I remember a tv series with Edward Woodward (the Equalizer) in which he
played a secret service type with a conscience. He didn't like killing
people, especially innocent people.

The show started with a naked bulb on a wire against a brick wall. The bulb
was then shot at and swung to and fro.

Please please please : what is the name of the show? I just can't remember!

I would appreciate an email response.

Could this be "Public Eye"?

The show was "Callan". His sidekick was Smelly or Ugly or something like
that. It was very well done. It did have a rather depressing tone to it
though. I s'pose you could consider the Sandbaggers to be an evolution
of it. Well worth the effort.!wq

The show was called Callan and was one of the best (if not the best)
spy/thriller shows we've had. It was on in the very early
seventies and featured Russell Hunter as Callan's seedy sidekick,
Lonely, Anthony Valentine as his sadistic colleague and I can't
recall the actor who played the boss, Hunter.

It originated in a novel called "Red File for Callan" by James Mitchell, in
which Callan's disaffection was so marked that he was "eliminated"
by Hunter at the end. This re-incarnation of the principle
character echoed the origins of our cosy police series "Dixon of
Dock Green". Dixon, the friendly bobby, was first seen in the film
"The Blue Lamp", in which he was shot dead by escaping thieves near
the end.

Hope this helps,

Lonely. His sidekick was called Lonely.

Callan was the name of the series and the character. Thoroughly
excellent all-round drama.

The show was called "Callan", and Woodward played a secret service agent
who always seemed to be landed with messy jobs. He also had a
singularly unappetizing sidekick/informer.

William Clark.

Well Mike your right, you are way off base.

I've already replied to Charlene directly but having seen this I
decided to post the answer. The programme was called CALLEN, and Edward
Woodward played a 'spy' called Callen who found his conscience after being
'set-up' by his boss.

Cheers,
Ian

Charlene, the program you are think of is "Callan" a product of the late 60's
or (very) eraly 70's.

The program was good, low key, and well produced.

You may remember a sadistic colleague of Callan's called Myers??

FYI, there was a not entirely dissimilar series produced a few years later
called "Diamond Crack Diamond" starring Alan Dobie.....

Topical this one:
Remember a 70's series on BBC with EW, called 1990 ?

It was about a dissident (played by our friend) in a society much
like Thatcher's Britain (human rights abuses, suffering underclass,
etc) except they had a secret police (mind you we have the Special
Branch listening to our phone calls...)

Anyway I was in my early teens but I did rate it. I forget how it
ended though.

Anyone remember ?

Wow, Britain's best sadist ! Played the Security Officer Major Mohne in
the Colditz TV series. And he was a nasty somewhere else too (anyone
remember).

He was quite good in the TV version of Raffles too.

I am afraid I don't remember that one, but does anybody else
remember Granada TV's "The Guardians". This drama series was
set in a para-military society of the 90s.

And talking of such, did anybody else ever see HTV's special "in the future"
dramatized version of "Mrs and Mrs" where all of the audience were kept behind
a wire fence a la UK soccer stadium?

It was something like "XX?XX 1990" or "XX?XX 2000" I think. None of it
I'm sure about, but it was something plus a date in the future, and woodward
drove a souped-uppish Rover.

As an aside:
What do you call a man who eats a peice of wood?
Edward

What do you call a man who eats two peices of wood?
Edward Wood

What do you call a man who eats three peices of wood?
Edward Woodward

What do you call a man who eats 4 peices of wood?
I don't know, but Edward Woodward would.

It was called Callan. It was a rather interesting show.
