When did it occur that political party affiliation is no longer self
determined? I didn't get the memo.
While my state never had party registration under state law as many
other states do, I can declare my party affiliation because of primary
participation and that I've mentioned that years ago, I used to make a
poor living doing political work. I've also made campaign and party
contributions. When I was very young, I was an elected committeeman.
If BTR1701 isn't a registered party member, doesn't do political work
(not to mention that he's Hatched), doesn't make contributions, etc.,
he can say truthfully that he's just not a party member regardless of
whether Johnston defines "Republican Party membership" as someone who
hasn't voted for a Democratic candidate recently.
