MTV showed an updated version of their top 100 videos this weekend. The top
15 were:

15) Addicted to Love (Robert Palmer)
14) Beat It (Michael Jackson)
13) Born in the USA (Bruce Springstein)
12) I Want Your Sex (George Michael)
11) I Need You Tonight/Mediate (INXS)
10) Opposites Attract (Paula Abdul)
9) Sweet Child O' Mine (Guns and Roses)
8) Legs (ZZ Top)
7) Wanted Dead or Alive (Bon Jovi)
6) U Can't Touch This (MC Hammer)
5) Pour Some Sugar on Me (Def Leppard)
4) Money For Nothing (Dire Straits)
3) Sledgehammer (Peter Gabriel)
2) Thriller (Michael Jackson)
1) Vogue (Madonna)

Probably the most surprising/rediculous/retarded :] picks were:

* I want your sex: Put here to help GM sell his new album, no doubt.
* Opposites Attract: Big deal, a Roger RRabbit rip-off.
* U Can't Touch This: Rap fans, is this REALLY the greatest rap of all times?
Even the greatest rap video??
* Thriller upset: I thought MTV sold its soul to MJ *LONG* ago. What went
wrong?
* Vogue: This was a retarded choice for the number one video of all times
from a logical standpoint... (I know, it's only MTV, but bear with me) First
of all, Madonna's newest video was NOT even the best video of 1990, according
to the same people who made Vogue best of all times; Also, on their last
"Best 100 of all times", they made Vogue #3; this was about a month ago. Has
Vogue gotten better while we weren't looking?? I guess we can chalk it up to
a peace offering to Madonna for VOGUE's rejection as Video of the Year 1990.
By the way, Sinead O'Connor's video was NOT to be seen in the top 15.

Talk about videos that should have been near the top...what about
Duran Duran's "The Reflex"? As far as fan requests go, it was the
Friday Night Video Fight (remember that?) all-time champion, and that's
over a period of three (I think) years. I don't think it has been on
the top 100 of all time since 1985 or '86.

UGGHH!! One of the most sexist, ucky videos ever made.
The song's not bad, though.

> 12) I Want Your Sex (George Michael)
Faith, or the duet he did with Aretha Franklin (ouch, the name
escapes me just now) were MUCH better.

> 10) Opposites Attract (Paula Abdul)
1/2 ugghh. Straight-Up and Forever Your Girl were both MUCH better.
> 8) Legs (ZZ Top)
Yes, it's sexist, but it's always been one of my favorite videos.

> 6) U Can't Touch This (MC Hammer)

These songs are both TOO NEW to even be considered.
I don't think Vogue has real legs.

> * U Can't Touch This: Rap fans, is this REALLY the greatest rap of all times?

If the award is for video (aside from the fact it's only a
few months old), then, yes, it's probably the best
rap video I've ever seen. As a song, though, it's
not much.

> * Thriller upset: I thought MTV sold its soul to MJ *LONG* ago. What went

Hell, second best isn't THAT bad.

I wonder why there weren't any videos by Janet Jackson in the
top fifteen?

From what I heard on the radio(whatever that's worth), he got
permission from Rick James and Rick is getting royalities.
What's wierd is if the radio station will play one song
right after the other one. Has happened only once to me.

It's not a rip-off of Der Kommisar (by Falco). It's actually a sampling of Rick James' "Super Freak".

I wonder if he is getting royalties on it though ...

That song was the BEST! Whenever I saw it it gave me goose bumps, for some
strange reason. It didn't even make the top 100??? MTV must have something
up their sleeves. I don't think they should be sacrificing real talent just
to boost someone's sales. Maybe VH1 should do their own Top 100, if they
haven't already. Of course, they're owned my MTV Networks anyway - what can
you do?

But what about the VIDEO? You know, the visual part? To be best video in
my mind, you have to have a great audio and video.

eMpTyV takes what is popular at the moment, and pushes it as the all-time
best; they've been doing it for the last five years.

Well, when Duran Duran releases a slew of videos promoting their new CD,
I'm sure one of them will find it's way on the year-end countdown of the
all-time great videos.

Rick is mentioned (and probably paid) as co-producer.
Falco, being a kind of rip off-artist, was also "inspired" by Rick.

WRQX in Washington DC has spliced the two songs together (a bit of
U Can't Touch This, then a bit of Superfreak, then back to UCTT, etc.)
It's REALLY annoying.

I seem to recall hearing on the radio that one of the characters in this
particular video was a man (other than Mr. Palmer of course). It was
also mentioned that it was done to curb some of the sexist remarks that
would be made. Anyway know if this is true ? I don't think it was
ever published which one was a guy in drag.

Nice cynicism. I like your style.

Well, it was cute, once or twice...

It's not even rap music, as far as I can tell. He just sort of
blathers randomly over R&B tracks. Where's the kickass jackhammer
beat? Where's the SOCIAL MESSAGE? Even Tone Loc is better, and I
*hate* Tone Loc. (Well, did you expect something USEFUL like "Fight

Yeah, it's completely illogical. The movie it was hyping has come and
gone (and not done anywhere near as anyone involved thought it would).
The album has probably run out of steam too - maybe Madonna's
marketing division decided it needed a kick in the ass and paid off
MTV to put "Vogue" at the top. ("c'mon, what do you need Michael
Jackson up there for? EVERYBODY on the PLANET already has a copy of
THRILLER... give madonna her chance at TOTAL MEDIA PENETRATION...
again... please...?")

I seem to remember they used some real musicians for the close-ups
of the hands actually playing the instruments. This make the sexism
even stronger, because it means they choose the girls ONLY for
their looks, not even for their ability to pretend to be playing
an instrument.
Another rumour, the enlish musician union did not approve of using
this kind of models pretending to play the music. This because it
deprived some real musicians of pretending to play the music in
the clip. So, while filming, the director had to make it obvious
the models were not real musicians and could get away with it
calling it a spoof.

I don't quite understand. Maybe I'm missing the implied smileys, but neither
a "kickass jackhammer beat" nor a "SOCIAL MESSAGE" are necessary components of
rap. The only requirement for rap as far as I can tell is that it contain
rythmically spoken [as opposed to sung] lyrics over a somewhat musical base.

U Can't Touch This sounds like rap to me. Check out Ice-T's "Hit The Deck" for
another take on the same basic rapid-fire vocal style.

Does anyone know what the new time slot is for L.A. Law?
Have they started the new season premiere yet?
If not, when will it be?

NBC has not changed LA Law's time slot. The season premiere will be on
Thursday, Oct 25 in its old time slot of 10pm. (Source: USA Today Life
section - Sept 12).
NBC is using this time to show off Law & Order to LA Law's audience.
Law & Order is scheduled to move to Tuesdays at 10pm sometime later (I
assume when LA Law returns in Oct.). IMHO, Law & Order is a pretty
decent show. It gives us a chance to see how a crime is handled from
occurrence through its final disposition. If you have not see Law &
Order, give it a look.
