American Comedian Chris Farley Dies At 33

By Andrew Stern

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Comedian Chris Farley, the overweight actor who
played overbearing characters with a sweet side on television and in
movies, has died, police say.

Farley, 33, was found dead Friday in a condominium apartment on
Chicago's Near North Side that was believed to belong to a friend.
Authorities said he suffered an apparent heart attack and there was no
sign of foul play.

Farley, who was reared in Madison, Wis., was an alumnus of Chicago's
Second City, the famed improvisational troupe, where he developed
anguished characters and excelled at the group's brand of sketch comedy.

His career blossomed when he joined the Second City, a well-worn path to
television's Saturday Night Live, the show he joined in 1990 and where
he stayed for five seasons.

Farley's physical comedy and manic behavior often drew comparisons to
the late John Belushi, one of his idols and also a Saturday Night Live
veteran.

Movie critic Gene Siskel said the key to Farley's brand of comedy was
playing an "out-of-control" character who threw a lot of weight around.
"This was an unhealthy condition you were witnessing. I kept saying I
was worried about this guy," he said.

Besides being a huge fan of Belushi, Farley was reported to emulate some
of Belushi's off-screen indulgences in alcohol and drugs. Belushi died
from a drug overdose in 1982.

Among Farley's best-known characterizations were the inept and
overweight motivational speaker Matt Foley and that of a devoted but
extremely unhealthy Chicago Bears football fan.

Farley and David Spade branched out from the television show to star in
movies that featured slapstick, often gross routines.

After appearing in small roles in the two "Wayne's World" movies and
"The Coneheads", Farley had starring roles in "Airheads" in 1994, "Billy
Madison" and "Tommy Boy" in 1995, "Black Sheep" in 1996 and "Beverly
Hills Ninja" earlier this year. He was set to star in at least three
more movies.

He even managed an appearance in front of Congress, doing an
impersonation of House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Al Franken, a colleague at Saturday Night Live, said of Farley on Los
Angeles' KCAL-TV: "There was a vulnerability spiced with genius; a real
talent. I wish there was another 50 years of that. The man was a
sweetheart."

Wisconsin-born and educated, Farley took jobs with an oil company and
had a stint as a hardware store clerk before turning to comedy
full-time. As a student, Farley described himself as a "class clown" and
"teacher's nightmare."
