When Emmerdale star Malandra Burrows posed for these stunning pictures
exclusively for Sunday Magazine, she revealed what her favourite topic
of conversation is, and why!
WHY MALANDRA BRAGS ABOUT SEX!
Malandra Burrows was the first girl at her School to find out about
sex - and she couldn't wait to break the news to her classmates. I
must have been about eight or nine," giggles the Emmerdale star. "At
school I was a blabbermouth and I got into big trouble with the
teacher She said, 'I don't think you should be telling ever, everyone
about this, their parents might not want them to know'
But you know what it's like if you've found out something that nobody
knows about!" Malandra's dad Malcolm recalls: "We were always very
open about things with her. At the age of five, Malandra was at the
birth of her brother Shawn so she was curious about how it all worked.
Later, I explained by taking her to the zoo and relating it to
animals." Malandra is grateful for her open-minded upbringing. "It's
like alcohol," she says. "We were kind of allowed it at home - little
thimblefuls of wine, not the hard stuff or anything - so it wasn't
anything new. I think if you take something away from j people it
becomes kind of taboo and that's when there are problems."
Adds 61-year old Malcolm: When she was about seven-and-a-half I told
Malandra about how, when men and women like each other they get
married and I eave home. she looked up at me and said, 'Does that mean
when I grow | up I'll have to leave home?' " Malandra did eventually
leave home and the cheeky schoolgirl has grown into a glamorous
actress. But she is still, by her own admission, a little minx who
loves playing practical jokes. "Don't ever dare me, 'cos I'll do
it!" laughs Malandra, who's now 29, wrinkling her nose. It's nice to
he thought of as a little bit mischievous, a little bit flaring. Why
not?"
Ever since she performed in a holiday camp talent show at the age of
two, Malandra has been used to being the centre of attention. She
admits to being thrilled at being lusted after. "If you walk past a
building site and people whistle, there's usually a right hoo-ha about
it. But I say, 'Thanks guys, that's made my day!'' Malandra, who
stars as troubled Kathy Bates in Emmerdale, had no hesitation about
posing for our sensational pictures. "To me it's always been, You're
only here for a short time, love what you do and do what you can,' "
she explains. "It's too easy to say no to everything you're asked to
do. Live life, for gods sakes
Will Malandra's fiance, graphic designer, Jonathan Armstead, 29, be
jealous when he sees the pictures "Probably!" she grins. He'll love
them and then he'll wonder 'How many people have seen these?! I'm not
bothered about that!''
Malandra and Justin, who both live in Leeds, West Yorkshire, cancelled
their wedding in August because it clashed with the release of her
second single Summer Night Love. Jonathan walked out for two days.
''It was kind of difficult at the time, when everything shattered,"
Malandra says. 'But Jonathan and I both decided the music should
come first, because it was a unique opportunity. You've got to grab
the bull by the horns. So there's not been much of a personal life
this year. Even my dogs bark at me when [ come home. I have to say
It's me silly, if s Mummy!' It has put a strain on my relationship
with Jonathan because the recording side has been very demanding and
I've been t away from home a lot. It has been tough."
So is the wedding ever going to happen? She laughs. "At the moment
everything's just been kind of mad and we've got no further Once
you're signed to a record company your life's taken over a bit. "
But they are still together? ''Um . . . yes." She laughs again.
"It's a tough time but we knew it would be. But that's life - life is
not w plain sailing." Malandra should know. This is the second
time she has been engaged and she has admitted that her parents'
divorce may have affected her view of marriage.
She was 14 when her mum Sandra left home and the family was split down
the middle. Malandra and Shawn, now 24, stayed with their dad, who is
now her manager, while their sister Rianne, 27 went to live with their
mum. Malandra doesn't like to talk about her relationship with her
mother but she is convinced that splitting up was the best thing her
parents could have done. 'We had quite a few years of the trying
and the hell, and that can be more scarring. And it hit us at the
worst time. If you're younger you accept it. She didn't speak to
anyone outside the family about the pain of her parents separation. "I
was the only one at school whose parents were divorced," she says
sadly. It had a stigma to it then. "Maybe, looking back, I was
hypersensitive about it all, maybe I had it wrong, but
that's the way I felt at the time.
So I didn't tell anybody, I just carried it around as baggage.
Maybe it wasn't too good a thing but that's the way I chose to handle
it. And I wouldn't be the first. I think it comes down to pride - your
definition of pride at that time. We tend to communicate a lot better
now don't we?"
Malandra worked hard at school and got nine O-levels, all A grades.
This didn't leave too much time for socializing or boyfriends. There
were a couple but never anything serious," she explains. "When I was
about 16 I was offered the chorus of Evita. I didn't take it but if I
had done, where would I be and what would I have been doing by now?
But there are so many crossroads in life and I never want to look back
and say, I wish I'd done that " Malandra is committed to her singing
career but she has no intention of leaving Emmerdale, which she joined
when she was 18. The rural soap will be celebrating its silver
anniversary in October 1997. "It would be nice to see 25 years in,"
she says. While she keeps urging Emmerdale's scriptwriters to let
Kathy have some good luck for a change, it doesn't look as though her
on screen love life is going to improve.
Her relationship with Sean the sexy chef is totally over. But, says
Malandra: "I think Kathy still has a soft spot for her ex Dave, and I
think she'd like to get back at Kim for stealing him from her." Off
screen, though, Malandra is more optimistic about her future. I would
love to have children, ' she says softly. I'm very maternal. I know
actresses who have left it too late and they're full of regrets. And I
know a lot of people who say, 'Not next year, we're going on holiday,
then we're doing up the house,' and it's never going to happen,
they'll never have kids.
I'd be very upset if I didn't have children. But imagine another me
- oh, what trouble!"

There was also a piece about the actress who plays Viv Windsor and her
real lifeaffair with some old boy. I will try and post it tomorrow.
