All the talk of a possible re-airing of Santa Barbara on the upcoming Soap
City channel has reminded me of the three Kellys that were on. While SB aired
from 1984-1993, I never saw much of it except a few episodes here and there,
mostly around 1987-1988 and around 1991 and 1993. From what I've seen in
magazines, newspapers, and Internet mentionings, Robin Wright Penn first played
Kelly Capwell. I don't remember her there at all, though I certainly remember
her from "The Princess Bride" and "Forrest Gump". I vaguely remember hearing
that there was another Kelly Capwell, played by a Carrington Garland in the
late 80's. I may have seen her in a couple of episodes then. Around 1995,
Carrington appeared in a Psychic Friends Network Hotline ad. In that advert,
Carrington looked almost identical to the one who played her sister Eden (Marcy
Walker ? ). Then around 1993, I remember seeing Kelly being played by Eileen
Davidson. In fact, she's the only actress that I clearly remember seeing
playing Kelly. What were the three actresses like? What did you like about
them? Did anyone have a favorite Kelly, and if so, which one, and why?

Actually, there were four Kelly Capwells. First, Robin Wright (who I got to
check out on tape...good portrayal) from 1984 when SB premiered, until 1988;
after she left in '88, Kimberly MacArthur, a Robin Wright lookalike, took
over...blink and you missed her. (I did, and from all accounts, am thankful!)
Then in '89, Carrington Garland began playing Kelly just in time to go on
location to Paris (nice!) and you're right, she and on-screen sister Marcy
Walker looked a lot alike. In '91, CG, despite her popularity, was let go and
replaced by Eileen Davidson, in an effort to boost the ratings. As for a
favorite, I only really saw CG and ED in their entirety as Kelly. That said, I
definitely choose Garland's Kelly as the Kelly Capwell I liked best. As I
said, though, having gotten to view RW on tape, she was great, too. Most
originators are. :) Eileen Davidson was, IMHO, a horribly miscast Kelly...far
too tough and a little too mature for the role. Davidson is a fine actress,
but Kelly "Kitten" Capwell she was not! <G> (For fun, there were also five CC
Capwells [one never even made it on-air], two Ted Capwells, two Sophia Capwells
[the first actress played her the whole time in drag as Dominic, Rosemary
Forsyth, says the IMDB], and three Mason Capwells!)

Actually, if memory serves me correctly, there were *four* Kellys. Robin Wright
(before the Penn) was the original and in my opinion the best; none of the
others ever got Kelly's essential vulnerability right. Right after was Kimberly
MacArthur. She lasted about six months; I'm guessing she was hired because she
resembled Robin but she never really clicked in the role. Then came Carrington
Garland, who I thought was a decent actress but, again, never really clicked.
She was on for several years, I think, but Kelly never recaptured my interest
as a character while Garland was playing her. Eileen Davidson's hiring as the
fourth Kelly was, in my opinion, a desperation ratings move--I love Eileen, but
she was totally wrong for the part (far, far too strong a screen presence for
an ingenue-type like Kelly) and I can only conclude the show hoped to capture
some of Eileen's following from Young and Restless and add them to its
dwindling viewership. Eileen acted the part with intelligence (especially given
some lame, lame plotting at the time) and her usual talent, but she was just
never Kelly to me. So my vote, not surprisingly, goes to the original, Robin
Wright, as the best Kelly.

Robin Wright was my favorite Kelly.

Does anyone remember when she miscarried, I cried with her. She is a very good
actress.

I have to agree. Robin Wright went unmatched as Kelly. Kimberly MacArthur
wasn't anything to write home about, Carrington Garland...well, I know other
people liked her, but I think I was still with this image of Robin Wright as
Kelly in my head that she would *never* be Kelly in my book. As for Eileen
Davidson...oy! That one goes down as the "Worst Recast with the Best
Intentions" category. I LOVED Eileen Davidson on Y&R (and actually tune in a
little now that she's back), but casting her as Kelly Capwell was a horrible
choice.

For fun, there were also... three Mason Capwells![Gwenky]

There might have been other actors trying to be Mason Capwell, but there was
only ONE Mason Capwell - Lane Davies. <g>

<Hanging head in shame> Forgive me, please. Lane Davies was the
quintessential Mason Capwell! :) (Throw bricks if you must, but I liked
Gordon Thomson as second best...but given a choice between the two...well, I
think you know my preference. <G>)

Terry Lester who went on to an incredible role, Royce
Kellar, on ATWT.

I remember when "Dominic" first came on, I immediately recognized Rosemary
Forsyth's voice, and no one would believe me when I said it was her!! . . . then,
or course, when we finally got to see Sophia, it wasn't Rosemary, everyone said I
was really nuts!! . . . but I was sure of my facts, as I had always been a Rosemary
Forsyth fan!!

Add my name to the Robin Wright vote . . . she was the original Kelly, and none of
the others ever came up to her standards!!

Robin Wright was the best actress to play the part of Kelly Capwell. She
made the role the most lovable. After the role went to other hands, the
character became much dumber. As much as I loved Carrington Garland, the
character was stupid when she played Kelly. Kimberly McArthur wasn't that
bad, but really not that good either. She resembled Robin Wright more than
any other Kelly. Carrington Garland looked the most like Marcy Walker. As
for Eileen Davidson, she's a fine actress, but she was the worst recast in
daytime history. She must be at least six year older than Carrington Garland
and has too much of a harsh look to play the part. Actually I always thought
Eileen should have been brought on to the show as Eden since Marcy had left
and they planned to pair Eileen with Cruz anyway. I'm sorry to say that
Marcy Walker wasn't irreplacable. She was a too much of an important
character to leave the show. JMO of course.
