LOVING Update for Wednesday, December 29:
STORYLINE: MAX MEETS CHRISTOPHER and TRUCKER LECTURES CASEY
(location: Trucker's house)
* Casey brings Max to Trucker's house. Christopher runs away from Max
[I still think he's a poor child actor] while Trucker and Casey try to
get the two to meet. Trucker says now that they have a dog, "you two
[Stephanie and Casey] are really settling down together, huh?"
* "So when's the wedding?" Trucker says that Steph is a nice girl.
Casey says yeah, but after what happened with Ally, he isn't going to
race to any altar. "Does Stephy feel the same way?" "Yeah, she's
cool, she knows where I'm coming from." "But you two *are* living
together?" Casey stops and turns and says, "she makes great cupcakes."
"Well, I didn't know that. You should marry her right away."
Eventually, Trucker tells Casey that he reminds of him when he first
met Trisha -- he tried everything to *not* get involved. Casey says
he does have feelings for Steph. "Do you love her?" "What? No.
I -- I mean, I could, maybe, I guess, someday, but it depends on a
lot of things." [Boy, don't you love a definitive answer?]
Christopher runs to Trucker and whispers something in his ear. "Not
until Dinah Lee arrives." [Don't know what that was all about...]
Casey says that he and Steph are good together. She *needs* him, and
he likes that -- it's nice to be needed. Trucker says neediness can
become commitment. "Nah. I'd see that coming." Trucker tells him
that the consequences have a way of sneaking up from behind.
[End of this storyline for today.]
STORYLINE: DINAH LEE & CURTIS
(starting location: their bedroom)
* DL is lying in bed, alone. The room becomes lighter, waking her up.
Curtis had opened the blinds. It is afternoon! He says he has already
been out Christmas shopping, getting gifts for everybody. "And I had
time to get this for you." He hands her a box.
* She says that having him back is the only present she needs. He says
he *had* to do this. He has missed so many "firsts": their first
Thanksgiving together, her first birthday as his wife, etc. He says
that her face kept him alive during his captivity. If she was the last
thing he thought about before he went to sleep, he knew that would keep
the nightmares away.
Dinah Lee starts to tell him that she was starting to get back to her
life, that she thought he wasn't coming back, and Trucker -- Curtis
interrupts, saying that Trucker was the *best* thing that could have
happened, and that he was so glad that Trucker was here. "We both had
to do whatever it was to keep us sane."
He tells her to please open her present. Inside is a necklace made
from the pearl she first dropped at the airstrip. Curtis says he is
going to replace the whole necklace, but this is the most precious
pearl. She thanks him.
Curtis says that they have one more delivery to make.
* [At Trucker's house.]
Curtis and Dinah Lee arrive. Curtis gives Trucker a gift, which he
decides he will open later. Trucker says he didn't expect to see them;
he thought they would spend some time together (alone). Curtis says
that they *will*, and this is their last stop. He and DL have some
catching up to do, and especially some movies to catch up on. Dinah
Lee tells Curtis that he has to see ALADDIN. Trucker agrees. Trucker
then recommends SOMMERSBY. DL gives Trucker a hard time because he
fell asleep when they rented it. They awkwardly explain to Curtis
that they used to rent movies while they watched Christopher.
Oh yes, Christopher! Curtis has a gift for Christopher, too. He goes
upstairs, leaving Trucker and DL alone.
* [Awkward small talk ("How have you been?" "You look happy.") deleted.]
DL asks if they are still friends. Trucker takes her hand, then says,
"Of course we are. The best." Curtis comes downstairs and sees them
holding hands.
STORYLINE: STEPHANIE CONFIDES IN CLAY (!)
(location: hotel bar)
* Clay hands Stephanie a handkerchief.
S: "My world is such a mess."
C: "How?"
S: "I'm getting old, Mr. Alden."
C: "OK."
S: "And my mom says I'm going to grow old and be alone for the rest
of my life."
C: "So this is about a guy."
S: "How did you know?"
C: "I *am* old."
* [Clay's prompting questions deleted...] Stephanie says that she
wishes that holidays could be made optional. She hates them, starting
with Thanksgiving, and Christmas and New Year's are the worst. They
aren't the same since her dad left -- when it's just her and her mom
with an oversized turkey between them and nothing to say to each other
except "pass the gravy."
Clay says he knew her father -- they did business in the past. He says
that he seemed like a good man. Steph says he was very good at being
a good man. He left because he couldn't handle the responsibility.
She remembers how he used to look at her as a kid -- like she was just
there invading in his life. Clay says that's not her fault. Steph
says maybe if she had never been born... "That is not true. Believe
me, I'm the expert. A man does not run because of his children, he
runs because of himself."
* Clay says he knows all about being an absent father, but, who knows?
His kids might not have turned out as good as they did had he been
there! Stephanie says she turned around and went the other way. She
reminds him of the first time they met -- when she tried to steal his
wallet at that very bar. Clay says he was intrigued by that; nobody
had tried to hustle him in a long time. Stephanie says she isn't like
that, and Clay says he knows. Clay says it made him laugh, which makes
her laugh now. He says it reminded him of his young days.
S: "You're not old."
C: "You're not, either!"
She thanks him for the conversation. She's glad they bumped into each
other. He is, too. He offers to escort her out the back door [so she
doesn't see her mother again, I assume]. She accepts his offer. They
go to leave.
Casey enters looking for her. Casey sees them; they see him and stop.
* [Casey's and Stephanie's small talk deleted.] Clay smiles and says,
"This is _the guy_, isn't it?" Stephanie covers by saying that Clay
was just cheering her up about her modeling career. "About your
_career_?" "Yeah. No. Just other stuff I have going on, no big
deal. [To Clay.] Thank you for your handkerchief." Clay tells her
to keep it, and that he'll leave them alone. He says he is glad he
could help her out. He pecks her on the cheek and leaves.
Casey, a bit stunned by all of this, says, "That wasn't about your
_career_, was it? [Stephanie squirms but says nothing.] Look, if you
have a problem, you can come to me about it. You don't need to go to
some -- stranger." Stephanie says that Clay is a really nice man.
Casey says that is the best-kept secret in Corinth. "So how was lunch
with mom?" Steph snaps, "It was fine." She says they saw Cooper and
Ally celebrating their engagement. Casey says he has already talked
to Ally about it. Steph says she wasn't really upset about that -- she
knows they have a history. She just has a lot of other things on her
mind right now, and talking to Clay helped her a lot. "Next time, come
to me." "OK." "Promise?" "Yeah, if you're around, I will." Casey,
after a pause, says, "Of course."
STORYLINE: LEO LEAVES SHANA? AFTER ALL THE TROUBLE THEY HAD?
(location: cabin)
* Leo is grabbing his things and getting ready to leave Shana. She
says it was only a game. Leo says it is a game they can't play.
Leo asks if Shana wants him to leave the phone. She starts to try to
talk him out of leaving. Leo, louder, asks again. Shana numbly nods
her head yes. Leo says he wants to be gone by the time Stacey and
Buck return from skating. Leo asks if he should take the car. "Oh,
forget about the stupid car and the phone! [Softer.] Are you leaving
the cabin? Are you leaving *me*?"
* Leo says he doesn't want to hurt Shana. Shana says that if he leaves,
it will hurt. He says he's doing this for her own good. "Since when
do you decide what's good for me?" They smile. He says he's making
things worse for her and Patti. "Well then, stop!" He says it's
his fault -- he's handled things all wrong. She asks if it is his
self-pity. No.
L: "What do you want from me?"
S: "Courage."
L: "It is taking every bit I have to walk away."
S: "Well, then, just dig deeper and *stay*! I want the man I fell in
love with! The guy who is everything I dreamed of."
Leo shakes his head. "I can't." He turns and opens the door.
S: "Leo! I am taking responsibility for 50 percent of 100 percent of
our relationship. Why can't you do the same?"
L: "I don't know how."
S: "Do you want to?"
L: "What I want is for us to go back to the beginning."
Shana is now crying.
S: "We can't!! Leo, I look at all the stuff we've been through. All
the uncertainty and the pain and the fear, and -- [she grabs his head
and turns it toward her.] Look at me! I look at our daughter and I
know that it's all worth it. Please, would you just get back in here
with me? *Feel* this with me?"
* Leo apologizes that he didn't make it as her knight in shining armor.
She says that isn't what she wants. Leo says he wishes they could go
back, and be introduced to each other by a friend-of-a-friend, and
meet each other, and be engaged, then married, *then* plan for a
child. Shana says that child might *still* be Patti...or she might
have been born without any problems. Leo asks who *wouldn't* want it
to be that way. "You don't always get what you want, Leo, but you
always get what you need." Leo asks where she read that *crap*. After
a pause, he says he's sorry.
S: "I'm not. I'm thankful that you finally told me the truth and that
you were honest with me. You're right. This is dumb."
Shana hands him his stuff.
S: "Here, you take the car. Good bye, Leo."
We see a shot of Leo, bewildered.
* L: "What are you saying?"
S: "You can have the car."
L: "So you want me to leave permanently?"
S: "Well, what's the alternative?"
L: "Shana, we could take the time to see if we could -- you know --"
S: "What? So we would just get so bad that we would hate the sight of
each other?"
L: "Shana, I could never -- [Softer.] Never mind. So how do you want
to do this?"
S: "It shouldn't be too difficult. You still have your apartment, so
you can just move right back in there."
L: "Yeah. And what about Patti?"
S: "She's your daughter. You can see her whenever you want."
L: "Well, what about those concert tickets I have --"
S: "Oh, just keep them! [Sits down, crying.] You know, things really
do always work out for the best. I mean, if we had been married, we'd
have to get a lot of lawyers together and we'd have to have all that
awful paperwork. It just makes everything so extraordinarly difficult
and devastating when you're trying to -- [she breaks down]"
Leo picks up his things and walks slowly to the door. Before he opens
it, he turns to Shana.
L: "Is this what you really want, Shana?"
Shana nods her head yes. Leo sets his stuff down and walks over to her.
L: "Then you tell me -- you tell me that you don't love me. [He leans
over and gets in her face.] You tell me that what you feel now -- what
we felt together has died. Shana, I want you to look at me. [Shana is
really bawling now.] I want you to look at me and say those words and
I will be packed and out of here as fast as I can."
S: "I thought it's what you wanted. I was just giving you a door out.
[Leo begins to stroke Shana's face.] I thought you wanted out!"
L: "Since when do you presume to know *my* thoughts, huh?"
They laugh. They kiss.
L: "Let's leave Buck and Stacey a note and go home..."
They stand up.
L: "...together."
Happy ending hanger...
