Young lawyer, Ally McBeal (Flockhart), deals with her life and
troubles through flashbacks and fantasies. Forced to leave her job at a
law firm when one of the partners (Riehle) starts lecherously groping the
women in the office and she is subjected to several, Ally is met with
resistance when she demands his dismissal, due to his seniority and
prestige. Ally decides to sue the firm and loses her job for her effort.

Meeting an old school chum, Richard Fish (Germann) who runs his own
law firm, she accepts his offer of a job and quickly becomes one of their
brightest associates. The only problem is that her old boyfriend, Billy
(Bellows), who is now married, is also working at the firm. Ally must
overcome feelings she still has for him as well as learning to deal with
his wife Georgia (Thorne-Smith). Comedic aspects are introduced through
fantasy vignettes depicting what Ally is thinking or imagines as the
situations around her.

hurting his feelings. Ally must also defend John Cage (MacNicol), senior
partner of the firm on charges of procurring the services of a prostitute.

employment.

might have been, causing worry for Georgia. Ally and John Cage go on
their date; the latter getting the feeling that a relationship is not in
the offing.

A U.S. Senator (McCormack) is sued by a man (Rackham) for
"intentionally interfering with his marriage" when his wife (Giftos)
divorces him to marry the Senator. The overtones of the case impact
greatly upon the triangle of Billy, Georgia and Ally. Billy admits to
Georgia that he's still in love with Ally. Ally's closing argument at the
trial makes Billy and Georgia realize their love for each other.

by using the liver from a pig temporarily until a human liver was
available. Cage's smile therapist (Ullman) counsels Ally, assessing her

taking kick-boxing aerobics, are chosen to fight each other in a match
among the students. Attorney General Janet Reno (Gehringer) and Fish meet
once again, causing Whipper to leave Richard for good.

Ally and her new acqauintance (Martin) are involved in a car accident
and must contend with Oren Koolie (Evans), a 10-year old child prodigy
attorney, who can quote every Supreme Court ruling in the last 10 years.
Ally discovers that Koolie's feelings are easily hurt, a result of a
rushed childhood. Richard tackles a bizarre sexual harrassment case where
the plaintiff (Dunford) contends that she didn't get deserved promotions
because she didn't sleep with the boss (Farrell).

a little insight on the character of Elaine and her motivations.

no memory of the killing. The firm asks for assistance from the law

that show. In another case, a heterosexual waiter is fired for not
being gay. Renee is charged with assault after taking offense with a
date's (Washington) forward advances.

sues for emotional and physical damages.

firm (and the series) after Fish scores a coup by winning her away from
her previous law firm. The women in the office take an immediate
disliking to Nelle due to her good looks and winning ways in the courtroom.

seeks counsel with Richard, regarding the matter, who assigns Ally to get
to the bottom of it. Ally's resulting discovery that men fall out of love
as easily as they fall in, makes Ally realize her relationship with Billy
fell apart the same way.
