I believe that it's because "Alec" is a nickname for Alexander and
"Sandy" is also a nickname for Alexander (I think "Sandy" is a
Scottish nickname though).

Correct. But the point is, Alec is actually *called* ALEC, and not
Alexander - that's why he doesn't like it.

Do you remember his new-found son-in-law, (Vicky's Dad, now deceased) who
always insisted on calling him ALEX, also short for Alexander. That riled
him, too.

One of Jim's most endearing traits, other than smashing televisions in
sad women's bedrooms, is his 'customising' ,for want of a better word,
of peoples names.
Samir became 'Sammy'
Raquel he calls 'Rackle' (always cracks me up!)
Alec became 'Sandy' (Alec's full name is Alexander, hence Sandy')

Therfore instead of 'How are you Alec?', we get, 'What about you,
Sandy?'

BTW isn't it time Jim had one of his 'see this red rag? see this
bull?' sessions again. I don't think he's had one since the Roberts TV
storyline.

It's a diminutive of Alex(ander)

I think this has already been answered, but Sandy (and Alec, Alex) are
common(ish) abbreviations for Alexander so Alexander Gilroy becomes Alec
or Sandy.

Sandy is one of the abbreviations commonly used for Alexander.

Jim Mc or MacDonald would probably call anyone named Alec or Alex - Sandy.
