A few years ago Emily had a mental breakdown, and I seem to remember she
was found wandering the streets in her slippers. The trouble is, I can't
remember when this was or why she had the breakdown, and everybody I've
asked has also been stumped. According to "The Coronation Street Story"
the Rev Bernard Morten proposed marriage in 1993 but dumped her when he
found out that she had suffered a breakdown, but there doesn't seem to be
any reference to the breakdown itself.

Please can anyone help - when and why?

It started in May 1992. Emily started acting strangely, giving signs of being
depressed. In the first few weeks as we saw it she was perfectly alright with
everyone except Percy, who had then been her lodger for about 4 years, and was
clearly getting on her nerves.
As her depression worsens, Percy makes it worse by lying to everyone about her
being unwell and not up to visitors, so when she was in the house no one was
allowed in and her consition worsens.
Everyone is seen commenting that poor Emily can't get any peace from Percy who
seems to want to rule her life.
In early June 1992 Emily starts being forgetful. She offers to babysit for
Kevin and Sally, and forgets to turn up. She offers to mend a skirt for Tracey
and forgets about it. On both occasions, when Tracey and Kevin wonder if Emily
is herself, Percy tells them coldly she's fine and they have no right to say
such things! She also forgets to go to Rita's wedding.
It comes to the point where Emily stays in the house all day, and Percy won't
let anyone near her, so everyone wonders why she hasn't been seen for days.
Percy continues to lie about her condition.
During this time, on one of her better days, she offers to loan Mike £10,000 to
open a new business. Percy overhears this and tells Ken Mike is taking
advantage of Emily not being well. When Emily hears that she tells Percy to
mind her own business.
People by now are starting to tell Percy that *he* is the reaon Emily isn't
herself - having to see him all the time!
Finally, in Mid June she just disappears from the house and when Percy tries to
get help to find her everyone tells him she's just getting away from him.
Finally they believe her and she is found sitting at the railway station, with
no coat on and in her slippers, in a very confused state.
She is admitted to hospital and it is put down to a 'nervous breakdown'. There
was never any mention of the cause of it, and a couple of weeks later she is
back home.

I have personally always thought, going by what we saw, that she was driven to
it by living with Percy. That would drive anyone round the bend! Specially as
he was especially sufocating when she didn't feel well and she just asked him
to leave her alone, and he didn't.

Hope that answers your question in some way!

He would never have known about it if Percy hadn't told him. It was really only
a bout of depression, clearly made worse by Percy himself, but Percy liked to
tell people Emily was practically a psycopath! He was jealous of Emily marrying
Bernard, which is why he told him, laying it on thick, implying Bernard would be
marrying some kind of psycho.

And I noticed every time after that Emily didn't act the way Percy wanted her
to act, he always impled she was going 'funny in the head' again.
There was a very unpleasant side to Percy.

In reality too. My mother went to the studios for a visit a few years ago. Percy (I
don't know his real name) was there signing books (I'm not sure what the book was).
She and another senior with her had bought photos of Percy and she asked him if he
would autograph them. He refused and was quite nasty in his refusal saying
something like 'I only sign books'. My mother who is quite fiesty immediately tore
up his picture and threw it on his table with a
suitable comment.

Hi there,

an excellent reply about the breakdown but where on earth did you dig all
that detailed information up from ? I'm impressed ! I've spent the last few
hours searching the web-sites but didn't find this detailed information.

Looking forward to a reply

Colin Jones.

I have been taping every episode of Corrie since November 1988. I'm onto tape
161 now, and as I know I have a bad memory, when I was about 6 years into
taping I simply went through them all, episode by episode making notes of what
was happening in each particular episode. I therefore just had to look back
over the notebooks I've filled and find that particular storyline. I remembered
it was the early 90's and around when there was a wedding....
It covered the episodes between May 11 and June 29 1992, to be exact! And I
just read my notes, copying out more or less what I'd written at the time.
Simple really!

And I thought I was a dedicated fan ! I have been addicted since about 1980
when I watched a Christmas episode where all the men got drunk after/before
going to a football match.

About 10 years ago when I was working in Germany a month at a time I got my
mother to tape all the episodes so I could catch up on them on my weekend
off. People called me sad, I can't think why !

What do you do when you are on holiday ? Do you tape it while you are away ?

Is there anything that comes before the street ? Have you ever missed an
episode since starting your diary ?

The only person I think that can beat you for dedication is Mike Plowman
with his visual update site, a must when I miss an episode.

Do you have Sky and watch the old episodes on Granada Plus ? I think these
are a treat and just knock spots off todays episodes. I tape all the five
episodes during the week and watch them on a Saturday when there is nothing
better on.

What is your favourite episode of all time ? Mine was when Stan had died and
Hilda was at home opening the parcel with his belongings from the hospital.
When she held his glasses I just cried. Soft I know but she took such a
great part.

Glad to Know Your So Dedicated

Regards

Colin

It certainly did; thanks a lot for that! Reading through it jogged my
memory and I remembered some of the details. I can stop annoying
everyone I know by asking about this now!

Wasn't there a time when Percy thought Emily was going mad and invited
some people round for dinner, and Emily didn't cook the veg or something
- possibly deliberately to get at Percy? I think this might have been
after she'd gone back home.

That rang a bell more to do with Bernard, so I had a look and I was right.
Bernard finished with Emily on April 18 1994, on April 27th she had Mavis and
Derek round for dinner and she served them a meal that was only half cooked -
and the peas were still frozen! [Though Derek did say his were starting to
defrost!]
Percy was nowhere in sight at least!

Thanks again! I remember Derek's comment now!

I'd like to claim saddest of them all, as I've been in gloomy Geneva for
the past eight years, during which time I've relied on Mother -
unfortunately exhibiting too many signs of Alzheimer's for my liking
(including the fact I look and act just like her but am some few yrs
younger..) - to tape Corrie for me weekly. Let's be Frank, let's even
be Earnest (Wilde) - the inheritance won't be worth the tapes when she
goes to that old editing room in the Sky (to add insult to injury, she
used to work for Auntie Beeb during the Blackout, before ye olde
satellite was even a mote in Murdoch's eye)

BRING BACK BET LYNCH'S EARRINGS.. (with Julie Goodyear in a supporting
(Roy's) rôle).

Yours,
Anne, allergic to Geneva, where, to paraphrase Alex C., there are one
million cattle who can't be wrong..., they just outnumber the Swiss. A
crime against Helvetic Law.

That was a long time ago! Emily has had some good storylines over the years
with a lot of good understated performances.
