Tonight's interview with Alan Partridge was excellent. Steve Coogan
has really got this character sorted, unlike Tony Ferrino. The
mannerisms, facial expressions and material was all spot on.

I really hate clive anderson, so i'd be interested in knowing what happened
with the beegees? Did they just get up and leave half way thru the interview
or something?
I watched last nights installment of crud (the guests were quite good,
Wesley Snipes, Alan Partridge, Joanna Lumley), but would he let any of
them finish a f***ing sentence? It's like, just as the guest is about to
make the point they've been trying to make (it takes a while coz of constant
irritating interruptions (often of the form 'innuendo') from clive), he'll
leap in, stopping them at the vital bit and asking them something else utterly
irrelevant.

Apart from the odious Hamilton, I doubt there's anyone. The creep has
no hope of getting looked after in usual manner for Tory ex-MPs -
lucrative directorships, appointments to quangos or public bodies,
colonial governorships and so on. So, Hamilton is trying to re-invent
himself as a TV personality now that his supply of fivers in brown
envelopes has dried up.

I think he was tolerable, except with Wesley Snipes. Clive kept saying
"yeah, yeah" repeatedly and drowning out the answers.
Just my luck, this was the edition I missed.
Could you describe for me (and anyone else who missed it) exactly what
you saw when the Bee Gees stormed off, especially the words used, the
expressions on faces etc.
Thanks!!!

I have to say that usually when Clive has had spoof guests it's been
very noticeable that some of it has been worked out in advance. (I'm
thinking of the Peter Cook episode and Tony Ferrino.) But this time, it
seemed to be a more natural interview. Anyone?

Well, you didn't ask me, but I'll have a go anyway; as I think my POV
may be a little different to John O'Shea's, you'll see both sides of
things.
I should say that I don't know which BeeGee is which, so I'll refer to
them as 'Chief BG' (with a beard) 'Dark Glasses BG' and 'Hatted BG'.
This is all from memory btw...
********************
BeeGees are given flattering intro. Some pleasant chit-chat. Anderson
then mentions that they have had hits in various musical styles, "pop
hits, rock hits....you're hit writers! Well, we're one letter shy
there perhaps!"
Chief BG is evidently not too pleased by this - smile remains fixed,
but when audience laughs he says "I'm glad *you* find it amusing".
Still, the interview continues on for a few minutes pleasantly enough.
Then, recounting the previous names of the group, Chief BG mentions
that they were once known as "Les Tossers" (I may have misheard this).
Clive says "You'll always be 'Les Tossers' to me!", and Chief BG,
evidently feeling at this point that they have been invited on the
show to be made fools of, says "Which is why you invited us on your
show, Clive!"
Even now, the interview continues, although when Clive mentions how he
liked the BeeGee's earlier work, Chief BG says "I thought we were
tossers!".
Later Clive talks to Dark Glasses BG about a successful solo single
he'd made when the group had broken up at one point. Chief BG chimes
in, "We [Chief+Hat BGs] also had a hit single, called 'Don't forget to
Remember'." Clive: "Oh really, I'd forgotten." Chief BG: "I'm not
surprised, Clive. We're really getting on well, aren't we. So well, I
might just walk out." He stands up, takes off microphone, as does Dark
Glasses BG, and says "you're the tosser, mate." Clive pleads with him
not to do this: "I've never had anyone walk out on me before!" but to
no avail. Hatted BG then says, "I'd better join them, I suppose."
Clive now pleads for him to remain, to which he good-naturedly
replies, "sorry, but I don't do impressions. See you later, Clive."
Clive then wraps up the show, mentioning that the BBC might have to
bring out the potter's wheel to fill in the time. After he says
"Goodnight" he hangs his head. The camera as usual pans over the
audience, who look decidedly depressed.
********************
That's how I remember it anyhow; if anyone has it on tape and wants to
correct any facts, please do so.
My own view of the incident was that Clive did make some bad
judgements during the interview. I'm no fan of the BeeGee's music
myself, but to invite them on your show only to imply that they're
"shit songwriters", even in jest, was going too far, and the 'tossers'
remark, while said with a smile, just made things worse. Perhaps Chief
BG was a little over-sensitive, and the more mellow Hatted BG seemed
to take it all in his stride, but had Clive noticed that the "shit"
remark had offended, he could have averted the walkout by being more
diplomatic later.

Clive Anderson writes about the last Peter Cook interview:
When we finally made the programme the interviews were a mixture of
improvisation and pre-planning. Despite the inventive range of Peter's
initial notions, we settled more safely for four fairly straightforward
chat-show types, each in their own way representing aspects of Peter
himself: a mad judge, the sort of establishment figure that Peter's
background and education might have turned him into if he had not had the
wit to lampoon them instead - he has always been good at playing judges and
patrician politicians; an ageing rock star of the sort that Peter was
rather like as well; a useless football manager (Peter was a fervent Spurs
fan); and a quality controller in a biscuit factory (E.L Wisty really) who
had been captured by aliens.
We treated the fictional characters as though they were real people. I had
a couple of meetings with Peter to sort out which characters he was going
to do and to see what sort of conversations we might have. But after that
Peter had research meetings with my producer Dan Patterson and his
associates and they encouraged Peter to flesh out as much as possible about
his roles.
So when we actually did the show I knew about the fictional characters
background in the same way that I know about the history of a real guest. I
was aware of some of the jokes and ideas that Peter had come up with in the
research meetings. And in the event the interviews on my side were about as
sensible as the ones I do with real people. The interview format allowed
Peter to go off in any direction he liked, secure in the knowledge that we
could always return to the plot with the usual line of talk show
interrogation. And of course the Dudley Moore he was working with that day
might not have been up to scratch. I wish we had done some more now.

I'd go with that. I'd guess that it was rehearsed to a degree, but it
did have a very natural feel to it - I almost started to believe that
AP was a real person.

Good in the entertainment sense.

I'd also generally agree with you - Clive did mishandle the interview
and I think his behaviour at the end of the show proved that. On R4's
Loose Ends the following Saturday, he discussed this and mentioned
that the BGs themselves had mentioned to a researcher that they
wouldn't mind discussing their earlier name. He also indirectly
accused them of being prima donnas.

And can anyone tell me anything about Tony Slattery?

Hey - we missed this guy off the top 100 people British TV could do
without.
Tony Slattery is a multi-talented performer. Its just a shame that we
haven't seen any of those talents yet.
John
It seems that TS has beaten us to it with regards to the 100 people British TV
could do without. I mean, when was the last time that TS was on
normal terrestrial TV?? I can't remember when I last saw him. Perhaps he's
lost in the mire of daytime TV?

Presumably, because we're talking "fiction" here (in the sense that
these characters are... well, characters) some degree of scripting would
have to have gone on beforehand - therefore it's almost inevitable that
audience participation wouldn't be involved.

Sorry guys but the Beegees would definitely fail any test for a sense
of humour. They got exactly the same treatment as all "stars" get on
Clives show - good natured ribbing. I was taping the show (by mistake)
and was so shocked by their walk out that I had to watch the interview
twice to see if there were any grounds for it. None to my mind. The
last BeeGee to go was clearly bemused by his brothers reactions too,
and only left out of sympathy for them.
IMO they have had to many sycophantic American interviewers telling
them how wonderful they are they have lost all sense of reality;
coupled with that, they have never seen Clive Anderson's show before
and did not know what to expect.

something about 'bee gees' being slang for tossers...at which Clive said..
'Youll always be tossers to me'. they didnt walk off straight away...but
after a few mins. Clives face was very serious as if he realised hed gone
a wee bit to far. (maybe they should have replied.'Takes one to know one
Clive!!;)
Mike Warren.
Hahaha :) He *is* tho!!! Doesn't he do "Going for a Song" around lunchtime?
I was watching your Olde Englishe "Prime Minister's Questione Time" on
CSPAN last night and couldn't help noticing that the same Mr. Anderson
is now also leader of the Conservative Party. What a busy life he must
lead.

I've seen him recently on a low budget (read CRAP) TV quiz called, I
think, 'Tibs N Fibs' a medical quiz with two teams of two, one of
each team appears to be a 'Doctor' with the other just a keen interet
in medical matters and either a (sad) member of the public or a
celebrity of even lower standing than Tony Slattery.
To be fair, the teams are quite humourous, but Slattery just seems to
bring the show down lower than its low beginings.
Not sure when the show goes out, and I'm happier that not knowing.
Stephen
Worse - he's on Channel 5.
