Demon's news server is having a few problems at the moment, so I hope I'm not
repeating a thread!
The headlines in the Sunday Mirror today read:

Soap Hunk's Gay Secret
Michael French's affair with Albert Square cop
Britain's biggest soap heart-throb is having a gay love affair with another
EastEnders actor.
When the cameras stop rolling, Michael turns to co-star Bryan Lawrence,
who plays a togh cop in the show, for love.

I guess this leaves Lindsey 'Carol Jackson' Coulson's husband on shaky
ground, since he named Michael French in his divorce...then again, maybe
he swings both ways!

Oh why are all the gorgeous men gay?!

Isn't the "Mirror" the UK equivalent of the US "Enquirer"? If so, do
people actually BELIEVE what's reported therein?

I seems unlikely to me, considering the wide acceptance of gays
particularly in the artistic community, that a high profile actor on a
highly rated program such as EE would feel it necessary to stay "in the
closet".

While MF *may* be a "notch" above average in the looks department, IMO,
gorgeous seems a bit of reach. (Of course, his character is such a slug
that it is hard for me to gauge his looks objectively!)

Why do the sexual practices of others interest us so much? (Including
the hetrosexual relationships.) I can't imagine what possible difference
it could make unless someone were considering the object of interest as a
potential mate. (I for one never even plan to "lay-eyes" on MF in real
life, much less become personally involved in his sex life!) And at the
same time, as when I pass an auto accident, there is a morbid desire to
look, and to know all the sordid details. Ah, the human condition....

I think Terry has already made it quite clear that he doesn't resemble
any of the EE men - he implied he's gorgeous, so that certainly
rules out any of the blokes on EE, including that awful greasy spaniard
who was supposed to be charming and sexy!! YEUK!!.

It is a shame they've never managed to get a decent looking actor on there
and when they have anyone supposedly good-looking bloke they make the character
so slimy and smarmy that he's instantly repulsive to any intelligent woman.
David and Guppy are two which instantly spring to mind as revolting
slimy liars whom women are supposed to find attractive!! As if anyone in their
right mind would go for them!!

Ah. Note the phrase "greasy spaniard" (as well as the inappropriate
failure to capitalize the "S" in the proper noun). Just think: it was
only last week that this same Pook was declaiming that the British have
far broader cultural horizons than Americans because they travel so widely

I completely agree - and another one you can add to the list is Tricky
Dicky (sort of). Well, I don't think he was good looking, but in the
story he was supposed to be the devilishly handsome kind, but he was
also slimy and horrible.

I thought you women always went for the complete bastards, therefore
the reason you only fancy the characters who are slimey, smarmy and
nasty is because they are slimey, smarmy and nasty! :-)

What about Mark, he's a nice chap, don't you fancy him?
Or wossname, Teds son, he seems like a nice enough bloke.
Alan Jackson? Steady, reliable(ish)...
Then of course there is the ultimate nice guy, Nigel :-)

You gals have got loads of choice, especially compared to the severe
lack of nice girlies on the show. Sarah is the best, but she's hardly
in EE any more (urgh, I feel like a cradle snatcher saying that, she
must be older in RL though!).

Well, I can't quite believe anyone could be as stupid as you demonstrate
here, but I will explain very simply for your benefit.

*You* think that Guillermo is a greasy creep so you assume all Spaniards
are greasy creeps?
It appears to be you who is guilty of some serious bigotry if you think that
one description of a particular creep is representative of the entire race.

Note, I didn't describe Jose as a greasy creep because he didn't suck up
in that repulsively sycophantic and obviously insincere way to Sam's mother
just to get into the daughter's knickers.

You have an amazing ability to jump to totally unwarranted conclusion from
individual examples. Your assumption is totally ridiculous and
if one were to extend your amazingly bad logic, you would
think that because I think Ruth has a bad haircut then you
assume all Scots women have bad haircuts?

Other stupid assumptions that your logic dictates:

I describe Grant as a psychopath, therefore since Grant is a Londoner
all Londoners are balding psychopaths who dribble snot?

David is a slimy liar, so all British used car salesmen
are slimy liars? (haha well...)

Sanjay is an unfaithful gambling liar so all Indians are unfaithful gamblers?

If you really want to infer these ridiculous generalisations, go ahead, but
I suggest you don't depend on my adjectives describing an individual
to form your outlook on the entire world's population.

He was not only totally ugly but had a nasty personality too.

You should get out and meet some different women, unless of course you
are a slimy bastard in which case the ones you're thinking of are probably
already going nuts over you!

>
>What about Mark, he's a nice chap, don't you fancy him?

He's a nice chap, and used to be one of the better ones in a nice-but-dim
way but he's become a very boring character since he got married.

>Or wossname, Teds son, he seems like a nice enough bloke.

Tony? Yes, he is just about the most attractive bloke there, and pretty
sharp too.
Still, I suspect he's going to be a real bastard. He hasn't done anything
really bad yet...only a little bit of blackmail of his sister.
And he's a lazy git who'll do anything to avoid a bit of hard work.
You're right he hasn't got the slimy patter with women, but he's definitely
into some dodgy dealing with that Dan.

>Alan Jackson? Steady, reliable(ish)...
Yes, he is about the most sensible and normal person in the whole square.

But you left out my favourite, Willy. I just love his cardigans and his
tastefully decorated house, not to mention his sexy way of chasing
Pauline and his wonderful way with words of abject and desperate begging.

I think Tiffany is very pretty, as long as you don't mind a lot of make-up -
but then that was supposed to be her profession. And she's the only
one there with a really good figure.

What about Ruth, if you can understand what she's saying. (Or perhaps you
don't care anyway - it's only nagging)?

Apart from them almost every other female has very bad roots or some other
bad hair disaster.

No, I'm a very nice guy, verging on Nigel niceness, and I've been
dumped on numerous occasions for the classic 'complete bastard to
women' category of men. Maybe thats because I grew up in Essex, we
all know what Essex girls are like ;-)

How very superficial of you, you have to look deeper, at the kind,

Tiffany is very attractive, definately a 'babe', but her personality
is quite terrible. (From what I've heard the actress is a much nicer
person in RL though...)

Ruth is quite nice, when she wants to be, but she does nag too much.
I get enough of that when I visit my Mother :-)

Depends on your preference, but I think Bianca has great hair. In fact
when Bianca is happy (she managed to stay happy for nearly three weeks
before the fight in the vic) she is a very attractive person, but then
she turns into this raging demon of a person when she gets upset!

Jane, *you* wrote the phrase "greasy spaniard." If your point was that

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Are you *very* stupid? I thought he was greasy and said so. In fact you have
quoted the phrase.
This is *precisely* what I said - "the greasy spaniard".
Since Guillermo(whose name I temporarily forgot) is the only Spaniard
we've seen in the series in the recent past, it was absolutely obvious
to everyone (except you!!) that he was the subject of the description.

>his nationality in an insulting way, you have betrayed your own bigotry.

It may be that "Spaniard" is derogatory in the US, but in Europe it is
most definitely not. You have betrayed only your own ignorance
of English terminology.

If *anyone* has any evidence that "Spaniard" is considered derogatory
in England, then I'd be interested to hear it and I would naturally concede
that you are correct, however if it is only in the US (and I'm not remotely
convinced that you're right in this - any US people know this? - Nathan?)
then I'm certainly going to continue to use the word as the normal
reference for a person of Spanish origin.

I suspect that if we were to take a poll, most people would agree with me,
that Spaniard is a non-derogatory descriptive term for the race.
If one were racist, then terms like "wop" or "spic" would probably be used.

Since you're obviously easily confused, I think you (and everyone) would
have been confused if I'd said the "greasy bloke", since it could have referred
to any number of people, including Phil and Ricky who are literally greasy from
their job, and David and Guppy who are greasy in personality. You really
do have a problem with English comprehension: perhaps you should consult
someone who has a better understanding of English before attempting to argue
a point about language, certainly with me. You simply demonstrate your
ignorance at every attempt.

>-- I've never seen the EE
>character you so obnoxiously described.

Hahah typical. So naturally you immediately jump into a conversation
about him and voice your opinion about a character which you
have never seen and about whom you have no information? How very
American of you to conjure up an opinion from absolutely no evidence.

An intelligent person would refrain from jumping to incorrect
conclusions and making such ill-informed comments until in
possession of the full facts.

I bet all the other Americans here love you and your demonstrations
of all those deficiencies in intelligence and logic that I'm always
commenting upon. You really demonstrate what an AOL is remarkably well.

Apparently Logic wasn't one of your "O" levels. The word "Spaniard" is
not derogatory per se, nor did I suggest such a thing; but when you couple
a derogatory word such as "greasy" with a national identification like
"Spaniard," you are negatively implicating a nationality, not merely one

You really are reading-impaired, aren't you? I never voiced any opinion

But once again your narrow-minded bigotry is showing: this time,

If you're comparing with David and Guppy, yes.
As for comparing with the other EE men, "prefer" probably depends on
the context. He's too much of a wimp to be preferable in most situations,
as he's sometimes dishonest through fear of repercussions.

Now that you mention it....
Although the Sharon/Phil affair was pretty "steamy"; the most pathetic
have to be Ricky and Bianca who always "peck" at each other as if one has
some kind of communicable disease! (Have always had the feeling that the

It is my experience that most women (but not all) are not attracted to
kind generous warm hearted men like Nigel Bates or Lofty. The Dens,
Simon (and David) Wicks of this world would seem to attract far more
attention. The "treat 'em mean keep 'em keen" types always seemed to
have the most success with women.

You definately have a point, and this is likely why the divorce rate is
so high; there is always someone *more* dangerous to be had. While these
"bad boys" may be fun for the short term instant gratification bit, no
woman in her right mind would marry one. I'd take a Nigel or Lofty for
the long haul.

You see, there are men you "date" and men you marry. Blokes like Den and
Simon are in the first category, Nigel and Lofty in the latter.

But you seem like a perceptive guy Stuart, surely you already knew this!

I think Lofty was the sexiest thing ever on EE! I 'm sorry they've
not brought him back. Michelle never realized what a good thing she
had. Remember ladies, those bookish types try harder and they're
always very thankful!!!

Well, whether they believe it or not is debatable, but as for the truth it
relates, unfortunately, this is all too often accurate. For example, they
printed that Princess Di was having secret trysts with Will Carling. I thought,
they're probably just good friends and the Mirror is blowing it out of
proportion. WRONG! They were having an affair.
The newspaper The Sunday Sport is more on par with your National Enquirer I
think.

I don't know why they interest us so much. I passed on this story as
interesting to EE fans and to divert from less friendly, off-topic threads. My
opinion as to his looks was to directly provoke a friendly debate.
Since the thread has already had about 40 follow-ups, it was obviously of
interest to many.

What may also be of interest is that before this gay story broke, Michael
French was reported to be leaving EE and getting his own show elsewhere. Now it
has been confirmed that he has had his EE contract extended. Now was the story
of his leaving untrue in the first place, or has he changed his mind, or were
the makers of the new show after a heart-throb for the female viewers and now
find their star unsuitable? I guess I'll have to keep reading the Mirror to
find out.

Incidentally, according to the Mirror, Michelle 'Cindy' Collins has been
proposed to by her Italian lover of 3 months. They met at Mick Hucknall's club
in Miami and she was pregnant to him by the time she left Florida 2 weeks
later.

Mick Hucknall is not IMO gorgeous, and I have met him IRL, so why would meeting
Michael French, who is probably not as famous, be so unlikely?

From seeing (not reading of course) the National Enquirer at the
check-out at the local supermarket. IMHO it most resembles the Sun
newspaper back home in UK. The only thing the Sun is good for is back
page for sports, page 3 for the girl with the BIG blue eyes, and wrapping

<G> Jim, but really, looks aren't everything! (God knows if they were, *at least* 80%

Nigel is certainly preferable to the likes of Wicksy, David, or either of the

Oi,
