'Veronica Mars' movie is a go! 'My mind is blown' says Rob Thomas --
EXCLUSIVE
by Erin Strecker

You did it, Marshmallows!

Less than 11 hours after Rob Thomas and Kristen Bell announced a
Kickstarter campaign, fans have raised the $2 million necessary to
finance a Veronica Mars movie. It’s officially on!

“My mind is blown. I’ve been fantasizing about this and had to tell
myself, ‘Stop it, Rob, you’re being silly. You’re setting yourself up
for disappointment,’” the Mars creator tells EW. “And now today has
exceeded the wildest pipe dream I let myself entertain. Holy cow. We
better make a good movie. These amazing fans have stepped up. We
better deliver.”

“I knew Veronica Mars fans were cool, but I had no idea they could
rally with such power. They are unstoppable — just like Veronica. I
will have a permanent blush on my face, feeling so lucky to be
associated with this entire thing,” says Bell.

The goal was to raise $2 million in 30 days. Warner Bros. Digital
Distribution has agreed to put the movie into production and pick up
the tab for marketing, promotion, and distribution. But exhibiting a
passion that broke Kickstarter records in just six hours, fans have
been flocking to the site since the page went up at 7:30 a.m. PT. And
even though the goal has been reached, pledges can keep coming in.
In a previous interview with EW, Thomas spilled details about the
upcoming movie’s plot, which will include — no surprise — murder,
mystery and a high-school reunion. It will film this summer and be
released in early 2014.

Don’t know what all the fuss is about? Now is the perfect time to
catch up: The entire three-season run is streaming in full over on
TheWB.com (the show originally aired from 2004-2007).

It just hope they bring back some of the better guest-stars, like
Alona Tal and Krysten Ritter.

Seriously?

I think the only really critical character that absolutely HAS to be in
the movie is Veronica, although I'd be pretty disappointed if Keith
didn't make it.

Which is not to say that I'm indifferent to Logan or various other
characters being in it. But I think any of the other characters could
have their absences explained plausibly in a pinch.

Are you just being facetious or do you really think Piz is absolutely
essential?

Did the people who participated in this stunt actually have their credit
cards debited, or did they just check a box on a website "promising" to
give money?

Agreeing to contribute places an order with Amazon.com that goes through

At the risk of gushing, I'm surprised someone could like her less for
her talk-show appearances. She seems like a lovely person. Though she
does make poor career decisions.

On a 2 million dollar budget? Not unless they all agree to work free
and SAG gives them a waiver for even paying scale.

I expect the budget will be significantly higher than that.

First, the Kickstarter campaign is only a day old, and it's already
closing in on $3M. I could easily imagine it hitting $5M or more by the
time it's done.

Second, I suspect that they'll be able to parlay this into studio
backing, which should get them real funding.

If she's on a talk show, she's not making a horrid romantic comedy or another
episode of Heroes.

She needs to do something with her career, so returning to her role of
a lifetime is heading in the right direction despite going backwards.

You see what happens when your movie career tanks?

At least it isn't a self-inflicted wound. Or at least, not like say
David Caruso's -- she might get some blame in script/project selection
mistakes.

She needs to hire Andie McDowell's agent. A person with almost no
talent as an actress, who made a career out of choosing great
projects.

You make an actual payment through Amazon.com, but the payment does not
go through until the end of the appeal on Kickstarter, which in this
case is 30 days. You're told the date and time, and you can withdraw
your pledge up until that time. Then Kickstarter will actually run all
the charges.

They killed off Lisa Rinna, IIRC. (I don't think Carpenter's character
is dead...)

Of course, they also killed off Seyfried and Tal. Still, there's no
reason why any/all of them couldn't show up in the movie, either in
flashbacks, or in dream sequences...

Both of which are *maybe* dead. There were Tweets yesterday from people

Both "dead"

Rinna parked her car on the Coronado (?) Bridge and jumped, caught on
tape, but the tiny image was unrecognizable and IIRC they never found
the body. Carpenter was on the lam from somebody and in a hotel or
something and vanished into the desert. Both deaths felt more like they
couldn't strike a deal with the actress than that there was actually any
story reason for the character to die.

Most of the cast of VM has done next to nothing since that show ended. They
can get most of them cheap. The ones who do make money might work for a
lower salary in exchange for points profit participation. I can't imagine
they care about making a movie they know will be a failure. There wouldn't
be much point in that.

I don't think commercial exploitation of a known property would be a

I seem to remember an interview where Thomas said Charisma's character
definitely was in a shallow grave behind that shack. She did get shot
by someone standing right in front of her who had time to bury the body
