For about a dozen times, I saw PBS running uncensored European films
with nudity (example: My Life as a Dog). While I think it's a good
sign, how's this possible? I thought FCC ruled out any showing of
nudiny on public television.

PBS has been broadcasting programs containing nudity, at least occasionally,
since the seventies.

Short explanation: it's art.

Not the PBS stations in Watertown (WNPE) and Norwood (WNPI) NY. They even
mentioned, during their funding drive a while back, that a poll of their
viewers suggests they prefer more conservative programming. We don't see
programs with nudity, violence or coarse language. Those two stations should
name themselves the "old black & white musical movie and Lawrence Welk reruns"
station.

I'm curious -- did they show the James Burke "Day the Universe Changed"
series, or his other science-history series? In one of these programs,
there was a scene of a medieval village on market day, with all sorts
of Breughel-looking peasant types doing colorful things. There was
a shot from above looking down on an attractive woman being placed in
a large tub, like for a ceremonial (or yearly :-) bath. This showed
full-frontal nudity for a few seconds. I was quite surprised by that
when I saw it; it was purely gratuitous and had absolutely nothing
to do with the program, just a shot of sex to liven things up. (In
case it isn't obvious, I'm in favor of it... :-)

WILL, the PBS station in Champaign-Urbana, IL, showed uncensored versions of
Easy Rider and The Last Picture Show, both containing nudity (and several
times) late at night a few years ago.
