Well, the Late Winter 1989 ANGLOFILE (vol 2, no 5) says:
Louise Jameson (DOCTOR WHO) left BERGERAC in the first episode of the
new series, when her character of Susan Young, Bergerac's girlfriend,
was killed off. Susan Wooldridge (THE JEWEL IN THE CROWN) guested in
one of the new episodes of John Nettles' eighth series as the Jersey
cop. At the end of the current series, Bergerac turns in his badge and
follows a new love to the south of France; next season, he'll be based
in France as a private detective, though a Christmas special might be
shot in Jersey.
He falls in love again, and quits his job and moves to another country to follow
the new object of his affections, all only a few months after his girlfriend of
*EIGHT WHOLE YEARS* is killed? Fickle man!

O.K. I stand corrected. I couldn't quite see the BBC being prepared to
spend the money on a lot of foreign locations, though having thought
about the international sales I reckon they could get their money back
easily enough. Interesting that this info seemed to be readily available
in the UK, but not so over here.

I hadn't realised that she lasted 8 years. There was definitely a woman
involved in the first few series (one or two), played by Cecile Paoli,
if memory serves me correctly. How long has Bergerac been running
anyway?

Ech! I liked the cast of characters they had on Jersey. I guess this
means that they're all sacked until the special. Who is this new love
he follows? Is Chris Boucher (said in vain by a Blake's 7 fan) still
the script editor?

I know from watching the show that Louise Jameson was not on the show
for eight years. In fact, I think I only saw her first season (at least,
I think it was her first season). The season ended with the killing of
an "arms dealer" (it's been a while, I know that an "arms dealer" was in
the episode and that the goings on were a set up to murder someone.)
and Bergerac being threatened to keep quiet or else his daughter would suffer.
I've been curous ever since about how this was resolved.
Anyway, how did the writers handle his leaving Jersey for France? I just can't
see him leaving Jersey and his job to follow someone he loves. Of course,
how his girlfriend was killed could change things.

Louise was on for four years. Originally, Nettles was supposed to
change girlfriends every year or so, but the BBC decided to give
him some stability (fear of AIDS) and Louise was luckily in the part
at the right time.
It was her decision to leave.
