There is no way a show like Ripper Street could be shown on PBS, at
least not much of it. I'm wondering if BBC America is as bound by
regulation/puritanical? In other words, do they need to get a final
OK from Jesus Christ like other American TV does?

You know that BBC America is a satellite channel and thus is not subject
to decency standards in American communications law as broadcast stations
are, right?

That being said, BBC America has edited shows for content in the past, but
may make the European edit available On Demand. I haven't noticed a
difference lately, though.

The UK version of Being Human was routinely censored by BBCA for sex
and language. They also cut about thirteen minutes out of each episode
past its initial run so they could squeeze the show and commercials
into an hour-long slot. I don't know how PBS would have treated the
sex and language.

Did BBC America make the original cut available On Demand? I never watched.

I got the original BBC version Ripper ep 01 online, and that version had
(corpse) nudity - did the the BBCA ver ?

Also I watched the BBC original ver of the latest The Hour, and it had
brief nudity in the niteclub scenes - was it cut for BBCA?

No, it didn't. Not only that, but the DVDs sold via BBC America were
the "American cuts" of the original episodes.

If you were a fan of the original series, the only thing to do was find
it online somewhere. Each episode was usually available the same
evening it was broadcast.

I watched the BBCA show about the high school guy who was some kind of
demon. They bleeped lots of F words. Don't know how the nudity compared
with the original.

Uh...why not? The only problematic part was the naked cadaver and that
was in fact subtlely censored on Canadian cable (and for all I know on
the original broadcast)

PBS broadcasts more nudity than any of the other national broadcast networks
in the US.
