First of all, I like Jeff Goldblum and the other guy as her two dads.
But it raises a question I've had since the pilot episode maybe.

In the first episode where we see Rachel narrated about her two gay
dads, she has a photo of them in her locker. Obviously, it wasn't
jeff goldblum and the other guy, but it seemed to me that in that
photo, one of them was white and one black. And the white was fairly
blonde.

I thought there was a joke I was missing, but I was never sure which
joke: That Rachel didn't know which of her dads was her biological
father, in spite of one of them being caucasian and one of them being
black; and the other was the white was was fairly pale, and Rachel/Lea
Michelle is dark-featured, and thus a combination of a white and black
dad (so to speak.)

Did anyone else notice this in the pilot??

That was the joke, sure. I didn't recall that it was in the pilot. Uh,
no, she's not supposed to be mixed race, but the whitest girl you know.

Yes.

I don't have a problem with them using different actors but one of the
two *should* have been black.

What, you expect the casting director to watch the show?

Brian Stokes MItchell, who plays Leroy, the dad who is not Jeff
Goldblum, is black.

I guess somebody thinks he is; he's played Coalhouse Walker.

IMDb sez his ancestry is German, Scottish, African, and Native American,
and his father was a Tuskegee airman. One of his quotes is that no one
knew how to cast him because he looks so different.

Rachel's gag is ruined. She could be this guy's biological daughter.

He looks black to me. What, do you think that all blacks have to look
like they come from Somalia or something?

He might have had a darker complexion than Lea Michelle. The point was
to preserve the gag.

Several of us were commenting a couple weeks ago that he looked black to
us...at least enough so that there was no 'retcon' beyond the picture.

Modern Family dispelled that joke this past week.

I don't watch that show. What was the gag?

Two gay guys used 'the swirl method' to combine their sperm and have a
surrogate mother carry a child to term for them. The idea of the 'swirl
method' was that neither man would know which one was the biological father
(same sort of setup as on GLEE). Needless to say, the two men were
different colors (one white, one brown) and it was instantly clear* by
looking at the child which one was the biological father.

*NOTE: of course, not knowing the ethnic background of the mother, the
viewer has to assume that her contribution would not effect the outcome.

Yeah, I had my kvetch, but they also retconned details about her
mother, saying she was a surrogate, and this year, getting some
teenage mother bonding with Quinn, which makes it more likely that she
would have been to young to enter into a surrogate arrangement.

Rachel is a doppelganger.

Ah, so the same joke they used on the second season of Arrested
Development.
