Carrey and Kidman To Become Man and Wife?

The date between Nicole Kidman and Jim Carrey has been explained -
they were discussing plans to become husband and wife. The Hollywood
screen stars sparked much speculation of a romance when they were
spotted dining together at Nobu in Manhattan, New York. But the
meeting was purely professional - the pair are in talks to star
alongside each other in the movie version of classic '60s TV show
Bewitched. Writer-director Nora Ephron - who was also at the dinner
date - says, "Nicole has been circling the project long before I got
involved." While Kidman plans to take on Elizabeth Montgomery's role
as nose- twitching witch Samantha, Carrey is hoping to play the part
of her mortal husband Darrin in the film, which is scheduled to start
shooting in 2004.

I think Jim Carrey would be perfect as Darrin; much better than Mike Myers, who
was earlier rumored to be considered for the role. For the Endora role, how
about Angela Lansbury? She's probably considered too old for the part and
they'll likely go with somebody like Susan Sarandon as Endora.

Endora is a witch. She can look any age she wants.

As long as it is older than Nicole.

Sarandon is reasonable but her current political baggage may scare off
some people. Sigorney Weaver reminds me more of Agnes Morehead in the
way she carries herself and is better at comedy than Sarandon IMHO.

Barbara Eden did a totally kick-ass Endora take-off on Sabrina.

Carrey HAS to play the original York version! That would be a riot.
Anyone know what happened with that? The "Darren Switch"?
Everything is going along fine, we have York mugging for the camera
and all is right as rain - then one day, we get this stiff tight-assed
bitchy fem-Darren!

Not bad, but I always had the hots for Eden, 'specialy in that nifty
harem outfit! - Endora? ugh. Someone mentioned Sarandon in the role -
not bad. She's already bitter, booed and draws plenty of scorn. So
maybe!

[snip speculation a Bewitched movie will begin production in 2004]

This has been talked about for years. I just Googled a thread titled
"Julia Roberts in Bewitched?" that I started in the rec.* movie group
back in November 2000 when they were talking about Roberts in
the role. Both Kidman and Carrey were also being speculated on
in that thread.

Kidman and Carrey would channel Montgomery and York so well
it's spooky, and I think the time would be right for this movie. IF
(big IF) they can get the script and tone right (my views on that are
back in that old thread) this movie would be absolutely huge. It's
one of very few movies that I think could conceivably challenge
Titanic's record if they got it exactly right (including Kidman and
Carrey -- I agree they'd be ideal).

Dick York had a back injury that forced him to quit. It was bad enough
that he couldn't walk at one point. It took a long time to heal.

Check out <http://www.bewitched.net/filmfax.htm#bewit> for the
details. It is based on an interview with Dick York.

Or, to be true to the original series, Jim Carrey could play both
Darrens, switching half-way through the movie.

How about if they did a Darrin Switch ... IN THE MOVIE ?!?

They could start out with Carrey, then, without explanation, switch to
another actor at about the 45 minute point. How about Matthew
Broderick or David Hyde Pierce?

Ideally, this would be kept a secret until the release. The audience
would give a collective "What the ..." and then laugh because they get
it!

I always saw the two Darrens as looking relatively the same. I suppose
it doesn't help that both of the actor's first names were Dick. I can
tell them apart, but I can't picture the two at the moment.

They seem to be more a difference in attitude, rather than physical looks.
As I already said, Jim Carrey could the role halfway to emulate the changing
of the Darrens. To switch to a completely different actor, especially those
you suggest who strike me as looking quite different from Jim Carrey, might
be too much of a change.

Find someone who looks like Carrey, and it might be a different matter.
But, one assumes he is chosen for the role because of what he brings,
rather than because he looks like one of the Darrens. Is it possible
to find someone who both looks like him and brings something to the role?

Hmm. I believe that Bernard Fox (Doctor Bombay) is still with us
(though he doesn't seem to have any tv or movie credits since "The
Mummy" in 1999) but he wasn't really a regular character, was he?

Bernard Fox (Dr. Bombay), Kasey Rogers (Louise Tate #2), and Alice Ghostley
(Esmarelda) are still with us.

The show always had a high attrition rate. Besides the two Darrins, there were
two Gladys Kravitzes, two Louise Tates, and Darrin had two different fathers.
In addition to York's disability, the first Gladys (Alice Pearce) and Aunt
Clara (Marion Lorne) died during the run of the show.

I still think Bruce Campbell would be great. Gary Cole would be good
and it would continue his streak of sitcom remakes and films. Matthew
Broderick could be a reasonable choice for a Dick Sargent like
replacement Darren.

It keeps the film executives off the streets.

This is one that if done well could be worth watching. Most of these
TV retreads are not interesting enough to make me want to pay to see
them. Lost In Space was the last one I really wanted to see, too bad
It wasn't better.

Green Acres the Motion Picture- cast at will. Robert Picardo as Sam

Good plan.. but they'd never pay for a Jim Carrey.. and then
fail to utilize him as much as possible.

It might work if they waited until the last 10 minutes to make the switch?

It's funny. Throughout her career, Angela Lansbury has usually played
characters older than she was at the time she played them. She was playing
sultry Femmes Fatale when she was barely nineteen. She played Laurence
Harvey's domineering mother in "The Manchurian Candidate" when she was 36,
and Harvey was *almost* three years younger! She's 77 now, and *finally*
someone thinks she's *too* old for a role!
On the other hand, Susan Sarandon would be a perfect choice -- if they
wanted Endora to *seduce* Darren.
Not that it wouldn't make an entertaining picture!

I thought Lisa Kudrow had long ago been picked to play Samantha.

But I'll say it again: the only way to do this movie and make it remotely
interesting is to switch Darrens halfway through with no explanation.
