What do you mean, imaginary world? There are imaginary cities and
countries, but the Earth is not imaginary.

From what I can tell, the Capsule Corporation is g\headquartered in
Japan. Goku's first battle with Vegeta took place in Monument Valley in
Utah. (See the rock formations in the background.)

If you saw a map of the DB/Z/GT world, you would know that it isn't our
world. Toriyama CREATED it. It isn't real.

You're thinking on the wrong terms, the DBZ world isn't a mirror of ours, it
is it's own individual world with totally different land masses and
divisions of said land masses. Ask someone with a Daizenshuu if you want
exact answers, but as far as I can piece together there are 4 major
landmasses in DBZ and none are really designated as countries. Each has it's
own capitol (north, south, east, west) and some kind of distinguishing
feature. That's about all I know, didn't someone scan in a pic of the DBZ
world map once?

The world of Dragonball is an imaginary one. He is, however, very,
very loosely based on a Chinese folklore character.

Yes, you are right. The legend that you speak of features a monkey, whose
Chinese name is the same as Goku's Chinese name, Ng Hung (or something like
that).

BTW, I've seen or heard about at least a couple more series where they had
that legend. There was one called Monkey Magic, a series that was more
tightly based on the monkey than DBZ, though I don't know how tightly based
it is.

The other one had a movie concerning that legend. If you remember Doraemon
(or Ding Dong in Chinese), you should know that the kid that the cat robot's
supposed to help, Nobita, assumed Goku's Chinese character, and in one
scene, he rode the cloud that we in North America know as the Flying Nimbus.
