Again I am not getting WDYW threads, I think due to a heap
of other unread posts which are delaying them.

So catching up on what I watched:

So, on Thu Jun 6, I watched:

GAME OF THRONES: The Rains of Castamere
Posts exist elsewhere, but I wasn't impressed like others
were

REVOLUTION: The Dark Tower
Again, posts exist elsewhere

WAREHOUSE 13: Instinct
"H.G. has created a new life for herself in Wisconsin, but
calls in the agents when she comes up against an
unidentified artifact. Meanwhile, Abigail joins the others
on the floor of the warehouse to track down the source of
mysterious tremors that threaten to destroy the building."

Jaime Murray was a redeeming feature, otherwise this
episode did not impress also.

THE GLADES: Shot Girls
Well the female scenery is nice at least.

LONGMIRE: Carcasses
Ends with the appearance of "The Chin", which possibly
pleases some, but indifferent afaiac.

On Fri Jun 7, I watched a heap of PRIMEVAL NEW WORLD
episodes, whilst doing something else.
Amanda Tapping directed one of the episodes, and Colin
Ferguson (Eureka) appeared in another episode.

Saturday I watched the rest of the show.

This morning, Sun Jun 9 here, I watched:

DEATH IN PARADISE
No episode titles seem to exist for this show.

ANGER MANAGEMENT: Charlie & His New Therapist
I like the humour.
This & Nurse Jackie are the only half hour shows I watch
at present.

Which reminds me that the series will premiere in the USA on Syfy in about
15 minutes (10pm Eastern).

I left the TV on the HOT IN CLEVELAND marathon all day. I'd never seen
this before, but I like all 4 lead actresses, and it's got all kinds of
fun guest stars. It's not brilliant, but it's enjoyable, and very not
politically correct which is refreshing. The current episode has
Heather Locklear, Jay Harrington (Better Off Ted), and Eddie Cibrian.
Pat Harrington and Bonnie Franklin have shown up, as has Mary Tyler
Moore, Ed Asner, Georgette Engel, Laura San Giacomo, Tim Conway, Alan
Dale, Fred Willard, Regis Philbin, Dave Foley, Juliet Mills, Cybil
Shepard, Barry Bostwick ... Fred-Bob sez "Check it out"

On the other hand it's got some truly horrendous commercials. A lot of
"look how mutilated I am from this disease" spots. And my current
contender for STUPIDEST AD ON TELEVISION:

They keep running this "Glad Trash Bag "One Bag" Party" campaign. They
have some nitwit, I assume party planner, telling you how to have a
party that only uses ONE TRASH BAG. Her first tip is, instead of paper
plates, use your old china (yeah, got a lot of that laying around) and
serve finger foods so there won't be any cutlery used, but her (I think)
third tip is to set up an array of trash receptacles, labeled for each
kind of trash, EACH WITH IT'S OWN TRASH BAG. Yes, her big tip to see
that you only use one trash bag is to set up an array of multiple trash
bags to separate all your trash into. Aside from the massive stupidity
on it's face (how does stuff like this make it to air?), how many kinds
of trash can you have when you're using old china and no cutlery? Won't
it *all* be, you know, food, and go in ONE TRASH BAG?

Since you mention it, I guess I might as well record it. I probably
won't watch it since I didn't watch the original but maybe it'll
surprise me.

Sinbad is also premiering tonight. I have lower hopes for that than I
have for Primevil...

Well, I guess that with Newport gone these days, someone had to take of the
reins of show promoter for HOT IN CLEVELAND.

I'm guessing that they were setting up these multiple trachbags to take care
of the drink containers. Glass bottle bag, aluminum can bag, plastic bottle
(and plastic cup) bag, and paper cup bag. Of course, that still equates to
more than one bag. The only way to ensure that you can throw a party where
all the trash fits in one bag is to keep the invite list short.

I watched:

BREAKING BAD: episodes #7 and #8 for the current season (as well as the
'Chicks /n Guns' extra scene on the Netflix disc). Finally, I am all caught
up with Walter White's life.

PRIMEVAL: NEW WORLD: I can see why they put this on Syfy Saturday. It is
right up there with the style/quality of their typical Saturday monster
movies. I don't think I will watch any more of these, even though the show
is only one season long. Compared to this, TERRA NOVA looked like high art.

What did you watch?

Well, you pretty much have to use washable items for service. But of
course all you're doing is shifting your anti green impact.

ZERO DARK THIRTY (BluRay movie) -
Catherine Bigelow is no great shakes as a director, sorry,
Oscar. Even the great Jessica Chastain, and a solid cast overall,
couldn't make up for the overlong, choppy, disjointed, and really
incompetent direction. The "true story" and inherent interest of the
plot really carried it to the point of watchability.
I wasn't crazy about "The Hurt Locker" and although I liked
this, it didn't need any Best Movie nominations. Bigelow is getting
plaudits on affirmative action and politics.

Grade: B

KING KONG (2005 remake, on cable, maybe FX? AMC?)
This movie proves that not only can the greatest classics be
remade with success, but also that a great director can make even the
worst of actors (in this case, Jack Black) turn in a solid
performance.
Really a brilliant redo of one of the great all-time classics.
The ending fell down some, unfortunately, but the retro 30s "want to
make it as a showgirl" beginning, and the numerous brilliant scenes on
Skull Island, really fill out a very long movie. Naomi Watts doing
vaudeville for King Kong - gotta' just love it.

Grade: A-

I watched:

GET A LIFE:
The Complete Series watch continues!
• "The One Where Chris and Larry Switch Lives".
After stealing an Indian arrowhead from a sacred Indian burial ground
behind the mall, Chris is cursed to switch lives with Larry. Hey! It's
Sabrina the teen-aged witch's Aunt, Zelda! In the commentary track,
David Mirkin is joined by Kevin Neiland, who had nothing to do with the
show and just happened to be there, who both pretty much say nothing
about the show and wasted our time, although David mentioned that he
considered getting Kevin on this show but he was too busy with SNL and
the used the old pull-back-the-camera-while-zooming-in to get the "going
crazy" effect when Chris realized what happened. That scene took the
longest to film, a day or two.
• "Psychic 2000".
After choking to death on his cereal at breakfast and reluctantly being
revived by his father, Chris discovers he has visions of the future,
incluing a roller-skating monkey in his living room, his mother dieing
her hair the same color as Bozo (someone she considered a
thinly-disguised Satan), and Larry choking Sharon to death.
In the commentary track, David Mirkin notes that they weren't sure if
the show would be renewed for another season, despite it being the
highest rated comedy show on FOX. He then explained the process by which
they wrote this show -- boring!

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION:
"Cost of Living". Loxwanna shows up and announces she's getting married
to some elderly alien with a stick up his arse and interferes with Worf
parenting Alexander by basically spoiling him rotten. My gawd, I hope
that holodeck program was a futuristic Seasame Street/Barney show and
not baased on a real planet! Meanwhile, some sort of parasite that eats
plastic infects the ship, causing mechanical malfunctions.

CHEATERS:
Not very interesting, but I noticed Clark Gabel's grandson is sportoing
some Bret Butler facial hair now.

KING OF THE HILL:
A bunch of obnoxious bodybuilders take over Hank's garage that is being
used by his friends to work out. Hey! I think it's Randy Savage, Hulk
Hogan, and that other 'rassler from the 1980's!

FAMILY GUY:
The one where Peter makes his house into the country of Petoria.

FAMILY GUY:
The one where Peter replaces Meg's school newspaper article about Mayor
West with one claiming Luke Perry is gay.

THE CLEVELAND SHOW:
"From Bed to Worse". Cleveland Jr and Roberta take a school trip to D.C.
Meanwhile, Rollo interferes with Cleveland's attempts to get more
intimate with Donna while the kids are away.

What did you watch?

So you're a lot more impressed with Bigelow than I am. Basically her
early career consisted of using her husbands crew when he was between
movies. I think the best thing she ever did was Near Dark, and I'm
still thumbs down on the stupid body transfusion end on that one.

I like it, but it's just too damn long. By the time they were doing
trapeze acts with the t-rex I was just bored. I think there's an
absolutely brilliant 2 hour movie hiding in there somewhere.

Now I'm almost scared to watch. I have a feeling I'm not going to make
it past the opening credits.

I watched:

90210 - "A Portrait of the Artist As a Young Call Girl" and "The Empire
State Strikes Back". The first episode focused on Naomi trying to
figure out who Author X is for a book party she was throwing while the
second focused more nonsense with Annie struggling whether or not to
reveal herself as the author and a ridiculous b-plot about the
fraternity of cheaters. The show is worse than I remember. Way worse
than I remember. Thankfully there are only three episodes left.

Falling Skies - More episodes from the second season blu-ray. This time
the commentaries were actually insightful. In particular they revealed
that Karen switched sides and was helping the Overlords of her own free
will and not because of the harness. They even added the Overlords
changed some tactics based on her advice on how to more effectively
psychologically attack the humans.

Watchmen (blu-ray) - Set on an alternate history Earth where costumed
crime fighters exist and Nixon is still President in 1985, a group of
crime fighters reunite to investigate the murder of one of them. This
is an excellent movie that holds up extremely well on multiple viewings.

Upstream Color (Netflix rental) - I know the basic premise is a woman is
kidnapped and hypnotized then she meets a man who suffered the same
experience but I don't know what else was supposed to be happening in
it. I was only paying attention to the first 20 or so minutes before it
became background noise for another 20 or so minutes then even that was
too much so I just fast forwarded through the rest. It was like some
kind of a weird experimental film. If you liked Melancholia or Tree of
Life then this might be the movie for you. Otherwise if you see it
coming run in the other direction as fast as you can.

(Saved for later: In the Flesh, Wizards vs. Aliens, Primeval and Sinbad)

[Note: Posting this to both WDYW threads for this date...]

Yesterday, I watched:

Yu-Gi-Oh (FOX) - Before golf, I was bored enough to put this on - they
were airing an episode from the early 2000s. So are there no more new
episodes of this? And FOX has just started them from the beginning
again?!

golf - The FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis. OK, wow, this hasn't
happened in ages - but when they day started the *Top 3* people on the
leaderboard were people I had never even heard of!! One guy was, like, a
31-year old PGA rookie or something (who had previously been on the
"web.com Tour" - what the Hell is the web.com Tour??!!); another guy was
someone who had never even played college golf! - Who the heck on the
PGA has never played college golf?!!

Continuum (recorded) - "Second Chances", second season premiere.
Meh. Some 'Reset Buttons' were hit here. But, AFAICT, the show's
central problem remains - everything still seems to be predetermined
(despite what was in Cigarette-Smoking Man's note to his younger self),
so I'm not sure what they can do here.
In other news, as Hunter picked up on, Rachel Nichols has had some
(minor) cosmetic work done - her crow's feet around her eyes are gone,
as was her annoying skin-tick from her eye (which wasn't there a few
years ago, so it much have developed just before "Continuum" filmed...).

The Good Mother (Lifetime) - Hey, Meaghan Martin (from ABC Fam's "10
Things I Hate About You") is still alive!! Unfortunately for her, she
only appears in about 10 minutes of this.
In this flick, Camille Cregan (whom I don't think I've ever seen
before) plays a teenaged wastrel who's taken in by the seemingly perfect
mother (Helen Slater) of her very sick best friend (Martin). The latter
soon kicks off, but not before giving a cryptic warning to the wastrel
best-friend (Cregan) to protect her little sister. Sure enough, when the
little sister starts to get sick too, Cregan's character starts to think
that Helen Slater's character is a Munchausen-by-Proxy sicko head-case.
Wackiness ensues.
This was about average for a Lifetime flick, I'd say.

Sam & Cat (NICK) - OK, this was about as bad as I feared. It was nowhere
near "Victorious" good - heck, it wasn't even "iCarly"-level comedy
good. :/
Worse, the only other listed castmember is an extraneous "wiseguy"
10-year old boy, so I was right that this is going to skew much younger
than either "Victorious" or "iCarly".
On the plus side, we finally lay eyes on a member of Cat's family -
we see her "Nona" in this (character actress Maree Cheatham), and she
may be a semi-recurring character, so that's probably good.
On the 'continuity' front (for anyone that's wondering), the dialogue
mentions that Cat is still in "school", but the words "Hollywood Arts"
are never uttered, and it's unclear if "school" as used here still
refers to "High School", or whether Cat has moved on to "college" by
now. Ultimately, I guess this opens up the possibility that some
"Victorious" castmembers may pop up as guest-stars, though I am
absolutely not holding my breath - maybe Matt Bennett might pop up some
time, but I bet we never see any other member of "Victorious" ever

Oh, and no mention is made of Cat's Hollywood/perfomring dreams,

In any case, I've seen enough - it's "one & out" for me with this

Disney Channel really does have it all over NICK these days, when
NICK can't even get *this* spinoff right... :/

Recorded for later: Sinbad, and Primeval: New World.

Yeah, uh, that makes *no* sense to me, that she would "switch sides".

If that's how they're writing this... well, I have less hope for

I agree. When Noah first said it, I thought that's just his opinion but
then they went on to talk about it in some detail and point out specific
scenes. It's certainly not indicated on screen but it's apparently the
intent behind the scenes for her motivation and actions.

From the commentary apparently they have some of the Smallville people
working on the show. With talent like that behind the scenes what could
go wrong? Although they have also mentioned several times that some of
the decisions on the show are based on orders from Spielberg.

She was most enjoyable.

I was really annoyed that they had a CGI NYC, a 5 block area around the
ESB physically built, all the cars and clothes in stock, and they didn't
knock out a few quickie Shadow or Doc Savage movies, or anybody that was
in that area in the era.

I had never watched the whole original movie, until some years back when
it was some anniversary and there was a cleaned up version released, and
itplayed on PBS. It was interesting that so much of what I got about the
film without watching it fully was the New York scenes.

But i watching the whole thing, the New York part is just the finale, most
of the action happens before that. So you could watch the movie and skip
the ending in NY, it's still this great movie.

And yes, I got the recent version on DVD at a garage sale a few years
back, and it really does work out well. It feels like the thirties, and
really, that's needed. The whole notion of an island with a giant ape
(and dinosaurs) was based on that period when there was still parts of the
world to explore. Today, it just doesn't work.

Some of the mystery was because it wasn't all known. I seem to recall
some of the "lost world" stuff came because explorers only caught glimpses
of things, and that lay the foundation for the stories about hidden
dinosaurs.

I remember watching King Solomon's Mine on TV decades ago, the famous
version, and that represented a very "dark" Africa. I thought it was all
about thick jungle, but I gather from more recent reading (of non-fiction)
it's not. They mystery of Africa was about the thick jungles, not the
plains wehre Hatari! was chasing animals That's a good movie, I think you
said you liked it, but even by the time it was made, the imagery of Africa
had changed. It likely had changed by the time of King SOlomon's Mine,
but a couple of decades made a difference..

About the only place left to explore is the deep ocean, and they're
already doing that. None of the mysteries of "Voyage to the Bottom of the
Sea", but all kinds of odd animals and ecology around those heat vents
wayd own, mysterious things they hadnt' expected, even if they aren't the
prehistoric animals that the stories expected.

Primeval: New World is set in Canada, which, as you know, is not even a
real country. They do have a park for the anomalies to appear, so that
*all* of the dinosaurs are not attacking inside of office buildings. And
yes, for some reason, the dino attacks in the park seemed slightly less
laughable than the ones in the city...but only slightly.

I liked the 1976 version. The Jack Black version was not nearly as good,
mostly because it was filled with really bad CGI and dinosaur silliness.
