Kind of wonder how much Americans "get" when watching "Downton Abbey?"

Maybe they'd get, "She (Mary) looked like Juliette, awakening in the tomb." But would they get something like, "Was Napoleon overawed by the Bourbons?" A lot of the references must fly over their heads.

I, for one, am thankful that the landed gentry is a concept that we
never adapted from Merry Olde England. Still, Maggie Smith cracks me up.

I think very little flies over the heads of the Americans who choose to
watch Downton Abbey. However, the majority of Americans do not watch
shows like Downton and, no doubt, many of the references and multi
syllable words would indeed fly over their heads.
