Based on what we've seen in the last week, it seems clear that Matt was
at the scene (at least) and is repressing it. He might have been the
first, shaky-handed gunman, but not the shooter. He has contradicted
himself all over the place, telling Paulina that he broke up with Blair
(suggesting that he sent her on her way) and then telling others that it
was his fault she's dead because he told her to stay in town. He also
commented to Donna, "I keep seeing her body lying there on the docks." Is
he imagining it lying there, or remembering it lying there?
The previews say that Carl will hatch a plan to get revenge on Grant
after finding out he's out of jail. Now, does anybody really believe that
Jake knows that Grant's out before Carl knows? Don't think so. This
increases the possibility that Blair isn't really dead. Carl gave her the
new identification and the money so she would leave town, but he was
also concerned about Matt following. So, I think that part of the deal
might have been for Blair to play dead--to be shot with blanks and then
have Fax sedate her and put her in the hospital morgue for Matt to see.
But, Blair shooting Josie wasn't part of the deal, and we might think
that Carl decided to shoot her for real at that point. He certainly took
back the money and the identification, and why would he want to spare her
when she shot Josie?
You guessed it, Grant. If he knew at that point that Grant was about to
be a free man, and he had something to hold over Blair's head, he could
have gone ahead with the faked death and blackmailed her into doing the
same dirty work he wanted her to do in the first place--kill Grant.
Another clue: Someone noticed that the bum Grant ran into on the docks
was wearing a gold chain similar to the one that was left at the scene.
Also, Blair's murder and the stalker case are going to be confused, by
the police as well as the audience. Courtney's connection to Matt (Donna
is going to witness their embrace today) would link him to her
disappearance (death?) as well as Blair's murder, but Donna revealing
this could also implicate her. Also, Donna is going to turn to her
sleeping pills again, and this could give rise to more sleepwalking and,
possibly, positioning her as another victim of the stalker/rapist, but
one who might have a clouded memory of her attacker. Matt is implicated
again.
Seems as if Carl's plan to protect Matt at all costs could backfire.
