New Zealand television contributes to the police procedural mystery genre.
Not great, but I liked the way the characters were portrayed, and
Fern Sutherland as Detective Kristin Sims was quite appealing.

Mike Shepherd, a senior police detective, inexplicable interferes in a
seemingly unspectacular death investigation in Brokenwood, a fictional
town that may or may not be near Auckland. He and Kristin have a
"meet cute", as Kristin's been dispatched to deal with a possible
pervert sitting in his car. He looks homeless, permanent two-day
growth of beard and a cheap business suit it looks like he slept in.

Yeah, the writers don't miss a lot of cliches.

Shepherd is sort of Columbo, but he drives what may have been a decent
stock car (if only it had a V-8) that's admired by a limited number of
auto enthusiests. Give the man a basset hound...

The murder is related to another homicide from 10 years earlier that
was never solved. Detective Gary considers it a failure.

Even though most of the murder investigation was telegraphed, I liked
the way it played out.

What I didn't care for was cliched lines, especially Shepherd's.

Seems Shepherd came to town because a woman, a witness in an old case,
is in hiding in a relocation program. Also, we meet one of his three
ex-wives, who may live nearby but wasn't explained.

Reviews said the dialogue improves; maybe I'll try another one.

He says that he has to take a demotion to be assigned to Brokenwood.
Maybe New Zealand has a nationwide police force like U.K.

I watched it on my local public television station. Its US distributor
is Acorn, same as Phryne Fisher's.

It's from 2014. I read that New Zealand television ordered a third series
for 2016.

The best bit were the Auckland/North Island accents. It's understandable
(unlike certain Australian accents) but pronunciations are very very
different. Great scenary and a charming small town, except for violence
that's significantly worse than Chicago shootings from gang conflicts.

Why didn't Spike Lee set Chiraq in the English countryside?

New Zealand made crap best avoided.

It's trying to be a New Zealand version of UK shows like Midsommer
Murders ... and fails miserably, as usual.

I liked where she tripped over her own feet, dropping her gun, and ends
up behind a different car, unarmed. :)

I wish it had English subtitles, I feel like I'm watching Tarzan in
Spanish.

Yeah, that was fun. I liked that the show avoided a lot of cop show cliches,
like all those miracle gun shots.

There is a Whitey character but he's entertaining, especially in the
second episode.

Where did you find these, or is it from your secret source that you
cannot divulge?

The Spanish dubbing is an improvement! I did get used to the NZ accents.
