Death Train will be run again by USA, no doubt, so spoiler warnings:
(Does anyone know why Stewart's arm was in a cast? It didn't seem
to make much dramatic sense, so I wondered if it were real.)
Anyway, Stewart was okay, in a detached role with no real action required.
Brosnan was pretty damn good, even doing some of his own stunts ... it's
hard to fake a continuous shot as he climbs up into a flying helicopter
and then faces the camera. ;-) He even got dirty! Back in Remington
Steele whenever he got dirty it always seemed like makeup ....
Parts of the first 3rd or so dragged a bit, and it was hard to understand
how any rational terrorists would choose a TRAIN, of all things, to
transport a bomb, not to mention the existence of some kind of
"United Nations Anti-Crime Organization" that would have jurisdiction ...
but once it got going it was very nicely done. I thought the way
they took over the train again was dramatic and realistic at the same
time.
Anyeone else?

I thought this was pretty good for a TV movie too.
One of the terrorists/insiders also questions the use of a train -
he even said it would have been simplier to simply fly it out.
But I think the whole point was to get as much publicity as possible
to mobilize the Russian Army to innvade and so they get time by taking
a train.
Being a made-for-TV movie, I typically blow off all the plot flaws
but I was surprised at the end when the girl was trying to hop on the
plane but can't and, just as I started saying she should shoot the tires
or engine, what does she do - she shoots the engine - great! I thought
we were about to have to suffer through her hanging-onto-the-landing-gear-
and-the-added-weight-would-abort-the-take-off plot ploy.

Once again things are taken out of context. When I was answering
the debate about Classical music, I answered concerning the Classical
debate and its debate.
I am also a little pissed that you would infer that every person
who is not of Western cultural decent, or tries to think or live a
life style other than Western thinks Africa is the Mother of all homelands.
This insults the other cultures and societies on this glorious
organic spaceship we call Earth. You have just broken the argument in to
two camps, black and white. This is NOT true. My implication is that
many of the things Western Culture is associated with have origins or
influences outside it's own realm.
For example, the foods that we eat. Most italian dishes and the
dishes of the so called great chiefs of Paris and other European cities
are influenced by the cooking of Asiatic living. Most of the spices we
are accustomed to in high priced food was in use way before Western
culture came into contact with it.
There is also chocolate, gunpowder, etc. that is associated with
Western culture. Research the histories of these for yourself, but, you
sound pretty educated, at least in European and Western culture.
I am not saying that Western culture stole everything are that it
hasn't had some positive influences on the world. However, when we have a
show like startrek that professes to have an earth that has averted great
holocausts and has made progress, that we see nothing of other cultures
except White Anglo Saxon Protestant culture and ancestory.
True this is only a television show, but when it claims to have a
certain stance on race, culture, and society, then it better prove it in
its characters and their philosophies and lifestyles. I would love to see
Picard and Gunian get in to a heated debate about the validity of ancient
Chinese philosophy, or Egyptian, or Aztec, etc. I would love to hear
someone listening to Mandarin <sp? music.
Yet we see nothing from the crew, except a WASP culture. I'm
knocking Western Culture, but when we see a future where no one else seems
to exist but The west, then thats were I have the problem.
P.S. Nice, Touche >>>>>>gkatz...The Man...The Legend...The Caucasoid!
I think they will have a rerun on sunday night and another one later on
next week. I don't remember the details so check your TV listings.

I got bored very quickly w/ this movie. The characters were
stereotyped and the dialogue was the standard action movie type...
Quite a few cliches in there.. The plot itself didn't make much sense
to me either. All in all, nothing worth writing home about...

I didn't watch the second half. We had a rerun of "Sins of the
Father" at that time and "Death Train" was boring me to death
anyway... Looks like I missed the better half :-)

Well, since you missed the end credits you probably won't
be able to answer this one, but maybe some other person with
quick eyes can help me out.
I was watching to catch the end credits, but they scrolled
by so *incredibly* fast (at least around here) that I only
caught one name, and I want confirmation on it: I'm sure
I saw the name of Patrick's son Daniel Stewart listed.
Can anyone support this?

@ The more people I meet the better I like my dog. @
It has been my experience that this is infact the case.
Though perhaps I do not make a clear distinction between people
on the net and the general population. In all my past postings on
any controversial issue regarding sexism, racism, political correctness,
etc., when I say 'people who' or something like that, I always mean
the general population. I will try to be more clear in the future.

Of course Western culture is noth the be-all/end-all. However, it has
been my experience with people in general who cite the origins of Western
culture from non-western sources is to downgrade western culture.
They blame thw West for all of the world's ills, and anything they can
do to make the West look bad is good for them. Again, this has been
my experience, and thus, I do tend look down on individual opinions
that are similar in nature, even if not similar in intent.

I see your point in regards to Star Trek showing one Earth culture.
However, the show is not supposed to focus on Earth, but on alien
cultures. While some people are disappointed that alien civilizations
are also shown having just one culture, that is of a slightly different
issue. However, in regards to Earth culture, and not taking the real world
argument of being an American show because that's not relevant to the issue,
I don't see how various cultural customs can be shown on the Enterprise.
I mean, sure, during officer's off-hours and definitely the ship's civilians
would have their own various cultural customs, but we only see the ship when
it's on a mission of somesort, well, hypothetically on a mission of
exploration. Therefore, emphasis is rightfully put on the culture of the
alien of the week.
Now, in regards to the other 85% of the episodes where we have another
episode of the crewmember's personal life, while that fact alone is
already in a debate on r.a.s.c, we don't see any cultural customs,
except for Worf. We only see them falling in alove, again.
In my opinion, there is no culture on the Enterprise just lifesyles
of the bridge crew. There's nothing Western about it. The closest
that there is is Western philosophy, that being freedom, equal rights,
and so forth. (Whether the West actually lives up to that claim is
subject of constant debate, but the philosophy is there nonetheless.)
But you don't see Riker waving the American flag and eating hot dogs.
Granted, throughout anything canon or not about Star Trek that we
have knowledge of, very little is known about what Earth is like
except that all 20th century vices are gone and there's a sort of utopia.
However, while individual cultures may thrive on Earth, they generally
do not leave the planet. The drive that Europeans had to colonize the
Americas and Africa are not there for 24th century humans to colonize
Alpha Omicron VI. The Federation has the drive to seek out life and
so forth, but while there is some colonization, it's for a Federation
culture, not Earth.
Of course, there was that debate about how humans dominate the Federation,
but that s another story. :-)
