Can you help?

For my TV history project, I'm trying to list all Deaf
characters/people that appeared in any popular
series, TV game shows, quiz shows, TV dramas, and so
on in the UK and the rest of the world.

The most popular recollection was this little Deaf boy who
appeared in two episodes of DALLAS over ten years ago!

Can you remember anything else, and what did you think?

Thanks in advance!

Marlee Matlin played asst. D.A. Tess Kaufman in the early '90s drama,
Reasonable Doubts. She also played "The Dancing Bandit" on Picket Fences.
Since Ms. Matlin is deaf, so were her characters.

On Picket Fences, Marlee Matlin played the Dancing Bandit, who, as part
of her community service, became mayor of Rome. Her deafness just wasn't
an issue (which was good, but I always wanted to know how the interpreter
got payed).

On Due South, Diefenbaker is supposed to be deaf (though he sure seemed
to hear Benny yelling in "North").

Lou Ferrigno was about 80% deaf when he did "Incredible Hulk". Also,
there was that girl on "Facts of Life" and there is a stand-up
commedienne who is on tv from time to time who is deaf. That's all I
can think of right now. Cool way to get info for your paper! Don't have
to set one foot inside the library! Giving me ideas....

Methinks that Diefenbaker has conned poor Benny into thinking he's deaf.
I mean he always seems to hear the sound of a jelly doughnut or a milk
dud.

He's just like my dogs who never ever seem to hear you calling when its
bath time or time to go to the vet :-)

Linda Bove has been on Sesame Street for years. I believe she was in the
original Broadway cast of "Children of a Lesser God."

I don't know if she was really deaf, but she and "Jessica" talked
with sign language. I suppose she was reading lips, too.

L.A. Law -- Benny was played by Larry Drake. I don't remember him
being deaf, but he was retarded. His girl friend (Amanda Plummer)
might have been deaf as well as retarded. I am not sure either of
them is actually deaf. I don't think Larry is.

On the soap opera DAYS OF OUR LIVES, deafness has been used 3 times.
A young boy, Benjie, was even played by a young deaf actor. Although
you can't tell it today, but the show used to be well-written & paced
& do a good job of both entertaining & shedding light in a socially
relevant way. Benjie's deafness, Kayla's temporary deafness, learning
ASL, etc. were well done. When another young boy was made temporarily
deaf from proximity to an explosion, it was shorter & mostly a redux.
Let me know if you have questions.

Here's an incomplete tidbit or two from the daytime world - I suspect that
you could get details if you posted to the soap newsgroups.

There was a deaf child on the soap opera "Days of Our Lives" five or six
years ago...sorry, can't remember the actor's name. I think the character
was called Benjie.

There was also a deaf woman on "Santa Barbara" in the late 80s. She
played a nun (Sarah?). Excellent actress, deaf both real life and on the
show - as was the child on Days.

Sorry I don't have more detail for you. Good luck with the paper.

According to the pilot episode Dief does read lips, "but only if he sees
you." Dief time and time again has demonstrated that he does have a mind
of his own, so I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he could hear and was
just ignoring Fraser at times.

I think the writers to tend to use Dief as Fraser's alter ego and
consciense. In one ep Dief growls unapprovingly when Fraser is stealing
a box of Milk Duds to get into jail to help protect Ray. In another ep,
Dief gives Fraser "that look" after Fraser flirts with Meg Thatcher.

Seems to me the writers sometimes forget about his deafness (or maybe
Fraser does?) ... I've noticed many scenes where Fraser is talking to
Diefenbaker without even looking at him, even though in other scenes, he
turns the wolf's face toward his as though Dief' is able to read lips(!)

Of course, it could be dramatic license, or the constable's way of
thinking out loud as if he's talking to someone else.

Law & Order did an episode investigating the murder of a Deaf
woman and several of the people interviewed were Deaf. I can dig up
an episode name somewhere....

Everyone has already named all of Marlee Matlin's stuff. :)

There was an episode of Quantum Leap with this FABULOUS
Deaf dancer (Sam was there to help her get her career break).

Does no one else remember Marlee Matlin as the deaf prosecuting attorney
in the series with Mark Harmon? (Reasonable Doubts, I think the series
was called). Was on for at least 2 seasons here in the U.S., but I don't
know if it ever made it across any oceans.

Also, there was a deaf woman as a guest star on MacGyver. A Mac fan would
have to dig out that information....

I'm not sure of his name but I believe he was the characters Patch and
Kayla Brady's child. Either that or he was adopted by them, I really
can't remember.

As for a deaf character though, Benny(on LA Law) was deaf on the show
but not in real life, his real name escapes me though but he was in the
first two Darkman movies though as a gangster named Durant.

PS. Marlie Matlin was also in a TV show called Reanable Doubts with Mark
Harmon --

Benny (played by Larry Drake) wasn't deaf; he was mentally retarded.

Deaf Actor, Howie Seago played a deaf man who was a diplomatic mediator
on Star Trek: The Next Generation.

He was also on a controversial episode of "The Equalizer" with another
deaf actress and a HEARING actress playing a deaf woman (Cynthia Nixon)

Terrylene played a recurring role on "Beauty and the Beast" as a deaf
tunnel dweller.

And Marlee Matlin, who is deaf, played the same role in the film version;
as well as an assistant DA on NBC's "Reasonable Doubts". I think
she had a reoccuring role on CBS's Picket Fences.

In the New Outer Limits episode (year 1) titled "The Message", Marlee
Matlin appeared in a very touching tale that co-starred L.A. Law's Larry
Drake.

Also, in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Year 2's "Loud as a Whisper",
deaf actor Howie Seago appeared as a diplomat.

The character in question was named Tony, played by actor Solomon Smaniotto. He was a hearing-impaired young man adopted by Ray and Donna Krebbs on the Dallas tv show. I think the producers should have kept Solomon on the show. It's a shame that Solomon's character didn't last. I liked him.
