It was sung by the woman married to the white guy. (She died a few years
ago.. She was the mother of the guy Lisa Bonet was married to... Wow am I being
vague or what?)

BTW, the late Roxie was the mother of Lenny Kravitz (formerly known as Romeo
Blue and former hsuband of Lisa Bonet).

The song was sung by Ja'net Du Bois, who also played Wilona on "Good Times"

Roxie Roker, who played Helen Willis, did die recently. She did not sing
the opening song, but she did give birth to Lenny Kravitz (It Ain't over
'til it's over), who was briefly married to Lisa Bonet

I seem to remember hearing that it was Roxie Roker. She played
the neighbor who lived down stairs. Her daugher Jenny married the
Jeffersons son Lionel.

She passed away last year.

Actually the woman who sang the theme to the Jefferson's was not Roxie Roker
but Janet Dubois who played Wilona on Good Times.
