasn't going to become a movie star.
And highly unlikely that any station will buy a package of the entire
series.....this one will prolly be split into stuff like "The Simpsons: The
Early Years" or "Simpons Saga: The Later Years"
don't forget "Gunsmoke" existed as a radio series for a few years before the
TV version debuted.
actually no.....Amanda Blake left after the 19th season,

Come on, how awesome would it be if FOX cancelled the show after only
499 episodes? It would be totally fitting. Also, hasn't 60 Minutes
been on the air longer than both Gunsmoke and The Simpsons? There's
no reason to pit all these long-running shows against one another.
Gunsmoke is the longest-running scripted, hour-long prime time show of
all time, The Simpsons is the longest-running scripted, half-hour
animated show of all time. Both incredible accomplishments.
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
I rate your post a 0 out of 10.

Well, "60 Minutes" is an *unscripted* show.
Ian (Or so they claim. Personally, I'm pretty sure a fair number of
their (real) scripts come straight from the DNC... :p )

Your response sounds like you have been drinking the RNC Kool-aid. :p

I thought we told you not to go to WQ's 'school'.

Let me guess...you stopped watching it 5 years ago, right?

These aren't posted via Google Groups.
I'm trying to stay away from GG until they fix the Screenname issue.
Amanda didn't make it the whole way.

How about "The Actually Good Klasky Csupo Years" and "The Other Crap"?

Nobody this side of Marvel Comics could be *that* stupid.
Just replying so that David can see the response.
If I were you, David, I'd be worried. It seems that Ian has found a way to
plot against you behind your back.
I'm not worried. It very likely involves TNBC somehow.

I'm not seeing posts from this particular screenname. Is it possible
motzarella thinks it's spam because it says spam?
I can see his posts through motzarella, though I have a similar problem with
a poster in another group that doesn't show up on motzarella or google...and
yet other people can see his posts.
All in all, you should probably look at it as a blessing, though it will be
harder to keep up with all the Disney and ABC Family shows without Ian's
reports.

Dude, we're talking about FOX. Of *course* they're *that* stupid.
Still, I don't think that FOX would cancel the show at 493 episodes.
And even if they did, I suspect that Fox Studio would probably
commission the 7 more episodes to round up the number just because,
well, the Simpsons is a gajillion-dollar franchise and thus, there'd
be no real economic downside to commissioning 7 more episodes and
thus, using episode 500 to be able to send the show off with a
humongously-promotable Event.

And that doesn't make it good.
If you think this is a good thing, just think of what other shows the money
could be spent on instead.

Probably spent on development of more reality shows.

That's pretty much correct.

... Which they would then schedule at a never-before-used
timeslot after whatever Josh Whedon/The X-Files Guy show they've got
four episodes of to not show before cancelling.

What ever happened to that guy on Rawhide, anyway?

He had to go through Italy to get anywhere in Hollywood.
I was gonna' go with "Wanted: Dead or Alive" -- which I actually liked
better as a kid -- but Rowdy Yates will do.
