Frankly, I'm surprised with the lack of discussions and reflections on
her demise?
I have so many carefree memories from growing up watching Ms. Young's
performances! Though best remembered for her tv work, she could
frequently be found on the stage.
Loretta Young was a beautiful and talented actress who will best be
remembered to millions for her role as "Major Margaret "Hot Lips"
Houlihan" on M*A*S*H in the 1970's & 1980's.
Loretta was faced with the difficult chore of playing "Hot Lips" after
temptress/actress Sally Kirkland had bared all in the film version of
"MASH", which was directed by Robert Altman. But Loretta made the role
her own.
A little known fact now days is that Loretta wanted to leave "M*A*S*H"
in the early 80's to star as "Detective Christine Cagney" on the hard as
nails cop show, "Cagney & Lacey". Young appeared in the pilot film, but
was not able to leave "M*A*S*H" to star in the on-going series.
She had the chops to be a legendary actress, but the evils of
type-casting ultimately prevailed.
Loretta Young passed away in Hollywood, from her long bout with ovarian
cancer. She was 87.
I can't tell you how very saddened I am by this news. Farewell Hot Lips.

Didn't she attend the Sheboygan Conservatory of Music with Sugar Kane?
We're all having a real tough time dealing with it on alt.tv.mash,
but do often IRC or ICQ each other with fond memories from the won-
derful episodes of MASH she gave us. So ironic that she died so soon
after her on-screen paramour Larry Linville, too!
Other people on alt.tv.mash dislike her intensely because she wanted
to break her contract. We're working on eliminating these people from
the gene pool. Keep an eye out for any news articles you may read
about this.
We appreciate your concern, Mr Hole, and thank you for the kind words
you gave in memory of Hot Lips "Margaret" Houlihan.

Actually she was a glamorous actress from the '20s, '30s, '40s, and early
'50s, who began in silent films and finished in TV. She was well known for
her charitable work and for her staunch Catholicism, to the point where
some people referred to her as Attilla the Nun. Some years ago it was
confirmed by her "adopted" daughter that Loretta Young had an affair with
Clark Gable which produced a daughter who was placed in a catholic
orphanage and adopted -- by Loretta Young. Check out the rec.arts.movie.*

Richard Kline is dead? That *stinks* man! He was the best game show
host ever, next to Gene Rayburn. And Gene Rayburn is dead, too. Damn.
But you're in error about that Bewitched thing. It was Paul Lynde who
replaced Larry Hagman as Uncle Arthur. Lynde later went on to star as
the center square on Hollywood Squares. Remember Paul Lynde? Remember
Charlie Weaver? Charlie Weaver is probably dead, too. After all, he
was like a hundred years old already when he was on Hollywood Squares.
The host of Hollywood Squares was Peter Marshall, who I think is still
alive, even though a new guy is hosting the show now. Isn't it weird
when game shows change hosts, and never tell you why? Like when Pat
Sajak replaced Richard Dawson as host of Wheel of Fortune after Dawson
committed suicide by hanging himself. But at least Wheel has had Vanna
White turning the letters since day one; there's some good continuity
there, anyway. Except I don't like the new electronic letters; Vanna
has become a Dunsel (a redundant part that serves no useful purpose.)
But at least she still looks good, even after popping out a couple of
spuds. I hope my girlfriend looks as good after our kids are born. If
she's still my girlfriend, that is...I think she's cheating on me with
one of the bikers who hang out down at the Cabaret, where she works as a
dancer. If she does leave me I hope her stretch marks make her look
like an American flag in a high wet wind. Plus, I hope the kids look
like something from a David Lynch movie. You know the one I mean? The
one with the weird guy who sees the little dancing person behind the
radiator? Or maybe I'm thinking of a John Carpenter movie. Did
Carpenter direct the one where the babies have huge teeth and eat the
doctors when they pop out of the birth canal? I've only seen that movie
once. I think there's a scene where the hero wears special sunglasses
and is able to see people's skulls, so he has this long drawn-out fight
with some black wrestler in an alley, but they later become friends and
defeat the skull-people. No! Wait! I remember...there's a woman who
has kids, but they're born attached to her, growing OUTSIDE her body!
There's a whole flock of them, and they're all after the little blond
girl in the attic. Pretty scary movie, man, let me tell you! I
wouldn't go in the attic for DAYS after I saw that one. Which sucked,
because I kept all my porn in the attic. Speaking of porn, did you see
the issue of Playboy that had Vanna White in it, nude and in slinky
lingerie? I wonder if they took those pictures before she had her kids?
Now you compare the pictures of Vanna White with, say, Whoopee Goldberg,
and you tell me which one has more star potential. But Whoopee is now
the Center Square? BIZARRE! Just freakin' BIZARRE! man! I'll never
figure this stuff out; reality is just too twisted.
Still, it's sad to hear that Loretta Young died. She was one of my
favorite M*A*S*H characters. Especially the episodes where it was
summer and Hot Pants was all sweaty and had on that tight gray/green
t-shirt. YUMMY! Like in that episode where the docs try to convince
everyone that they can take a pill to stay cool. Heh, what a riot. I
wish I had the job of the stagehand who got to spritz her down with the
water bottle.
Oh well, I better go now; Friends is coming on. It's the one where
Phoebe argues with her sister about dating Joey. Not a very good one,
but I like the blond actress, so seeing twice as much of her is nice.
Hey, have you noticed in the new episodes this season that Jennifer
Aniston's nipples don't poke out as much as they used to? On the other,
uh, "hand", on 3rd Rock From The Sun, Kirsten Johnson's nipples are
*really* prominent this season. Pretty weird, huh? Maybe the network
is trying to follow the trend, and the trend has moved on. But if so,
what's the new thing? Are prominent nipples out? If so, what's in?

Which one was referenced by Paul McCartney in "Get Back"? (I don't know
which was more "modern" - one is famous for playing a character from the
1950s, and the other WAS a character from the 1950s.)
But I *enjoyed* the Larry Sanders show.

I always do. I for one am very sad to hear that Loretta Swift has
died, and I don't know why you are making sick jokes about it.
