When I was young and watching Dad's Army for the first time I seem to
remember James Beck dieing and then the series continuing for a long time
after he died. I mean that I thought there were many more non-Beck Dad's
Armies than Beck Dad's Armies.
Watching UK Gold and the repeats on BBC, however, makes me think I am wrong.
James Beck seems to be in all of them.
What are the episode figures with and without Beck?

I have noticed the same effect with Trevor Bannister (Mr Lucas) in Are You
Being Served? I thought he left early to be replaced by a load of
nonentities; but No!, there he is episode after episode.
And the bloke who played Mr Granger and Mr Pickwick - the original Mr
Granger - there never seems to be any episodes with him in. I find it sort
of weird.

I have since learned that Beck did not die during Dad's Army. He left to
make his own program called Romany Jones and died after the end of the first
season of that.

Miss Belfridge was never a 'B.', a 'C' or maybe even a 'D', but not a 'B.'

A very vast answer. Have you considered doing a website about Are You
Being Served?

No, this was a copy and paste job from this website:
http://uk.imdb.com/Title?0068040

I listed all the names because I couldn't remember a Mr Pickwick.

There are already a bunch on this subject:

Doubtless a reference to James Hayter ('Mr Tebbs') - he played the role
in a film version of The Pickwick Papers. Also the original voice for
the 'Mr Kipling does make exceedingly good cakes' commercials by the
way.

My fault, I am sorry about that. I did indeed mean James Hayter, but I
couldn't be bothered to spend two minutes looking up Pickwick Papers on the
IMDb.
A very funny film still, in my opinion.
I have read the book and always think of James Hayter as I read it.

James Beck appeared in 60 episodes of Dad's Army. A further 20 episodes were
made after he died.

Nonentities? James Hayter, Benny Lee, Alfie Bass... hardly nonentities,
surely. Admittedly Milo Sperber was better known in the legit. theatre
than in TV, but still... Alfie Bass turned in some of the best
performances ever in AYBS, IMHO, EPNS, OHMS...

I can't actually remember James Hayter and Alfie Bass playing Mr Lucas's
part, but I am sure they were professional enough to handle it.
I can imagine James Hayter, in his Mr Kipling voice, asking some cheeky
double entendre about Mrs Slocombe's pussy.

Er - not sure what happened there - I think I didn't quote enough of the
article I was replying to, but the actors I mentioned each played senior
assistants filling the gap left by the death of Arthur Brough, (Mr
Grainger). As far as I recall, the only replacement for Trevor Bannister
was Mike Berry, as Mr Spooner.
