I was watching the early episodes of China Beach on LifeTime, and
one character I liked a lot was Cherry. I was disappointed that
they killed her off. Is there a story behind this? Did they
not like her? Did she not want to work any more?

Thanks

It was a show about a war and people die in wars. That is the
explanation that I read. It also explains other character's departures
such as Wayloo Marie's and the red headed soldier's (sorry I can't
remember his name).

I remember being very upset when they killed off Cherry. I didn't think
that htey'd do it. My logic was that she was a major character and TV
shows never kill of major characters. Well, I was wrong. And even
though I missed Cherry on the show, I think that this way of handling
characters was one of the things that made the show great.

How did Wayloo die? Or rather, to be more specific, what were the
circumstances of her death? (Hopefully you'll give the basic plot of the
whole episode). All I remember is when she got shot in the butt and the
doctor (Robert Roberts?) loved it.

That same logic is a big part of why I really really like the
British sci-fi show "Blake's 7". It happens a bunch of times, and the
end is a doozy. {No that doesn't give away as much as it seems it does}
(I think the show in general is as good/better than Star Trek:TNG and I'm a
great fan of TNG!)

Wayloo _departed_. She got a network job stateside. I don't think they
pulled the Henry Blake ending there.

Right, Wayloo Marie didn't die. If I remember correctly,
she showed up in the series finale.

I've never read anything that suggested that there were any "problems"
between Nan Woods and the production company. I think they were just
bringing a sense of realism to the show by showing that even the "good
people" got killed in Vietnam.

They did have a closing card that mentioned that 3 (or was it 4) Red
Cross volunteers were killed in Vietnam. I think Cherry's death was done
as something of a tribute to them.

I don't think Wayloo died. I thought she showed up at the reunion at the
series finale. Well, Lifetime is airing that episode on Monday night, so
I guess I will watch and see if my memory is defective or not (it probably
is).

Speaking about Nan Woods, has she been in anything else?

Nancy put it rather ambiguously. She said Wayloo Marie "departed", and
that's correct. At the end of the second season (the only season featuring
W.M.), in the episode titled "The World, Part I", Wayloo left Nam and the
Air Force for a broadcasting job in New York. She flew back Stateside
with McMurphy, who was going back home on emergency leave after her
father had a heart attack.

Yes, she flew home on the same flight that MacMurphy was on when she went
home to see her sick (eventually dead) father.

Nan Woods retired from acting after this episode. There are no more
acting credits since her role in the show was killed off. I wonder if any
of the cast members know where she is and if they invited her to attend
the 25th anniversary back in 2013 (when the DVD was released)
