I have noticed the same effect with Trevor Bannister (Mr Lucas) in Are You
Being Served? I thought he left early to be replaced by a load of
nonentities; but No!, there he is episode after episode.
And the bloke who played Mr Granger and Mr Pickwick - the original Mr
Granger - there never seems to be any episodes with him in. I find it sort
of weird.

I have since learned that Beck did not die during Dad's Army. He left to
make his own program called Romany Jones and died after the end of the first
season of that.
Alan
Beck died Aug 6, 1973. (burst pancreas) Dad's Army ran from 1968 to 1977.

A very vast answer. Have you considered doing a website about Are You
Being Served?

I listed all the names because I couldn't remember a Mr Pickwick.

Doubtless a reference to James Hayter ('Mr Tebbs') - he played the role
in a film version of The Pickwick Papers. Also the original voice for
the 'Mr Kipling does make exceedingly good cakes' commercials by the
way.

My fault, I am sorry about that. I did indeed mean James Hayter, but I
couldn't be bothered to spend two minutes looking up Pickwick Papers on the
IMDb.
A very funny film still, in my opinion.
I have read the book and always think of James Hayter as I read it.

surely.
I can't actually remember James Hayter and Alfie Bass playing Mr Lucas's
part, but I am sure they were professional enough to handle it.
I can imagine James Hayter, in his Mr Kipling voice, asking some cheeky
double entendre about Mrs Slocombe's pussy.
