When would you say that Nick truly went down hill?

The last show that I really enjoyed was The Journey of Allen Strange.
I liked Sci-fi and this one was different. It wasn't the greatest Nick
show but it was still enjoyable.

I remember about the time Catdog premeired was when I started to like
Nick less and less. This was also around the time that Nick tried to
be cool and became MTV jr.

AFAIC, all NICKToons have been terrible, since Day One, except early
"SpongeBob". Maybe "Avatar" was OK too. But the rest are all "No!"'s.

That's why anyone who judges NICK just on their 'toons isn't worth
discussing the subject with...

Wild Thornberrys, Spongebob, and Rugrats were all good. Jimmy Newtron,
Fairly oddparents, and Hey Arnold all had decent episodes as well.

Caveat: I'm a cartoon snob: it's it's not 1940s era Bugs Bunny (or 80s
era "Thundarr" and "Transformers"), what's the point?!!

I was a child of the 70s and a teen of the 80s, raised on stuff like The
Superfriends, Underdog, Rocky & Bullwinkle, Scooby Doo and The Flintstones,
as well as those others.

But I have to say, in my opinion, the best era for cartoons was the early
90s, with stuff like Animaniacs, Tiny Toon Adventures, Eek The Cat and The
Tick. That stuff was brilliant; truly a golden age.

The period between when cartoon only existed to sell toys and the
Power Rangers/Pokemon invasion began (about 1988-1995) was definitely
the high point of TV cartoons.

You had the Spielberg shows ("Tiny Toons," "Animaniacs"), Disney
producing high-quality animation ("Chip 'n Dale," "Duck Tales," "Goof
Troop," "Darkwing Duck"), relatively mature, complex superhero shows
("Batman," "X-Men," "Spider-Man") and good showrunners on Saturday
morning cartoons (Mark Evanier on "Garfield," JMS on "Ghostbusters,"
Steve Holland on "Eek! The Cat").

Tiny Toons is the only one of the above that I could stand watching and it
suffered from the same annoying voices problem as Fairly Oddparents.

Batman, in every form, has always been near the top of all things overrated.
Spiderman is not far behind, though perhaps the film reboot will finally
offer up something decent.

No love for Ren & Stimpy from anyone? (Though I realize it was a very
much a love-it-or-completely-despise-it type of show.) I also used to
enjoy Rocko's Modern Life, though having recently re-watched some
episodes I'm not sure it's held up too well. (And in fairness,
neither has most of R&S.)

No love either for "You Can't Do That on Television", "Pinwheel" or
even foreign cartoons then Nick once broadcasted like Count Duckula,
Danger Mouse, Mysterious Cities of Gold, Belle & Sebastian? ;-)

Is it far-fetched if I compare the decline of Nickelodeon with the
decline of General Motors? Both was once at the top and leaded the
marketshare, both did some cost-cuttings, both did some mistakes who
cost their marketshare....

Damn right it was! I'd even add in The Little Prince, Today's
Special, BananaMan, and What!? The Devil. Pinwheel was Nick's answer to
Sesame Street and the Electric Company combined, as it added in both
live action, puppeterring, animation, and some animatronics.

The Canadian shows (YCDTOTV, Today's Special) were original, and
still get laughs to this day. You won't find YCDTOTV's slapstick humour
anywhere on Nick now. Those were staples, and actually went on well
after Nick dropped them (IIRC, Nick dropped YCDTOTV around '87-'88;
their last show was in 1992).

The British shows (Danger Mouse, Bananaman, What! The Devil,
Count Duckula, and anything else Thames) spoke for themselves. Benny
Hill's production company for kids.

French. My world stopped at 1:30 every afternoon for Belle and
Sebastian. That series was nothing I had ever seen, and made me beg my
parents to get a Great White Pyrenees. Never happened. Dammit. The
Little Prince made me imagine, let alone want to learn French, and that
was saying a LOT for being 9 years old when it was on.

Mysterious Cities of Gold (and to an extent, Spartacus) were
okay.. MCoG was better, while Spartacus was hard to get into.

>> Is it far-fetched if I compare the decline of Nickelodeon with the

Where Nick started to lose it was around 1988 - 1989, when the
first generation of kids watching it were outgrowing it and listening
more to the radio or MTV. Around that time, shows like Clarissa Explains
It All were just not good to keep them entertained; especially when you
have something like Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again" keeping the guys
going for hours on end. They couldn't even keep their version of Looney
Toons going (really.. Bosco?!? Kool Cat? Bunny and Claude?)

So Nick had a great 7 - 8 year run, then it went south something
fierce, hasn't recovered, and probably never will.

The Japanese anime version? I'm pretty sure I hated that.

Wow, someone else remembers Today's Special. I remember watching that

Anyone else remember Buster and Me? Now that was a truly obscure show.

Depends on where you were. It was a production of TV Ontario, so
it may have been local on PBS stations close to/bordering Ontario.

BTW, OP: Nick started to become MTV Jr. long before Cat Dog, or
whatever that show is called. Case in point: Nick Rocks: Video To Go.

> Anyone else remember Buster and Me? Now that was a truly obscure show.

Can't say I do. But what I can say is, with great sadness, that
I remember the entire weekday schedule for Nick from launch to 1985.
Whether that is something to be proud of, I'm not sure!
