For those who appreciated the brilliance that was SCTV, what were some
favorite skits, recurring characters and impersonations? Some I remember with
much fondness are:

-Sammy Maudlin, Bobby Bittman and Lola Heatherton
-Tex and Edna Boyle's Prarie Warehouse and Organ Emporium
-Mel's Rockpile
-SCTV News, with Earl and Floyd
-The Schmenge Brothers (particularly the polka version of Star Wars in tribute
to "Mr. John Villiams")
-the 1984 theme show
-Edith Prickly, Guy Cabellero and Johnny LaRue
-the Merv Griffith Show (juxtaposing Merv Griffin and Andy Griffith)
-John Candy as the guy "with the snake on his face"
-Monster Chiller Horror Theater (Dr. Tongue's 3-D House of Stewardesses)
-Farm Film Report ("that blowed up real good")
-and, Harold Ramis as the Beaver (actually, I only ever remember them saying
this)

This never did much for me.

True comic genius at work here.

"Ooooh, Otis is drunk. Oooooh."

The sadly underused Joe Flaherty as Count Floyd should have made TV
history instead of TV trivia.

But the funniest thing I have ever seen on television is, without a
doubt, the SCTV-redubbed episode of "The Cisco Kid." I thought I was
going to die.

Yeah, blowed her up real good.

Some of my favorite SCTV skits...

John Candy in Polynesian Town, with Dr. John as the musical guest.

In fact, the way SCTV worked the week's music guests into the skits
was pure genius.

Remember The Plasmatics in the Fishin' Musician?

Was it Carl Perkins as the guest when Candy is made to drive across
Canada, downing speed to keep awake, and then he finally goes nuts in
a bar?

Loved the Christmas show, the one where all Johnny LaRue wanted was a
"crane shot."

One of my all times favorites - Joe Flaherty as Quincy, Cartoon
Coroner. He did a better Jack Klugman than Klugman.

And the joke promos for upcoming shows. My favorite was the one
starring Abe Vigoda and Eric Estrada in "Fish N Chips."

One question.

While SCTV was running on Friday nights on NBC, a friend pointed out
that all the joke promos for other shows on SCTV always said, "coming
up on Thursday night at 9." Any reason for that time slot?

The one where the woman in yellow (I can't remember her name) goes to
jail, and tells the inmates never to assume, because then you make an ass
out of "u and me." And the inmates glare at her.

The she asks an inmate what he's in for, and he says "Manslaughter."
And SHe says "Oh, just a misplaced apostrophe! Then it becomes man's
laughter!"

This isn't exactly a skit, but rather a great line.

Catherine O'Hara plays a wife who has been caught cheating on her husband.
She tries to justify it by saying;

"But honey, all those men want is sex.....and that's all I give them."

I always loved the "Fishin' Musician" sketches with John Candy. One
week the guest star was Wendy O. Williams - I think they went hunting
for bargains.
And "The Five Neat Guys" singing "Mom pressed the crease in my Chinos"
is a classic.

But I do agree that the best was the Canadian/USSR sattelite mix up.
Remember everybody's favourite Cossack - Giorgy!
The song went:
Hey Giorgy!
He's coming to your town.
Hey Giorgy!
He never wears a frown.
Hey Giorgy!
He's happy as can be,
'cause all of Russia is Giorgy's family!

Hmm, this discussion is making me curious about SCTV.. I always thought
it was really stupid when I watched it (it was on after Friday night videos
right?).. Now that I'm older I wonder if my reaction would be any different.
It always seemed like a "low budget SNL that wasn't funny".. Wasn't
there some Dracula skit with the tall thin guy? (Note low budget isn't
an insult by itself, "Blake's 7" is just as good if not better than any of
the Star Treks, and I'm a big Trek fan.. and Blake's 7 has the cardboard set
quality of Dr. Who, something I "like in theory" but groan whenever I actually
watch it.)

I don't even know where to begin with this show! I loved it so much, and
I consider it one of the funniest things I've ever seen in my life. I
have all the Christmas episodes on tape, and I watch them every holiday
season. It just wouldn't be Christmas without the Schmenge's Leutonian
Christmas, or John Candy as "Divine" singing "Santa bring my baby back to
me" on the Dusty Towne Christmas special.

But I think my favorite episodes were the ones where they spoofed
Canadian and Soviet TV. Remember "3CP-1, Television Moscow", and "Uzbeks
drank my battery fluid!"? Or how about "Garth and Gord and Fiona and Alice"?

The record commercial spoofs were funny, too. Andrea Martin as "Connie
Franklin", "Gordon Lightfoot sings every single song ever written", and
"Perry Como: Still Alive!".

I believe you have to be a Canadian to appreciate it fully-Martin Short's
"Brock Linehan" bit always kills me. Remember the scene where he tries
to play basketball in front of 'Coach' John Candy? I hear Brian was a
good sport about it.

Brilliant!

I loved the Merv Griffen show that took off into space, with guest star
HAL 9000...

> -Monster Chiller Horror Theater (Dr. Tongue's 3-D House of Stewardesses)

SCTV often did one brilliant sketch and then used it again and again,
often not very well. MCHT was one of those, with the first one being the
best one. Still, the rest of them were at least fun.

The first one was brilliant conceptual art. Count Floyd introduces a
'rrreally scarrry' movie, which turns out to be Ingmar Bergman's
"Persona". A superb parody of the movie, too.

Others have mentioned The Cisco Kid voiceover, and other bits. I still
have fond memories of Canadian Corner, with Bob and Doug MacKenzie. Fun
stuff, eh?

They did a parody of "Marooned", about astronoughts trapped in orbit, that
was terrific, and stuck it to several movies all at once.

While I was never a big John Candy fan, he nearly got to my heart when he
played Tatoo on their 'Fantasy Island' parody.

Ed Grimly.

And so on. A great show.

This was brilliant ... especially the part where Candy/Pavarotti holds a
note so long because the orchestra conductor is sampling food and turns
dark red...

My Favorite ( and it came to mind a lot last year, with the theatrical
movie release)

***Jane Airhead***

This was both funny in itself and a great parody of lower-budget BBC
literary adaptations.

Joe Flaherty as Eddie Anderson as "Rochester" as "Mr. Rochester":

"Jane? Jane? Is that you, Jane?"

My favourite skit was the Count Floyd House of Horror where the movie was
the 3D House of Pancakes. Umpteen repeats later, I'll still laugh at
John Candy holding a bottle close to the camera and asking, "Would you
like some....syrup?"

Being Canadian, I'm also partial to Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas with
their hoseheads skits, drinking beer and frying back bacon.

I thought of a few more:

-"Indira," the Musical (a take off on "Evita," with Andrea Martin as
Indira Gandhi)
-Sid Dithers (just that name alone is funny)
-Andrea Martin as the pidgeon-English speaking cleaning lady; she seemed to
be in a lot of the behind the scenes at SCTV sketches (i.e., with Guy
Cabellero)
-Martin Short as Catherine Hepburn
-the Three Stooges impersonations; wasn't it Flaherty as Moe, Levy as
Larry and Candy as Curley?
-the Intellectual roundtable discussion show; a group of academic types
discussing the Flintstones

My high school buddy, Beth, and I loved Dave and Rick sooooo much that we
made snowmen that looked like them even before the big Great White North
thing was popular.

Personally, I think the skit that made me giggle the hardest was Tex and Edna
Boyle's (everything). Come on down.

That and Gary Todd and his "vudeo" show. I'm laughing about it now. The way
he'd put those tacky rainbow and fade effects on the screen ..and the singing
heads. The clips with Eugene Levy singing in the leisure suit.... everything.
Remind me of some more if you know it... I miss it.

Another simple favorite is Joe Flaherty doing Perry Como, lying on the stage.

-Just one of my all time favorite shows altogether. They'll never be another
one like it, because even though some of today's writers attempt that wacky
kind of free association, they don't, in my opinion, succeed, because they
always try to mix smarty-pants political statement into it. SCTV was just
weird fun, parody without all that... and that is why *I* liked it.
