Murdoch Mysteries has had some silly stuff before. But this is by far
the silliest episode the show has ever had. And the most tragic. As
far as silliness goes, that should go without saying. I've seen a lot
of TV shows crib from movies but I think Murdoch Mysteries is the first
one to use the premise of Weekend at Bernies as they haul a dead witness
around for a couple of days to try to draw out the assassin for another
try, cheerfully ignoring the impossibilities like a room full of people
not smelling a two day old corpse in the same room with them and Henry
Higgins still having a job as a constable after first taking a nap while
the man he was supposed to protect walked out to get shot and then
killing the assassin he was supposed to take alive.

But what makes it tragic? Well they didn't just kill some random guy.
They killed Crabtree's nemesis, Roger Newsome "of the Mimico Newsomes".
Roger was vain, stupid, and a cheat who was introduced trying to frame
himself for murder just to claim that he was smarter than the other
members of the Puzzle Club and departed because he wanted to go to a
barber to fix up his already perfectly groomed hair before testifying.
He actually saw the crime while arranging to take a picture of a stuffed
bird to pretend that he'd seen a South American species in the wilds of
Ontario. But oddly, for a rich idiot who introduced himself as Roger
Newsome of the Mimico Newsomes...not really a snob. Crabtree hated his
guts, but Roger liked Crabtree and tried to fix up his sister with them.
She's having none of it because Higgins just managed to get himself a
girlfriend and thus has made himself inexplicably more attractive.

Still Crabtree does like Newsome better after he's dead and died giving
a cryptic clue of the kind Crabtree as a sensational novelist loves. He
actually eulogizes Newsome at the funeral. (Murdoch stands up as well,
but the only thing he can think of to say about Newsome is that he had
immaculate table manners. "It's true. It's so true," Miss Newsome
cries.) He even tells the bad guy that the credit belongs to Roger
Newsome "of the Mimico Newsomes" Roger Newsome. Rest in Peace. Or
not. I wonder how Crabtree will react when he finds out Newsome has an
identical cousin?

Not enough room for her in the plot. I wouldn't worry about it just yet.

This one was a bit too silly for me, although I was glad for the return
of Murdoch mentally placing himself in the crime scene.

Last night the local news had a story about people that are trying to
get a business going with some sort of special cribs that 'retard
decomposition' of babies so you can take your dead baby home for a
couple days and bond with it. It's supposed to help you get closure.
Clearly they need to equip it with motion devices like the wheeled chair
Murdoch outfitted.

Maybe I missed up or forgot... what happened last week
that looked like a break up?

Thanks

I saw the ending of an ep right before The Avengers came on.
I forget which ep it was, but I'm intrigued enough to try it out.

It's usually pretty good. And you've got 10 seasons worth to choose
from, plus the original movies with a different cast that Ian wouldn't
like, because, nekkid wymen.

He was being a jealous jerk about her having other men's calling and/or
flirt cards but ... yeah, they made up at the very end, didn't they?
She handed over her cards and he tossed 'em off the roof. So the
episode felt like a break up, but the denouement didn't. My bad.

The CBC will be rerunning last year's Christmas episode, though I forget
the date.

Really? I know one episode I did watch was the one at the nudist colony,
and that was bold since it was so early.

I don't think any of the TV series have had actual naughty bit nudity,
but the first movie starts out with a nekkid corpse, played by a real
actress, and they aren't shy about it.

Yes. The nudist colony one had everyone naked, but carefully obstructed
by objects. Surely that's not scary to some people?

Oh no. It's been shown in the US as the Artful Detective, but you can
find them as MM online somewhere.

It's been on the CBC for years, but had a life on another Canadian network
before that. It's one Canadian show that actually has lasted.
