FRANKLIN — What happened to Jenna's video?
That's the question many people were left wondering about after
Wednesday night's episode of the television show "Survivor" in which
Franklin native Jenna Lewis broke into tears when she was the only one
of the nine contestants remaining in the reality-adventure show who
didn't receive a videotape from her family.
It turns out that Jenna's mom, Shirlene, had taken Jenna's 18-
month-old twin daughters on a vacation in late March, just when the
request came out from CBS-TV to the families of the show's participants
to prepare a video which would be used in one of the reward challenges.
And she didn't get the message until it was too late to make the
tape and get it to the island of Palau Tiga in time for the filming,
according to Colleen Sullivan of CBS-TV in Los Angeles.
"Her mom was devastated," said Sullivan, who said that once
Shirlene Lewis returned home and found out about the request she tried
at the very last minute to make a video and get it CBS but that it was
too late.
"We tried to hold off as long as we could," said Sullivan, who
wouldn't say whether or not the video will find its way into a
subsequent episode. But the official CBS Survivor web site does hint
that Jenna might receive letters from her children in next week's
episode "Old and New Bonds."
Jenna's dad, former Franklin Mayor Jim Lewis, also was on the
road, traveling as part of his insurance job. Lewis decided against
running for a second term last year due to his heavy travel schedule.
Jenna, incidentally, has been living in her brother's San
Francisco apartment since late May with her daughters, Sadie and
Sabrina. She is teaching herself how to play the guitar and taking
tennis lessons and voice lessons.
She was featured, along with fellow Survivor contestant, Sean, a
Long Island, N.Y., doctor, three weeks ago on CBS' "48 Hours." Both said
that they have always liked to get attention from other people and want
to pursue acting careers.
The fact that they were the first people to be interviewed on
television who had not already been voted off the island caused
widespread speculation among devotees of the popular show that one of
them might be the winner of the $1 million that will go the last
survivor.
Jenna survived the eighth episode on Wednesday night, even though
her three former Pagong tribe teammates all voted to oust her. Greg, who
along with Gervase and Colleen voted against Jenna, was booted off the
island by a 6-3 vote.
The Tagi alliance, composed of Richard, an openly gay corporate
consultant, ex-Navy SEAL Rudy, truck driver Susan and river rafting
guide Kelly, all voted to oust Greg, as did Sean, a former Tagi tribe
member who has pursued a policy of voting against other islanders in
alphabetical order.
Sean said that he would have voted against Gervase except for the
fact that Gervase, who according to the official Survivor website is
about to become the father of his fourth child born out of wedlock, won
the immunity challenge and couldn't be voted off the island.
Lewis, the resilient former Franklin High School track star, who
was featured on the cover of the June 26 issue of Time magazine, has
emerged as one of the most popular of the remaining contestants with the
25 million viewers who tune in each week for the show.
And her stock with viewers went up this week during the most
emotionally compelling episode of the series when she tried to fight
back tears of disappointment over the missing videotape and then
remained alone on the beach, shooting arrows at a target rather than
with the other contestants watching Greg's video.
That vulnerability, coupled with the strength that she showed in
rebounding to finish second in the immunity challenge, may yet prove to
be the winning combination which places her at or near the top of the
eight remaining contestants.

Thanks for posting this, Josh. I take back my wish to have Jenna's
mother taken out back and shot :-) Still seems kind of shoddy for CBS
not to have told Jenna *why* the video didn't arrive, surely they knew?

If anyone should be taken out and shot, it should be Jenna for voluntarily
leaving her two children to go off to some tropical island in pursuit of
prize money (and then whining about it). Of course, I guess the reason that
she would give for leaving the kids is that she was trying to win the
million dollars to ensure that they would have a brighter future. Well,
most people do that for their kids, it's called a J-O-B, and we usually only
have to go off and leave them for a few hours a day. If anything, Jenna's
mom should receive a large portion of whatever Jenna wins, since she went
out of her way to care for them while mommy was off playing survivor.

Not to mention in her bio she likes to go dancing at night. Go to bed
damn it, I've got to get to the Club and get my groove on!
Yeah, but I bet while she's drinking and dancing at the club she cries about how
much she misses her kids. Well, maybe not, there aren't any cameras to play to
there.
