There seems to be no crew connection to the HBO Show Oz yet every law and
order has several Oz cast members in their show.
TOS: JK Simmons
CI: Kathryn Erbe
SVU: Christopher Meloni, BD Wong,
T&J: Kirk Acevedo

This season alone SVU and Law and Order have had several Oz people guest
star, last weeks SVU had an irish murderer who was the same irish guy who
tried to blow up Oz, the episode with the Russian murdered was the same
russian killer from OZ,
Sean Duggan has been in SVU and CI as well as Oz (but been in nothing else),

Anthony Chisholm - Burr Redding
Robert Clohessy - Officer Sean Murphy
Stephen Gevedon - Scott Ross
Luis Guzman - Raoul Hernandez
George Morfogen - Bob Rebadow
Harold Perrineau Jr. - Augustus Hill
Blake Robbins - Dave Brass
Kristin Rohde - Claire Howell
Lee Tergesen - Tobias Beecher (Ironically has been in CI and TOS but not
SVU which stars his Oz nemisis Meloni)
Lauren Velez - Dr. Gloria Nathan
Dean Winters - Ryan O'Rielly
David Zayas - Enrique Morales
Zeljko Ivanek - Gov Devlin
Arika Bareikis - Trisha Ross
Otto Sanchez - Guerra

Are all regular regurring characters from Oz who have been in at least on4e
Law and ORder show (and most of them have been in at least 2) I haven't
included all the guest stars as that would take way too long but I'm
constantly recognising Law and Order guest stars from Oz such as Ryan's mum
and the guy who was Shebetta Oz.

I realise both shows are made in NEw York but there must be a bigger
connection than that....

I really don't think it is any bigger than that. I'm sure L&O & Oz
probably share a casting director, so the CD has an existing
relationship with these people.

Many of the people you mention (like Ryan's mom on Oz, Betty Buckley)
are veteran Broadway stars (who obviously know how to act for both Film
& Stage).

But it is a different skill set to deliver a performance to a camera
than it is to a theater. There is a limited pool of TV & Film trained
actors that reside in NYC (most actor's pursuing TV & Film move to
SoCal). This pool of actors has proven themselves charismatic and
professional in front of the camera, so local productions are going to
hire them. It saves time, money & hassle from flying talent in from the
west coast.

Agents to. I'm sure these actors have the most aggressive agents in
NYC, which ensure their clients get the best TV jobs available.

Not really. I suspect that if you look hard at any show that shoots
in the NYC area you'll find a lot of the same time of crossover.

For example, AMC's original series REMEMBER WENN also guest-starred
a lot of people from OZ and LAW & ORDER.

Or come to Canada, where there is a similar pool. Indeed, it's usually
easy to tell by watching what shows or movies are filmed here, because
the minor characters are familiar, trying their best to get work in
a field that can't support many home grown actors (and hence few have
a chance to rise above background characters).

We get a lot of those shows down here. I remember a bunch of detective
and science fiction shows, some filmed in Toronto, some in Vancouver,
with the same rotating set of minor characters. (One was pretty good,
about a newspaper. Probably about 1990.)

The Canadian accent, with pronunciations of "out" as "oat," and the
rainy, overcast weather, are dead giveaways.

(The forests of BC replace the deserts of Simi Valley and Antelope
Valley, for example, in science fiction shows. "Stargate SG-1" and "The
X-Files" are good examples.)

That's actually an Ontario accent so far as I can tell. People from
other provinces don't do that.

I hear it in the actors in the Vancouver-filmed series. Not as
pronounced as the Ontario accent, maybe, but very noticeable.

Top-posting, which I don't usually do, just to say that Tom Fontana & Dick
Wolf are good friends & often use the same actors.

I wouldn't say Kirk was, I thought he was excelent in Band of Brother and
Oz....he didn't have much to do in the Trial and Jury pilot so can't really
comment on that. I never Liked Meloni's character in Oz but thought he
played it really well.
