For fans of either the Cutting Edge or Christy Carlson Romano or both, the
Family Channel is premiering The Cutting Edge II tonight at 7e/6c and then
again at 9e/8c. They are running the original movie immediately ahead of the
first showing of the sequel. I haven't seen an advance copy so I have no
idea whether this is any good or not. I find it interesting that the female
skater has the same last name as the male skater in the original. I can't
tell if this is a remake of the original or a true sequel. Does anyone else
know?

From Titantv.com:

This sequel to 1992's "The Cutting Edge" focuses on Doug and Kate's
figure-skating daughter, Jackie (Christy Carlson Romano), a fierce
competitor who falls for a laid-back in-line skater (Ross Thomas). Scott
Thompson Baker and Stepfanie Kramer costar as Jackie's parents. Directed
by Sean McNamara.

Comes out on DVD on March 28th.
D.B. Sweeney and Moira Kelly are not in this sequel, though.
It is basically a rehash of the original.

Relating the two (by blood) was a totally unnecessary move, IMHO - they
should have just done a similar story to the original, with totally
unrelated characters.

Which would have been a remake rather than a sequel, puttin in the
company of movies like "48 Hrs 2" and "Speed 2" and a host of other
"2s" that were really just rehashes of the original films. Nice to see
a true sequel for a change.

Relating the two by blood, and then not *doing* anything with it, was
just sad.

Admittedly, I only caught the first 5 minutes at a friend's house, then
the last hour of the replay after getting home. And I could see spots
where it looked like they wanted to show that the Doug Dorsey character
was seeing the parallels from both sides and trying to get those crazy
kids together (and not let Alex Harrison throw away his life).

But watching the original before the sequel just reminded me why I liked
the first one and didn't like the sequel: I *like* Doug Dorsey and Kate
Mosely. I didn't like Jackie Moseley and Alex Harrison. Sympathetic
leads, people, not pathetic leads.

(Anyone know why Stepfanie Kramer isn't listed in IMDB's entry for the
movie?)

My question still remains--why D.B. Sweeney and Moira Kelly weren't the
parents?
Were they even approached? Or did they both smell "unnecessary sequel" and
avoid it like the plague?

Yes the original was much better but that was expected. The original was a
theatrical release and the sequel a made for TV rushie. They sure didn't go
out of their way to really show any really good skating with the pair imo. I
nearly laughed at the championship performances, they were so lame as shown.
But it was really about the love rather than the skating, wasn't it? At
least we now know that Kate and Doug did indeed get the Gold in France. And
yes they should have explicitly used Doug and Kate's romance in direct
dialog as guidance for Jackie's romance. Stepfanie Kramer and Patricia
Heaton could pass as sisters, couldn't they? I'd never noticed the
resemblance before now.

I would presume it was a cost issue. Sweeney and Kelly are bigger "names"
than Scott Thompson Baker and Stepfanie Kramer (even for us Hunter fans :)
and would have probably cost too much for a made-for-cable movie.
Heck, their contracts for the original might even have specified terms
for a sequel that would have been prohibitive.

I loved the movie, but found one problem: The movie has Jackie and Alex
competing at the recent 2006 Torino Winter Olympics. However, I
googled Winter Olympics figure skating and found no sign of either
Jackie or Alex. What is the ABC Family Channel doing, inventing
Olympic athletes out of thin air?

Can't ABC make movies about real Olympic athletes (such as "Miracle",
about the 1980 U.S. Olympic Ice Hockey Team winning the gold medal). I
suggest a movie about the Flying Tomato (Shawn White, IIRC).

Has a figure ice skater ever teamed up with an inline roller skater in
real life?

I havent seen CE2, but in the original, they compete in the Albertville
olympics against fictional Russians, so this is in the spirit of the
original.

Speaking of movies based on real olympic athletes, when are they going
to re-show the Tonya Harding movie with Heather Langenkamp as Nancy
Kerrigan?
