Hollywood's most famous actor interpreting Shakespeare, Lawrence
Olivier, has played Othello. Traditionally, a white actor performs
Othello, a Moor, in skin-darkening makeup. (Note that the article
incorrectly refers to it as "blackface", which is used for caricature.)

A celebrated music professor at University of Michigan, Bright Sheng,
showed the 1965 film adaptation to undergrad composing students to
illustrate how text is incorporated into opera.

But students freaked out Olivier and condemned the professor. He issued
multiple apologies, but the thing these days is that apologies don't get
accepted. That ignores the fact that the movie is decades old and all
the principles associated with the production are dead and that the
professor was using it to illustrate how music was used successfully.

The professor will no longer teach the class.

Is it worth pointing out that Sheng was born in China and survived the
Cultural Revolution, only to have this happen to him in the United
States?

Gee. If I had paid that kind of tuition, I'd want to be taught by a
MacArthur fellow and a Pulitzer Prize finalist. Maybe he'd have something
to teach me.

But I'm weird.

A Blackface 'Othello' Shocks, and a Professor Steps Back From Class

Students objected after the composer Bright Sheng showed the 1965 film
of Laurence Olivier's "Othello" to his class at the University of
Michigan.

Never apologize to the 'progressive' mob. It gets you nowhere and it
allows them to say, "See? He admits he's a --ist/--phobe!"

No, 'progressives' aren't self-aware enough to sense that irony.

Afaik, SOME "progressives" just want healthcare, choice, and to vote...

Indeed, loudly and publicly tell the woketards to fuck off and make the college
put its money where its claimed progressive ideals are and force them to fire
you, at which point you sue their ass off for a bazillion dollars.

Well, you have Obamacare, "choice" is vague but I suspect you have the
ability to make all sorts of choices in your life (except whether to
keep both your job and your bodily integrity), and I guarantee next time
you go to the polls, you'll be able to vote.

Other than felons and illegals and under 18s, who can't vote?

And even felons and illegals and under 18s have Obamacare.

Nonwhites in Georgia without 3 hours to kill.

And *they* can get Blue Cross/Blue Shield. (Or eat.)

Pity that those ones don't see fit to disassociate themselves from the usual malcontents that typify most of that group. For every pragmatic, thoughtful progressive there are 10 maniacs.

Why is that shithead moviePig in my thread, ruining it? I wanted to
discuss the fate of a famous music professor.

Post-Trump, I'm surprised a Conservative would mention "disassociation".

First, crack your dictionary and update yourself on the definition of "to
borrow".

Second, is it NPR's contention is that a black person in Buckhead (Georgia's
richest neighborhood) can't vote if she doesn't have three hours to spare?
Really?

I'm gonna need proof of that.

Conversely, the poor whites in Benteen Park in southeast Atlanta have no wait
times?

L.A. County had wait times of six hours or more at many polling places in the
last major elections. Are the 'progressives' who run this deep blue city, in
this deep blue county, in this deep blue state racist also? Do we officially
not have the right to vote because of that?
