Can anyone remember what the name of the actor was who played the man
in the pyjamas sneaking downstairs for a glass of R. Whites singing...
"I'm a secret lemonade drinker, R.White, R. White,
I'm trying to give it up, but it's one of those nights...
We're after the name of the actor in the original 1970s ads not the
more recent ones. Any help would be much appreciated and may well
avoid bloodshed in our long-running office argument.
Please e-mail me the answer if possible as I don't get a chance to
check out the newsgroups that often. My address is:
Thanks in advance...

Well, he looks a bit like John Otway (who had a hit in the late 70s
with "Really Free", who once told Paula Yates when she turned him down
that she'd never go out with a rock star, and who "sings" the lyrics
to one of the new weetabix ads). Its the sort of mad thing he'd do.

I know his face, but not his name...
(which must *really* help you a lot!)
I remember him creeping down the stairs to get his lemonade fix..
----------
Also....at the same time (late 70s) - I remember the advert for
"Sutherlands" pate paste - the theme tune of which went (something
like) - "Sutherlands, Sutherlands, scrumptious Sutherlands...
Sutherlands, Sutherlands...[stuff deleted] Sutherlands Spread..."
..and I have a vague recollection that the actor (or at least
his taste buds) sang the above song...!!

Unfortunately it's not Otway. Though he did appear in a few ads. I
don't remember what for but he was in a tent and was so intent (ha!)
on eating something that he didn't notice the tent sliding over a
cliff...or something like that.

Um, probably a bit late to tell you all this - the Guy in the ad was
Ross MacManus........not sure whether he's any relative or not.......well,
daft really - I'm sure he's *somebodys* relative.........just not sure
whether he's a relative of Elvis Costello.......probably....

Amazing coincidence (or *is* it). Frank Skinner's TV show on BBC1
just had Ross MacManus on, after playing a bit of the ad. He is
Elvis C's dad just to confirm (well known fact actually). Also
our Declan sings on the ad as well.
Hang on, this is a bit of a coincidence? A usenet posting gets
answered by topical TV programme? What's going on?
Perhaps we could put this to some use...?

Yes, and he was on the Beeb last night!

How many people do *you* know with a C function named after them ?
He was on the Frank Skinner show on Sunday (last night).
What a coincidence! Can't remember his name but he
is the father of Elvis Costello!

On Frank Skinner's show on Sunday, it was revealed that the
actor in question is Elvis's dad. BTW, did anybody else notice how much
Frank seemed to enjoy flirting with Drew Barrymore's mum? Very
entertaining!
Rhys
He was on Frank Skinner's show last Sunday (Sept 17), wherein they showed the wonerful ad.
He was in the Joe Loss Orchestra (who?)
He's Elvis Costello's dad (!)
... but I forget his first name (Mr McManus obviously, John possibly)

Ross McManus was his name.

I think you are wrong. I saw an interview with Elvis Costello
where he said the guy who sang the song was his dad, but that was
not the bloke in the pyjamas.

: just saw old griffin on an old whose line is it anyway? on comedy
I haven't the faintest idea what happened to Pamela Stephenson (or
indeed Chris Langham), but Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones are still
going strong, both as a prime time BBC1 comedy team and as an
enormously successful advertising company (a bit like John Cleese's
involvement with Video Arts, which is what made him his millions).

He's been doing more Smith & Jones...
He also did a high(ish)-brow Sunday afternoon series on books/other
literature.

Didn't she marry Billy Connolly (sp?)?
David McAnally
I think the spelling is right, she went off with him after
leaving her first husband, can't remember the name but he played
Hazel (private eye) in the tv series.
She must be pretty tough 'cause she certainly tamed Connolly!

What ever happened to her and Peter Davison (or is this really old news)?
Thanks for your input...

Er... nothing. Sandra Dickinson married Peter Davison. They're separated now
(maybe even divorced).

Not only is it old news (has anyone heard of Peter Davison in the last
decade), you've got Pamela Stephenson mixed up with someone else -
that blonde woman with the squeaky voice who was in 'Hitch-Hiker's
Guide to the Galaxy'. Sandra something.
Michael
Thanks, Michael!
Boy, is my face red! Here I had thought they were the same person! But I
remember the distinction now! (I know I knew it back when I last saw
Hitchhiker's Guide on TV here in the States.) Pamela Stephenson showed up
(but just barely) on Saturday Night Live one season. The only thing I
remember her doing was a dead-on parody of Billy Idol singing "(I've Got the)
Wrong Voice for This Face" to the tune of "Eyes Without a Face". Mea culpa!

Just a piece of trivia after seeing this thread about the confusion between
Pamela Stephenson and Sandra Dickenson : both ladies appeared in the movie
SUPERMAN III. Pamela Stephenson played Robert Vaughn's very sexy "personal"
assistant and Sandra Dickenson appeared briefly as the house wife who had
supposedly run up an enormous credit account at a well known American store
and got an grapefruit in her face from her husband.
Andy.
Dickinson.
