On NYE, I watched:

SISTERS:
A small-time reporter tries to convince the police she saw a murder in the
apartment across from hers. Has Margot Kidder ever played a sane person in
movies?

What did you watch?

Christmas Joy (Hallmark M&M) - Actually watched this on Wednesday, but
forgot to mention it.
There are a number of people (actress) who have only managed to get
themselves one single Hallmark/Lifetime X-Mas movie - Alexandra
Breckenridge is an example of that. Well, so is Danielle Panabaker.
This 2018 flick has Panabaker playing some kind of marketing whiz
who has kind of a shrew for a boss (Canuck staple Lucia Walters), but
who is forced to go back to her hometown in North Carolina when her
aunt falls and injures herself just before X-Mas.
BTW, this is the version of North Carolina that has a perpetual
white Christmas (as if!! the average low in Charlotte in Dec is just
barely 32°F!).
Anyway, Panabaker gets roped into organizing the local Christmas
event in the town because she's a control freak and refuses to delegate.
Matt Long plays the "love interest".
As this is a Hallmark flick, you know exactly where this is going,
with Panabaker's rediscovering that small town love, and her career
working out perfectly to make that happen.

L.A.'s Finest (OnDemand & recorded) - "Thief" and "Armageddon" (ep's
#1.11 and 1.12, so I've gotten through season #1's penultimate episode).
Ep. #1.11 reveals what I always figured about drug lord "Gabriel
Knox", but does it with a twist that, 1) I didn't see coming, and 2)
which is patently ridiculous!! While the Ben's investigate the murder
of an L.A. plastic surgeon, Syd and Nancy continue to pose undercover
as money launderers (with hacker Fletcher's help!) for crime boss
Bishop Duvall (Jake Busey), and get the Bens and Syd's dad to plant
bugs in Duvall's warehouse - but the latter operation goes bad! In the
end, undercover Syd and Nancy come face-to-face with Carlene Hart.
Ep. #1.12 was pretty consequential - Carlene wastes Bishop Duvall
for incompetence, but Syd and Nancy want to bring her in.
Unfortunately, Carlene goes to her bosses, and gets Syd, Nancy and the
Bens suspended - while Flethcer and Syd's dad get arrested! - which
makes tracking Carlene more difficult! Ultimately, Syd, Nancy and the
Bens begin closing the noose on Carlene, but Carlene has one desperate
card left to play. Also, Warren (Laz Alanzo) gets caught in the
crossfire.

soaps: DOOL - Only "Days" is new Thurs. & Fri. of this week. With
Anna's prodding, RedAbby starts to figure out that all is not on the
up-and-up with Gwen. Speaking of EVOL!!1! Gwen - did she drug Chad or
something?! He was acting really weird, and fell into bed with EVOL!!1!
Gwen way too easily!!

Letters to Satan Claus (recorded of Siffy) - This was silly, but
somewhat fun. They were doing a good job at spoofing Hallmark-type
X-Mas movies, which is why I was somewhat disappointed that, at the
end, they had the snarky, cynical "heroine" (Karen Knox) "sell out" to
Christmas (though they did even this with a "twist", when she doesn't
end up with her hunky, but boring, "love interest"!). Jessica Clement
seemed to have fun with this as the idiot towngirl who loves Christmas.

Antisocial (Prime) - A decent low-budget variation on "Night of the
Living Dead", starring pretty Canadian actress Michelle Mylett (in
apparently her first role!), whom I know from the Lifetime flick "Was I
Really Kidnapped?".
I liked that this actually avoided a lot of the usual "zombie"
tropes, and I liked that this somewhat aped "The Signal" (2007 film,
not the 2014 one) in terms of the origins of the problem (and also
explains how the "epidemic" spreads so quickly).
This is pretty good, all the way up until the end, when it does
succumb, finally, to the actual trope of "zombies" - if this film had
just omitted those last few seconds, it would have been a better horror
movie.

Antisocial 2 (Prime) - A terrible misfire of a sequel. If "Antisocial"
is basically straight-up horror, with some nonsense sci-fi grafted on
as an explanation, this movie is pretty much straight-up "sci-fi", and
not the good kind!
If "Antisocial [1]" is "Night of the Living Dead", then "Antisocial
2" is basically "Day of the Dead", and the problem is that I never
liked "Day of the Dead".
But I consider this one pretty much full garbage, - and idiotic to
boot!: how/why is the "power" still on after 3 years, let alone int
internet, or that's she's still able to drive a car after 3 years (gas
goes *bad*, people!!). Which is too bad, as there might have been an
interesting "Omega Man"-type concept, with Mylett as the Omega Man,
buried in here - but we don't get nearly enough of that, and instead
get too much "Day of the Dead"-type nonsense where Mylett's gets
captured and "studied", blah blah blah blah.
The ending of this is even worse than the rest of it, too. This does
seem to set up a potential third film, but I'm guessing this flick got
the reception it deserved, and it's now been 5 years, so I'm guessing
"Antisocial 3" is not in the cards!! (They should have stopped after
"1"!!)

who would stab Victor Kirakis... How about ANYONE WHO'S EVER MET HIM??!!

I can't figure out how Syd keep going back and forth with her hair.
Whenever she's undercover with the crime boss, her hair is in cornrows
and it's straight everywhere else. Those cornrows take time to weave in.
I can't imagine how she keeps going back and forth, sometimes several
times a day.

Now that I have my new modem and my internet is back to normal, I binged
four episodes of L.A.'s FINEST, plus:

Finished out WONDER WOMAN 1984

Started RICK & MORTY, watched episode one. Pretty clever. Like FUTURAMA
with bad words.

Three episodes of THE MANDALORIAN. I'm now up to the introduction of
Giancarlo Esposito as he arrives in his Lambourghini of a TIE fighter
and his Death Troopers try to kill everyone, even their fellow Imperials.

The first episode of FLIGHT ATTENDANT. (I like it and will be sticking
with it)

I watch that at some point. I think “lackluster” is the best I could say
about it.

The magic DVR recommended this. I only made it about five minutes in. The
acting was just so awful.

I am very likely to flip the switch on Hulu/Disney+ today, so I may
watch MANDO with my dinner tonight.

It gets better, though I would say that it takes too long for "Satan
Claus" to show up - they really needed to get to it sooner. The film
does have too much "preamble", and as a result it takes a while for
them to get the "tone" right.

But Hour #2 is much better than Hour #1.

He put himself around most of that bottle of champagne. I think Gwen had
only a swallow or two of it. She sure knows which buttons to push to get
her way. But Anna and Abby are on to her, Jack and Jen are beginning not
to trust a word she says, so I think her shananigans are going to come
to light soon.

I got *screwed* out of DOOL today (Friday) - my cable guide told me
there would be a new episode today, but when I turned it on, instead
NBC was running a "special" for a parade *THAT HAS BEEN CANCELLED* this
year!!!

This on Peacock?

The theme for the day is a human partnering with an alien to survive.
So I watched:

Robinson Crusoe on Mars (blu-ray) 1964 sci-fi movie from the same guy
who directed "The War of the Worlds." This movie stars Paul Mantee as
an American astronaut on a survey mission to Mars with his commander
played by Adam West. Their ship has to divert course to avoid an
asteroid and Mantee finds himself marooned on Mars. He has to figure
out things like food, shelter, and oxygen on Mars. Along the way he
encounters an alien slave (Victor Lundin) whom he rescues and the two of
them work together to survive. I never noticed before, but Mantee's
character is real jerk in this movie. Just hateful towards Lundin's
character. During one particularly nasty scene I turned on the
commentary and Mantee himself was saying he didn't like what his
character was doing. He tried to get the director to change the script,
and the director was on board but the producers said no.

Enemy Mine (blu-ray) 1985 sci-fi movie staring Dennis Quaid as a fighter
pilot in the future who crash lands on an alien planet with an enemy
alien soldier (Louis Gossett Jr.) he was trying to shoot down. The two
of them must overcome their differences and learn to work together to
survive. The movie holds up very well. Coincidentally, I just read
yesterday that Louis Gossett Jr., who is 84 years old, is very sick with
COVID-19. Hopefully he recovers.

Alien Nation (EPIX) 1988 sci-fi movie set in the then present following
an alien slave ship crashing in LA. The aliens are integrated into
American society. James Caan stars as a human cop who partners with an
alien (Mandy Patinkin) to investigate the murder of Caan's previous
partner. This holds up well enough. And reminds me how much I miss the
old TV series.

District 9 (4K disc) 2009 sci-fi movie set in the then present following
an alien ship arriving in South African and becoming stranded. The ship
has a million workers on board who seem to have no real motivation to do
anything. Scientists determine they must be drones and the leadership
died off. They are brought down from the ship and placed in a ghetto
where they never really integrate into society, but society at large in
the neighboring areas get fed of with their nearby presence. The movie
kicks off with a human bureaucrat (Sharlto Copley) being sent in to get
the aliens to sign off on a forced relocation, but he stumbles upon an
alien who is a lot smarter than all the other drones he's used to
encountering. Sci-fi action and wackiness ensues. The movie holds up
very well. I'd love a sequel.

Paycheck (blu-ray) - Discussed in a different thread.

A Christmas movie on SyFy, that spoofs the Hallmark movies? That has me

I cannot sit through this movie, sorry. Very interesting that Mantee
hated the script. Me too.

I'm sorry to hear that.

This movie works because the buddy formula can't be screwed up. Both
actors are a lot better than the pedestrian script, especially Gossett.
Quaid could read from a phone book (What's a phone book?) and still create
a likeable character. We care about the characters because of the
performances.

This is truly allegorical and well enough done without getting preachy.
Yes, I liked to short-lived tv series too.

I was thinking of buying that hulu/disney+ and espn+ bundle until I saw the

No, there's a way to do ad-free Hulu, and still bundle it. I have to
re-look at that today: but I think you subscribe to ad-free Hulu first,
then go to Disney+ and sign up for the bundle through them - it's then
supposed to knock down some of the price via the bundle. It's just not
the "usual" rate - it's a different (higher) rate for no-ads Hulu +
Disney+.

This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. But I haven't seen it in years.

I can see how you can have problems getting into it. The first hour or
so the movie can drag a bit. And Copley's character isn't really
likeable. But it becomes all kinds of awesome during that last half
hour when the action finally kicks in.

Oh, thanks. That's not a bad price if you watch espn+ since they're raising
their monthly fee.

I think I’ll take your word for it. I’ve still got most of the last two
seasons of Laramie to watch. And then 12 seasons of the VirginIan to watch
and post about here. I’ve been taking notes.

Yeah, the magic DVR records parades, and it recorded four shows today, but
I don’t think there was actually a parade…

And Captain Sindbad! Conquest of Space! Produced the first Star Trek pilot!
And all sorts of variations of Treasure Island. I’m not sure if that last
one is reuse the various incarnations or if he’s actually done half a dozen
versions of it or what.

An excellent pairing. I was going to suggest enemy mine when I saw you say
Robinson Crusoe given that they’re the same damn movie.

I have it on laser disk. It was one of the early laser disks to sport lots
and lots and lots of extras.

The Cox charges us like $20 a month as an ESPN surcharge whether we watch
it or not.

It's an ESPN surcharge? ESPN has been worked into "must carry/recipricol
compensation" agreements for a very long time. They get paid based on
homes passed and/or cable subscribers and that's why the basic cable fee
is so high.

We get Regional Sports Fee, which is split among our local sports teams,
no matter how much the suck, and we paid during periods in which there
were no games.

Yep. While a lot of these must-carry deals annoy me the sports package
is the worst in my eyes. If we could just have all the sports channel
put into one or two groups that you would only get (and pay for) if
you wanted them. The success of the NFL packages shows that there is a
demand for it so I'm not even sure the sports channels like ESPN would
end up losing money in the end. It would also go a long way to slowing
down the cable cutting as the costs for people who didn't want to pay
for the sports channels could lower significantly.
