It's similar to Akinator. You think of a movie, answer some questions
and see if the algorithm can guess the movie title.

Well I stumped it with Blake Edward's SUNSET, which it turns out it didn't
have in it's database at all. So I added it and some questions; it says it
will get it next time.

I stumped it on the first try with Silent Movie (1976).
Seems to me the questions were off.

I tried it with Dark Star. It got it, but took 34 questions to figure
it out.

There were several questions that would need a "partially" button as
the answer, like "Is the movie about an alien".

I was able to stump it with "YellowBrickRoad" (which apparently was in
its datebase). I thought about also trying "Chemical Peel", but if
"YellowBrickRoad" stumped it, I'm quite sure "Chemical Peel" would...

Maybe I'll try "What Keeps You Alive" or "It Stains the Sands Red"...
OK, "What Keeps You Alive" wasn't in there - I added that one, and
three questions.

It accurately guessed the animated, "Transformers: The movie" in 16
tries. I'm a little surprised that's even in it's database. I haven't
thought of another one yet. I'm leaning towards something even more
obscure, but I don't want to waste my time on something not in it's
database.

Hmm. I wonder how it does at differentiating BATMAN movies. I'm thinking of
BATMAN 1966
Advanced gadgets? Yes
Fictitious world? Aren't they all?
Uncommon or fictional beings? Duh
Criminal activity? Hell yes
Are there any children? Hmm. Going for 'not sure'
Is the main character the owner of a big corporation? Yikes. Is the Wayne
Foundation a corporation?
OMG
I thought it had me, asking about bad guys and action, and then it guessed
THE CORE
WTaF?
Continue!
Are crimes prevented? Hmm. Solved, avenged ... oh, the dolphin keeps Batman
from being killed. Yes.
HIGH ANXIETY
What!?!?!?!? NO!
Does the hero start out as an underdog? NO
And .. it gave up. WTF?
Well, it has Batman: The Movie in it's database. It just was still stumped.
"Add three questions"
Is there any gratuitous wall climbing?
Do any dolphins sacrifice themselves?
Are there some days you can't just get rid of a bomb?

Impressively, it got "Home Alone" pretty quickly.

I'm going to try something older now...

OK, I stumped it with "The Snake Pit" because it wasn't in the database
- somewhat impressively, it came up with "Girl, Interrupted" (which is
close!), even though I told it the film was "black & white"?

It took 34 for Star Trek the Motion Picture (no other guesses) but I had to
answer a lot of them 'not sure'
About 12 in it asked if there were any scenes of Galactic Travel and I was
sure it had me, but then it went off the rails asking about children and

I think it took 42 questions to figure out "Goldfinger," guessing "Skyfall" first, which was odd because I told it the film had NOT been produced in the 21 Century.

Yes, it defintely makes mistakes - it has asked me multiple times if a
movie was black & white (it should only need to ask that once!). And it
asked a friend of mine if Tarantino directed the film when he had
already told it that it was directed by Spielberg.

Clearly, the system still has some bugs...

But it amused me when it was trying to get it to figure out "Lord of
the Rings" for me that it aske "Does Sean Bean die in this film?" Heh!

I wonder if there's a separate "Was Kevin Bacon in the film?" question!

I've stumped it *twice* now on "Stir of Echoes", because at the end it

You can't suggest new questions. You are supposed to select three
existing questions where the answer is "Yes" for the film.

I've generally done that... But I think the first time I got to put in
the three questions, at least one of the ones I entered was "new". I
dunno if the system will accept new questions like that or not...

(They certainly need to fix some of the current questions, like "Is it

It dared me to try SUNSET again, assuring me it would get it with the help of
my shiny new questions.
Right now it's guessing Escape from Alcatraz ...
After asking if Julianne Moore was in it, it guessed The Way Back
It asked one more question - is it an adventure movie - and gave up.
But it says SUNSET is now in the database!

So I try Hudson Hawk
after 50 questions it makes it's first guess: The Princess Bride
It asks one more question - is there a wedding in the film - and gives up.
Hudson Hawk *is* in the database, so I don't get to add questions.

So I'll try the 1951 The Thing
Is the main character a woman? Damn, that's a tough one - she is top billed.
And it guesses The Abyss. Huh. Those two *do* have a lot in common, don't
they ...
After asking if Laura Dern is in it (huh?) it guesses Predator
It asks - again - if it is an adventure film and if it has any aliens in it
and guesses Buckaroo Bonzai
It asks one more question - was it produced in the 20th Century - and gives
up
it suggests it might have been
Rocky Horror
War of the Worlds (the bad remake)
The Time Machine (the bad remake)
Critters
King Kong (the 21st Century version)
Sphere
Deep Blue Sea
The Thing! But the 1982 version
Killer Klowns
Tremors
nope to all
The Thing is in it's database

Okay, HATARI!
After 46 very odd questions it guesses That Thing You Do! (well, it got the
exclamation part right)
It's next question is are there animals in it ... I'm thinking it's got me,
but no
It guesses Office Space. Does that really have a lot of animals in it?
It gives up. Hatari! was in it's database.

Twelve O'Clock High
It guesses Saving Private Ryan. Harumph.
It starts asking the same questions over and over and guesses The Green
Berets
It gives up. Twelve O'Clock High *was* in it's database

Okay, Jurassic Park. That ought to be big enough for it:
Wow. After asking if Harrison Ford was in it, it guessed correctly at
question 17.

Looks like it wants big films. Okay, Star Wars
Wow, on question 4 it asks "was it released in 1977" - it obviously has me. I
say 'yes' and it asks if it's the second film of a trilogy. Gah!
Then after asking "is it crime" it guesses Star Wars on question 15.

Camelot
Several times I'm sure it's got it, but then it goes off on tangents. It
makes it's first guess at question 50: Remains of the Day (is that a
musical?)
It guesses Excalibur (so close!)
It gives up
Camelot is *not* in it's database.
I submit it, and it asks me to add 3 questions
It doesn't know who Richard Harris is

it's been like 17 years.

I keep meaning to rewatch this (I'm assuming you mean from Outer Space).

Seeing this, I decided to see if it could guess Three O'Clock High. I'm
impressed that it was able to in 26 guesses. It never even asked if the
movie took place in a school.

Well, for a century-and-a-quarter, *nobody* has attempted H.G. Well's
compelling coda to his time-travels:

"I cannot convey the sense of abominable desolation that hung over
the world. The red eastern sky, the northward blackness, the salt Dead
Sea, the stony beach crawling with these foul, slow-stirring monsters,
the uniform poisonous-looking green of the lichenous plants, the thin
air that hurts one's lungs: all contributed to an appalling effect..."

I will say that the game associates the wrong posters with the films. For
instance, for Zorro, it's really got the 1920 version in it's database, but
the poster is for the 1940 version. They have the poster for the bad remake
of The Time Machine, but who knows what movie they actually have. Maybe the
even worse one with Priscilla Barnes.

Hmmm. I wonder what it would make of TO SIR WITH LOVE
Good God. It started out assuming a horror movie, and all it's guesses
reflect that, and I'm clicking 'no' to every question
And it guessed Hoosiers
It asked if the main character was black
then it asked if he dies
then it asked if it was played by Samuel L. Jackson
then it guessed Good Will Hunting
it asked if it was about winter sports and gave up
and ... To Sir With Love is in it's database, but it asked me to add three
questions anyway.

Well given Bean has died in Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones and
Sharpe's Waterloo it's not really so amazing the question gets asked.

He's almost becoming typecast with death scenes (though to be fair
Waterloo is at the very tail end of a series while the other two were
quite early on)

I think it's great how these guys figured out how to have users build
them a movie database for free.

I tried "Quest for Love" because I thought an obscure film would
challenge it. I didn't know "The Sound of Music" would challenge it.

Actually, it got "The Sound of Music" pretty quickly, which surprised
me because it never asked if the film was a musical... In fact, I don't
think I've ever gotten "Is ths film a musical?" question...

On the other hand, it's choked *hard core* on "An American in Paris",
which should be easy to solve if it just asked the right questions...
:/

Yeah, I keep thinking 'maybe they only picked 5 star movies to start' and
then I think 'maybe they only picked 5 star movies in the last 20 years to
start' ...

The iPhone app version seems to be much smarter than the browser version.

It didn't have The Sign of the Cross (1932) or The Sterile Cuckoo (1969).
It's guesses always seemed to be 80s or later.

It didn't have Getting Straight (1970).

It guessed Apocalypse Now

42 guesses for The Sound of Music though I don't understand why #40
and #41 were 'is the main character a woman?' followed by 'is the main
character a man' (having previously established the main character was
not a child)

No "Sterile Cuckoo?" That's a GREAT movie!
