Calgary trio top of heap

Locals bask in the limelight on Junkyard Wars

By LYNDA SEA -- Calgary Sun

One man's junk is another man's riches, and as three Calgarians battle
it out on Junkyard Wars, it could be said they are our Canadian treasure.

Being the first-ever Canadian team to compete in the history of the series,
longtime buddies Kevin Meehan, Gary Heald and Mike Garant were
immediately picked by the show from hundreds of applicants.

For Meehan, a used car mechanic, it was a complete surprise -- one that
came only a week after the application was sent in April.

In a six-minute video, the "Canada Junkeze" demonstrated the workings of
a four-cycle engine, each dressed in plaid shirts and goofy hats.

Meehan remembers the group saying "let's just do it, we aren't going to
make it anyways."

Perhaps it was that carefree attitude that got the attention of the show's
producers as the longtime friends were flown to California.

"The big picture is certainly more than what meets the eye," Meehan said
of the entire experience.

The temperature in the desert junkyard hovered around 40C and with no
shade, every man drank a gallon of water each day.

He promised a very climactic episode and even the show's producers told
them it was the most exciting episode they've filmed.

"It came down to a 1-in. piece of duct tape," said an amused Meehan. The
trio will see the show for the first time when it airs tonight at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m,
on Y.

For Meehan, he's just proud they were the first Canadians to show their
brains over brawn in the junkyard war.

"Win or lose, we'll always be first."

Cheers,

TD

And meaner than a junkyard dog

Whew, thanks, Maureen (and Default User)! Just too much on my TV
schedule this week and I didn't remember to check this week's ep.
