It came as the shocker I think they intended but was there some
behinds the scenes skulduggery that lead up to it?

You can find a lot of information at the Internet Movie Database (IMDb).

Gary Dourdan's biography contains this information:

Arrested at 5:21am on April 29, 2008 in Palm Springs, California for
possession of heroin, cocaine, ecstasy and prescription drugs. Was given
a diversion by the judge on May 28.

In 2008, following Dourdan's major drug arrest and negotiations problems
with CBS, his "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" (2000) contract was not
renewed. In the Season 8 finale, Dourdan's character was shot and left
for dead at the episode's end. The Season 9 premiere had Dourdan's
character dying in the arms of his colleague Grissom (William Petersen).

I'm not sure if his drug arrest came before or after he was let go from CSI.
You have to wonder if a drug habit played a part in them getting rid of him.

Dourdan was arrested after police found suspected cocaine, heroin, Ecstacy,
miscellaneous prescription drugs and paraphernalia in his car Monday
morning.

There was a contractual problem before the arrest. He was not happy
with the lack of any story for his character (which supposedly had
been promised) before anything untoward had happened. He hadn't
planned on coming back for another season, the drug arrest made
certain he wouldn't be back in future episodes (a la Tim Speedle in
CSI:Miami) at all.

DIdn't he have substance abuse problems earlier in CSI's run?

And IIRC, Rory Cochrane didn't have substance abuse problems -- he
just hated the TV grind and wanted to go back to doing movies
(nevermind that he recently did 24.)

I know his character did (along with gambling issues), not sure if he
did or not. I just know that he had said in March or April that he
wouldn't return for the next season. CBS/suits said they were in
contract negotiations, then he got popped for paraphenalia, and his
job as Warrick was *done* done.

No, he wanted away because he was tired of the technical/chemical
terminology. He had said it was wearing him out. He asked to be let
out of an existing contract (with 2 or 3 more years). TPTB did let
him out on the proviso that he could be brought back, periodically.

I suspect (though have no proof) that this was just Dourdan's 'cover
story' - it's likely that, before these interviews, CBS had already let
him know that he wouldn't be coming back because of his drug issues.

CBS never denied that they weren't going to give Warrick the story
lines that had been promised though (they admitted they weren't, it
wasn't just a lack of comment), that's why I don't know that drugs
were issue prior to the arrest, but I bet there were alot of "phews"
going on *after* the arrest (since they didn't have to worry about
*that* pr).
