An Affair to Remember: Barbara Walters & Sen. Ed Brooke

By Amy Argetsinger and Roxanne Roberts
Friday, May 2, 2008; Page C03

So the press is in bed with politicians! Barbara Walters has revealed
that she had an affair with then-Sen. Ed Brooke in the 1970s.

Promoting her memoir, "Audition," the legendary television journalist
dished about her long-running relationship with the Massachusetts
Republican to Oprah Winfrey, according to a transcript of next week's
broadcast leaked to the Associated Press yesterday.

The two were both rising stars: The Boston-born Walters, then in her
40s and separated from her second husband, was making history as
"Today" co-host and then anchor of ABC News; the D.C.-born Brooke, a
decade older and estranged from first wife Remigia, had in 1966 become
the first African American popularly elected to the Senate.

Want more details? We obtained an early copy of the book. They met at
an N.Y.C. restaurant in '73 when she was in a busy dating phase. "Ed
Brooke was simply the most attractive, sexiest, funniest, charming,
and impossible man." How so? He used to joke that "I was the oldest
woman he had ever been attracted to." (She writes she was tempted to
respond, "Oh yeah? Well, you are the blackest man I have ever been
with.")

"I was excited, fascinated, intrigued and infatuated," Walters writes.
She badly wanted to marry him, and her ultimatum prodded him to seek a
divorce, she says. But friends warned the fraught ethical and racial
issues could ruin both their careers; they broke up before he lost his
1978 reelection bid. She went on to almost marry Alan Greenspan, but
that's another story. Also: Got serious with John Warner in the '90s,
but "I could never imagine myself as the wife of a senator living in
Washington." (What changed, Babs?)

Brooke, 88 and now remarried, did not respond to calls to his Florida
home for comment.

Barbara Walters reveals past affair with US senator
By FRAZIER MOORE – 14 hours ago

NEW YORK (AP) — After three decades of keeping mum, Barbara Walters is
disclosing a past affair with married U.S. Senator Edward Brooke, whom
she remembers as "exciting" and "brilliant."

Appearing on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" scheduled to air Tuesday,
Walters shares details of her relationship with Brooke that lasted
several years in the 1970s, according to a transcript of the show
provided to The Associated Press.

A moderate Republican from Massachusetts who took office in 1967,
Brooke was the first African-American to be popularly elected to the
Senate. Both he and Walters knew that public knowledge of their affair
could have ruined his career as well as hers, Walters says.

At the time, the twice-divorced Walters was a rising star in TV news
and co-host of NBC's "Today" show, but would soon jump to ABC News,
where she has enjoyed unrivaled success. Her affair with Brooke, which
never before came to light, had ended before he lost his bid for a
third term in 1978.

Brooke later divorced, and has since remarried. Calls to a listing for
Brooke in Miami by The Associated Press were not immediately returned
Thursday.

Walters is the guest of Oprah Winfrey to discuss her new memoir,
"Audition," which covers her long career in television, as well as her
off-camera life. On "Oprah," Walters recounts a phone call from a
friend who urged her to stop seeing Brooke.

"He said, 'This is going to come out. This is going to ruin your
career,'" then reminded her that Brooke was up for re-election a year
later. "'This is going to ruin him. You've got to break this off.'"

Winfrey asks Walters if she was in love.

"I was certainly — I don't know — I was certainly infatuated."

"Infatuated."

"I was certainly involved," Walters says. "He was exciting. He was
brilliant. It was exciting times in Washington."

Also during the program, Walters chokes up while describing the
struggles of her older sister Jackie, who was mentally retarded.
Walters confesses that, as a child, she sometimes felt embarrassed by
Jackie.

"She stuttered terribly. People made fun of her. People made fun of
me," Walters says. "I didn't bring friends home. I felt terribly
guilty because she was very loving and I didn't always feel that way."

Jackie Walters died in 1985 of ovarian cancer.

"When I think of her, because she was beautiful and loving and all of
that, it makes me cry."

Now, when the facts are made public, the only thing you rightwing

haha I love how wrong you got it. First, I'm not only liberal, but
what would be considered by the far-right as far-left. Second, both
were married at the time. Both separated, yes, but still married. And
back then it very well could have brought down both their careers.
You'd think Babs would at least have had the decency to wait 'til the
old goat was dead before digging up dust on this long buried secret.

Barbara Wawa may be been a major cause of Senator Brooke's marriage
problems. Brooke was a 2 term senator but was finally defeated. The two
causes of his defeat were: 1) Ted Kennedy actively campaigned against him;
and 2) there were reports that he (Sen. Brooke) cut some corners when trying
to get the money to finance his divorce.

Way to go, Ms. Wawa.

Interesting to note that Jerry Rivers had an affair with the wife of another
"moderate" GOP Senator.

Nice folks!

Barbara Walters had an affair with a black journalist, and your headline is

Exactly. This is the grand old dame's last hurrah. She knows she's
creeping towards the end of her life, so she's getting it all out in
her own words before it's too late. She can't wait for ALL the people
she's wronged over the years to die off, so since she's closer than
they are, they're collateral damage. I'm sure we'll have to wait for
her to die before we hear from her only-child daughter about what a
distance mother she was.

And, Mason, yeah, that was low class, but she's a prissy old hen
(think of that Looney Toons character).

And she's crying about not being taken seriously, when every year she
has a list of the most influencial people and none are scientists,
inventors just Hollywood performers and singers. I can see why the
old guard thought she fluffy! She might be the genesis of the problem
where American news is all about Hollywood and nothing else.

The "black cock" remark is still offensive, no matter how you define
yourself. Perhaps it's even more offensive coming from someone who
considers himself a liberal.

You stole that from Geraldo. It was freaking ignorant when he said it too.

I imagine she has better things to do than listen to some wannabe making
crude witless comments about her sex life.

What would you rather be doing? Having sex with a black person, or writing
drivel on the Usenet that 14 people read and 11 dislike?

That's true. I think more than 14 people have read this and I doubt
that very few actually dislike it.

I use to love being made love to by a Black man. Hot White/Black gay
sex is much more enjoyable doing than talking about on Usenet. :-)

Taylor is a homosexual; of course he'd see this from a phallocentric
perspective.

Sort of shows like liberals like you espouse the gay lifestyle, yet in
truth are just as disgusted by it than the rightards. So two faced...

Hey, that's what I'm here for.

It's kind of weird how this Hillary VS Obama thing is making all the
liberals on Usenet point fingers at each other and call each other
"right-wing". It's like reverse McCarthyism...

Well,

I was surprised to hear that news for sure. I have not liked, or
respected Barbara for many years.

I watched her interview the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan one
night, and she completely lost her cool.

She began yelling and screaming at him about how he hated Jews and he
said this and said that. Never in my life have I seen her lose control
of an interview like that.

Minister Farrakhan was his usual imperturbable self. He smiled and
never raised his voice as he explained what she thought he had said.

Then about fifteen minutes before the interview ended a special report
came on that President Nixon had died and they switched to report
that.

If any of you all can find a video of her interview with Minister
Farrakhan, please post it to you tube and let me know when you did it.

Barbara stinks!!

I can't find the transcript or video of Barbara interviewing Minister
Farrakhan. Maybe one of youn's can.

But you did after she took a black cock, huh? All of you white and black

Probablly because Farrakhan is a psychotic imbecile.
