On "virtual D&D night" , I watched:

Nothing.

What did you watch?

--
Every American should want President Trump and his administration to
handle the coronavirus epidemic effectively and successfully. Those who
seem eager to see the president fail and to call every administration
misstep a fiasco risk letting their partisanship blind them to the
demands not only of civic responsibility but of basic decency.

Les Miserables (HBO Go) - FTR, I had never seen the musical before
this. IMO, the non-musical 1998 version is so much better than this
2012 musical version that it's not even funny! I found Geoffrey Rush's
take on the Javert character fascinating, and similarly Liam Neeson is
a much better Valjean. I will acknowledge that the one really good
thing in the 2012 version is Anne Hathaway. Even the music in this
isn't even particularly good IMO - there's maybe only 2 good numbers:
"One Day More" and the closing number. I will give them props for one
thing: I did kind of like the ending.

soaps: B&B - OMG! This was a Jennifer Finnigan episode!! (Along with
Brian Gaskill - WEHT him?!!) Anyway, this 2003(?) episode was mostly
silly, as Stephanie and Sally get drunk, and then Sally cuts off all of
Stephanie's hair! I did like Stephanie's reaction: "It's pretty
hip-hop!" LOL.

Wimbleton (HBO Go) - If you have an appreciation of tennis, this movie
is kind of fun (even it the premise is pure malarkey!). And they
actually manage to sneak a fair bit of that in here, amongst the
romatic dramedy stuff. I enjoyed the supporting cast - Sam Neill, a
seemingly very young James McAvoy, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau's as Paul
Bettany's friend, practice parnter, and sometime rival. The one sour
note was they went cliched with the American tennis player played by
Austin Nichols (WEHT him?!!) - it would have been nice at the end if
they'd played against type with this.

The 100 (OnDemand) - "False Gods" (ep. #7.3). And we're back to the
s*** show in Sanctum. However, this episode did have one novel
development - Raven lying and sending people to their deaths, in a
somewhat interesting "reactor is about to meltdown" subplot that was
obviously ripped right off from "Chernobyl" - still: if you're going to
steal, steal from the best!! The rest of this was the usual political
crap with the various factions still bickering, and
Sheidheda-as-Russell plotting to save his hide and take over.
(Sidenote: No Madi at all this episode.)
Next episode: Looks like the people from "Beta" finally show up in
Sanctum proper. (And will we finally see Bellamy again?!...)

It: Chapter 2 (HBO Go) - Well, the good news was that this was *much*
better than Part 2 of the 1990 "It" TV miniseries. Like, *way* better.
And there was some fun dialogue in here. But I agree with the reviewers
- this one doesn't really have any "scares", and it is way, *way* too
long! clocking in at almost 3 hours - they really needed to try to trim
45 minutes out of this one and get it down to about 2 hours. As it is,
the flick definitely loses momentum in the last third... But, I did
like it overall, even if it wasn't as good as "Part I".

Recorded for later: The 'Hundred[sic], and SHIELD!!

"Who would ever do this to him!?" - HottCiara on DOOL (04-27-2020), asking
who would stab Victor Kirakis... How about ANYONE WHO'S EVER MET HIM??!!

I had a similar reaction. I know I did see the stage musical around the
same time. Maybe a year or so before the movie, or perhaps the other
way around. I recall being unimpressed with the live version as well.

I won't bother to ask how they pulled off interstellar travel. But are
the people on the planet they are dealing with supposed to be human?
Not sure why I care, but I was just wondering if this is a human built
reactor or not.

I think that's probably about how I felt when I saw it in the theater.
Whenever I get around to watching part 2, I'll probably double feature
it with the first 1, so it'll end up taking up all day to get through
them both.

OWN Spotlight: Where Do We Go From Here? Part 1 and 2 - Oprah special
about current events. Thanks to Robin for listing this in the
"premiers" thread the other day and putting it on my radar.

Agents of SHIELD - "Alien Commies from the Future!" SHIELD agents from
the 50s have to deal with "Alien Commies from the Future!" I guess it
was OK. I was very happy for the "turtle" quote.

Platoon (blu-ray) 1986 Oliver Stone movie about a platoon of soldiers
during the Vietnam War. Charlie Sheen stars as a privileged young man
who volunteers for active duty and is disheartened by what he sees
taking place, particularly how his fellow soldiers treat the people they
are supposed to be protecting. The movie is loaded with name actors
including Willem Dafoe, Tom Berenger, Keith David, Forest Whitaker Toddy
Todd, and Johnny Depp who Wikipedia says was in the movie, but I sure
didn't see him.

With an upcoming Spike Lee Vietnam War movie and several Oliver Stone
movies I've been planning to watch soon, I thought I should add that
Oliver Stone "Vietnam war movie" starring Martin Sheen to my watch list.
Last night I finally had some time with nothing else on to watch it. I
went to my movie shelf and reached for "Apocalypse Now" and saw it's
directed by Francis Ford Coppola. I gave it some thought and
remembered, it must be "Full Metal Jacket." WRONG! Did Stone even make
a Vietnam War movie? So I look up Wiki and its says he directed
"Platoon." Platoon?!?! Do I even *have* Platoon? Checking the shelf,
and it turns out I do. And as the opening credits roll, it stars
Charlie Sheen. Close enough... And as an added bonus, the movie stars
Keith David whose in 2 different John Carpenter movies currently on my
watch list. Everything comes full circle.

If you're into tennis, they leave a lot on the table (e.g. the fact
that Wimbleton is tennis "on grass", which is very different from the
other surfaces to play tennis on, they don't touch on at all...). But
it's still a pretty decent attempt on the sport.

Yes - the original Sanctum inhabitants are the human descendants of the
people who interstellar-travelled there 200(?) years earlier.

And, yes - they have mostly glossed over how interstellar travel is
even possible in "The 100" universe...

Anyway, we got Peggy Carter.

Coming up, an episode entitled "A Trout In the Milk"

Oh, I forgot:

DOOL - Sami's and Lucas' SORAS'ed teen daughter (Allie?) shows up in
Salem, and looks to be almost as big a handful as Crazy Claire!!
Meanwhile Rafe loses custody of the kid to NuZoey, who promptly leaves
town with the kid. (This will set up Rafe leaving town too, I'm sure...)

Yeah, the actor's leaving; I thought maybe he'd snatch David and go into
hiding, but he's probably going to move to wherever Zoe lives.

The Carter from last night had a "fake" British accent. ;-)

I forgot to mention, I also watched "What We Do in the Shadows" -
"Théâtre des Vampires" - Season finale that finds the vampires trying to
cope without Guillermo while taking up an invite to attend an exclusive
vampire theater, I mean theatre. Lots of spoilersish callbacks in this
one. It was an OK finale.

Have I not warned you repeatedly about this movie? Stop kill filing me!

The director, Tom Hooper, murdered this movie. You don't hire a director
to adapt musical theater to a movie musical utterly lacking a feel for
music. Russell Crowe, second lead, cannot sing at all, but he was cast
because the director was going for "realistic", not for "an actual
singer capable of performing in musical theater".

Anne Hathaway lost even more weight that Rooney Mara did the year
before. Could we make it a rule that insane actresses are not eligible
to be nominated for acting Oscars?

Yes, I know that's a straight line.

Yes, but that is insanely too fast, even in "The Expanse" universe, and
"The 100" shouldn't even be that advanced...

Well, I don't think it's completely horrible. (But I'm not a "musical
theater" fan, so I won't be as outraged at this film's "transgressions"
as some...)

I think my main point is that the non-musical 1998 film is about a
zillion times better...

Cryogenics and lots of time. They didn't exactly "gloss over" it, it
was even a plot point in how they wrote out one cast member and replaced
him.

> What did you watch?

MARVEL'S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. / 7x03 / Alien Commies from the Future!

[A surprise leap forward in time has stranded Enoch in 1931 and landed
the team in yet another unfamiliar decade. Now, in order to stop the
chronicoms from launching their newest future-dismantling plan, the
agents will have to infiltrate one of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s most secure bases.
They won't be able to succeed without help from a familiar face or two.]

"Getting to the bottom of this may be difficult. If the Chronicoms have
infiltrated, they would all look and act exactly like this."
"Okay, but now you're just trafficking in stereotypes."

"How does it make you feel when I say the word "moist"? Moist."
"P-Please stop."
"Moist."
"Yeah, you're good."

"I should have known something was fishy when everyone was saying how
nice this Sharpe guy was. I always heard he was a jerk of the highest
order."
"That's not inaccurate."
"And the lady pretending to be Carter? Worst fake accent you've ever heard."
"You should tell her that."

"Two Chronicoms. Good to know."

"Earthling. You will not reveal what you've seen here today, or the next
time we abduct you...you will be...probed."

Tons of fun in the desert. Simmons does a good Peggy Carter
impersonation as she and Coulson get creative in their attempts to
identify a Chronicom in their midst at Area S.H.I.E.L.D. Is it HER fault
that Peggy's old beau happens to be so committed to his job? We learn
that Chronicoms are better than Duracells when you really need to power
something that would otherwise be nothing more than a really big
paperweight, and we learn that Agent Sousa is still pretty cool. We
watch as May has her first panic attack ever. And we listen as the
writers, condescending and secure in their beliefs of their moral
superiority, mock the general mindset of the 50s, presumably unaware
that people in the 2090s will be mocking theirs in much the same way.
Because some in every generation will always be convinced that they have
it all figured out and that there is no further evolution of thought to
be had.

Other thoughts:

* The actress playing Jemma had WAY too much fun as Peggy and gave a few

We forgot that the Cromicons also have some weird "Oracle" chyck who
bares a suspicious resemblence to a chyck who used to be on the
original "Part of Five"...

I've actually been secretly rooting for "SHIELD" to get cancelled for
years, because I'd like to see Henstridge in a more interesting role.
She gave hints of what you're saying in the Hallmark X-Mas flick she
did...

Yep. Probably best known for "The Mentalist", but Gaston has been in a
million different things.

I liked it too, although the 'all white guys are bad' bit wasn't exactly
subtle.

So a primitive EMP takes out Comicons? That's ... a problem for them. I see
no reason Simmons can't rig pocket EMPs that will take out the bad guys
effortlessly.

So-usa was holding Simmons and the Son of Coulbot somewhere he hoped it was
worth the drive? Where? They were obviously on the base.
So-usa works in Los Angeles and just showed up but ... apparently runs the
base and has an office there?
When they first arrive at Area 51, the camera cranes up to reveal a short
stretch of road that ends in barren desert as far at the eye can see. But in
the next shot there are people and buildings, and there's a huge gamma bomb
that's right nearby later but they don't notice now?
So the Gamma bomb has been triggered and is going to go off before anybody
can get to safety but wait it's actually not a problem at all unless the
Comicon hooks herself up to it?

Michael Gaston. The only thing I can remember him in where he wasn't an

Only Ian would want SHIELD to die so one of the actresses could star in

Does she still have powers? 'Cause all she does is fight hand-to-hand

be getting her ass routinely kicked by all these men who outweigh her by

She used her powers in the 50s. She *tried* to use them in the last
episode, but couldn't for reasons I don't understand.

She didn't seem to after he took her glands, but she didn't seem to BEFORE
either. I assumed she was drugged or in some kind of dampening cuffs.

Which at this point is anybody that weight more than about 120.
