Catherine Tate Set to Return to 'The Office' as Series Regular
by Philiana Ng

More Nellie Bertram is on the way.

ason, expect Catherine Tate to be back in a bigger role, The Hollywood
Reporter confirms -- as in, series regular status.

Over the course of two seasons, Tate -- whose first appearance was in
the season-seven finale "Search Committee" -- has appeared in more
than 10 episodes of the veteran NBC comedy.

The news solidifies the returns of all of The Office's major players,
minus executive producer/star Mindy Kaling, who will be toplining Fox
comedy The Mindy Project this fall, and James Spader, who exited after
season's end.

The series also recently tapped two executive producers, Dan Sterling
and Brent Forrester, for the new season.

TVLine first reported the news.

As long as it keeps her off anything I'd want to watch.

I might sample The Office again since she's on the show. I know Fred
didn't like her on "Dr Who" but I really liked the character and was
sad that she left after only a single season.

Then what's she doing at Dunder-Mifflin? They're upstairs.

Then she must be a LOT better here than she was on Doctor Who, where I
just quit watching the show entirely 'till they got rid of her.

It's hardly worth generating new material for flotsam like you.

This makes no sense, within the world of the show or the real world.
There's no reason for the character to still have a job, when she does
nothing, and tried to steal the job of the guy who is now back in
charge. There's no reason for the actress to have a job, when the
reaction to her character was overwhelmingly negative, from everything
I've read and everyone I've talked to.

They explained Nellie having a job last season by saying that she was
friends with the CEO. Now that the CEO is gone, the only explanation
is that Tate is friends with one of the producers.

They showed in the finale that Andy is too soft to fire her, and he
ended up giving her some other job title.

I thought she got some of the better jokes in the episodes she was in.
The character was intentionally hateable, and I guess people reacted
negatively to the improbable way she wormed her way into being the
boss, but maybe in her new position she'll be better used.

So it's good casting then.

I absolutely hated her character at first, but the writers wisely made
her more sympathetic over several episodes. By the time the season
ended, I found myself reluctantly pulled into not only tolerating her,
but appreciating some of her funnier moments, the best of which was
the way she eats tacos.

I had a hard time buying that. He had the balls to do what he had to
do to get his job back, but not to get rid of the person who cost him
the job in the first place? They spent a good chunk of the season
trying to convince us that Andy is a competent manager, and then he
lets a crazy woman have a job doing whatever she wants. If I remember
the season finale correctly, she came right out and told him that she
was going to do whatever she wants.

She made me laugh on a few occasions, but those laughs came at the
expense of dragging the show further away from believability.

They missed a chance to refill the tank when Steve Carell left. They
could have breathed new life into the show by giving some of the
underutilized cast members some more to do. Instead, it became the Ed
Helms Show. People were interested in who was going to replace Carell
because Carell is a big star, not because we actually care that much
about the position of regional manager.

You're talking about The Office, right? Because that's pretty much exactly
the trajectory she followed in Doctor Who... well, except for the tacos.

Right.

The trick on "The Office" was to make her abrasive persona a facade,
behind which was a truly pathetic character.

I believe he asked her what she's best at, so he's putting her in a
position where she'll be able to contribute the most. And imo not
being able to deliver the killing blow fit his personality of being a
sunny, positive person. The writers probably see him firing her as a
step backwards to the anger issues he was supposed to have overcome
and to not being worthy of Erin.

If he still had anger problems, he would have done more than fire her,
he would have called her a bunch of names that they would have had to
bleep, and thrown all her stuff out the window. Firing her wouldn't
have been about anger, it would have been about doing his job. For a
business that is constantly on the verge of collapse (for any
business, really) to have her on the payroll is crazy.
